The early saloon ones were called "Chamade"

EFA. Now that's something I haven't seen in RHD flavour for yonks. I did spot this one down at the Port of Dinan last year:

Lovely. Also vaguely remember WHAT CAR magazine running an early midrange one on their long term fleet, though it got totalled in a motorway pile up

I thought Chamade was only used on the saloons.  There is (or was) a gold one knocking around Barrow, I haven't seen it for a while but that might just be because I'm not getting out like I used to.  I'll have to have a wander and see if I can find it...

My cousin had a sporty 19 Chamade, just like that one. It was absolutely mint and apparently quite rapid. Sadly though he took a bend in the road too fast, slid off the road sideways and put it through a dry stone wall writing it off. It was funny though as one side was still untouched and immaculate and you’d never know it was a write off. The other side was absolutely smashed! It was such a shame he did it, but he was a bit ‘boy racer’ at the time and obviously ran out of talent!

Phase 1 R19 saloons were indeed badged Chamades, but this was dropped for the phase 2.

We had two in the family - a 1990 GTS with a sprightly enough (for the time) 1.4 Energy engine. This got written off and was replaced with a 1990 GTD that wouldn't pull your socks off. Had lots of toys for the time though (central locking, electric windows, spoiler etc.)

A nice online chat with the supplying dealer this morning:

This sort of response warms my heart as it proves there’s still folk in the trade who get enthusiastic about this sort of thing. Renner has always been distributed by this family owned firm since before I was born and my parents bought a brand new R14 from them in 1977, so it’ll be nice to spin down once I’ve fixed the steering and let them have a look at the car (they may be interested in some of the paperwork too).

I guess there’s only a limited market for end of life clunkers that cost more to export than they’re worth and need work for MOT elsewhere. I’ve had some good stuff over the years from folk who just can’t be arsed with them any more - the economics of the local secondhand car market differ somewhat from that in mainland UK, for various reasons.

I remember you mentioning the Channel 103 gig back at the start of the year, when I was looking at getting the feasibility of getting the Fiesta that @red5 ultimately adopted over to the island. I’ll always put the kettle on for any shiter that wants to call round!

I'll take you up on that  :-)

Might even bring her over....

What a great story,  and a nice response from the garage who could just have easily fobbed you off or not bothered replying. Be good if you can get the car down there for a photo shoot, I bet they'd love to see it.

Ps: Nice bike, too!

Assuming you're available to collect me from the airport. Can it be in this please?

Possibly but not definitely! It’s potentially easier for the 19 to appear on my wife’s radar after the Panda goes but I need to start working on it sooner ideally... though Dennis has offered to host the Panda for a bit if it would be helpful!

Cheers - I bought the Trek new back in 2009, at the time it cost more than I’d ever spent on a motor vehicle. Took it to the Alps in summer 2010 and thoroughly trashed it on the trails, compared to the heavyweight downhill bikes that the local lads were using, it was like taking a fart to a shit fight.

I think the best thing about the reply from the garage is that it was sent after just 20 minutes and arrived before I’d finished my Shreddies! Does give me comfort that their ethos is to view everyone as a potential customer, as opposed to some penniless scrounger trying to get a life expired old shitter back into a usable state on a shoestring.

Never realised the earliest ones had the orange dash text like on the 21.

Can't remember the last time I saw a Mk I 19 without faded tail lights.

They do drive nicely, we had a TD one (on an L plate if memory serves) as a garage runaround for a while and it was the first car I recall driving where the rev limiter set the maximum speed...

If your stuck for finding parts, appreciate this is some distance away. But found a similar R19 breaking, on Gumtree in Coventry.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/car-replacement-parts/breaking-spares-renault-19-tse-blue-1.4-petrol-1990-bumper-wing-door/1375237035

I had two Renault 19's myself,  the first one a 1.9 Diesel & the second a 1.4 Energy. The first one was free like yours, it even was the same shade of metallic blue!! And cost me £12, plus my own labour and a tyre I pinched off my brother to get on the road!

The other, was saved from the crusher by my brother. And used by me, for a couple of years. Was a nice spec in in graphite grey metallic, with the yellow fog lamps and electric sunroof etc.. Wish I still had them, as they from the era when Renault still made decent stuff.

Unlike the Laguna 2 I had, which was utter garbage!! Anyway great to see one saved, the best I can do these days is R19 in 1/43 scale like below!!

Cheers for the heads up on that dead TSE in Cov. I’d defo be stripping that bare if I was on the same land mass. I might get in touch with them to see how cheaply they’d supply some replacements for missing or busted plastic bits.

My 19 is sitting patiently while I’m waiting for steering components to turn up, so I haven’t bothered it much but did get a few pics of the cosmetics for your enjoyment:

Random shots of interior front cabin showing general grubbiness/plastics discolouring. Passenger winder knob KRAKD off (driver window feels pretty stiff so probably the same issue on the opp side) which in a strange case of history repeating itself was something I also did to my parents R14 back in about 1982.  I think those bits in the footwell may be something to do with the battery.

Also KRAKD is the offside mirror, replacement found in glovebox though so that saves some investment.  Check out that stereo blank plate, behind which is an actual stereo!! No worky though.  Plus would you believe this thing apparently has an electric sunroof? There’s NFW that I’m attempting to open it mind, and I think it’s been sealed up anyway.

Those rear indicators might not be faded but the clusters both sides, as well as the front indicators, are not exactly showroom condition. Headlamps also well past their best (but intact)

Finally, some general shots. Corrosion seems to be surface rather than proper grot. I don’t reckon any of that looks too bad, cars tend to rust from the roof down (rather than from the floorpan up) over here.

Wife is still none the wiser. It’s our wedding anniversary next week, so I’ll probably wait for that to pass before breaking the good* news!

A Renault 19 was a car of 'firsts' for me.

It was the first car I drove after passing my test, drove in the dark with no headlights as I'd forgotten to switch them on, did over 100mph in, was pulled over by the police in, had sex in, crashed and the first car I drove away from the scene of an accident in.

It was an eventful evening that.

J247EAP. It was a GTS-X Chamade.

Here's a photo of me and my Mum with it (before I was able to drive it).

A girl at the bus depot I worked at had one exactly like your Jersey one. I hadn't driven one for years but had to shuffle hers round the car park to make room for buses.

I was surprised how heavy the pedals were, but seem to remember that my Dads one was a bit like that too.

Loving the stereo cover, ours was the same.

  • mk2_craig changed the title to HOLY CRAP! Free Renner 19 - Up for grabs I think

Alright everyone, so basically I’ve done diddly squat with the R19 and now the neighbours are complaining about it.

I got as far as obtaining some parts to repair the steering rack but the opportunity to actually fit them has not yet presented itself.

Which one of you wants it?

Exciting collection mission possibilities here. Just ask @alcyonecorporation or @Aston Martin who have previous when it comes to old Jersey registered heaps.

Have you considered inviting the neighbours over to discuss the matter over a nice, hot cup of Shut The Fuck Up?

Perhaps offer them a little Mind Your Own Cunting Business to go with it?
