True, but that all sounds rather more expensive than 90 quid for a Synergy 4 box.  And you'd need to find an early V70 to break for the engine - those are getting rare now.

Don’t quote me on this but I think* those VR6 engines were awkward in that the fit and forget timing chains (2 of them) could start rattling and fail at anything above 100k miles. Well, the tensioner/guides perhaps more than the chain itself. The chain is on the gearbox end and it’s an engine out job to fix.

The moral of the story must be that a VR6 should be high on your want list 😉

It’s worth baring in mind Transits only have about 85hp in some models that are 15 years newer than these. 

1.9 tdi has plenty of torque so is fairly reasonable. I’ve driven more than a few and they do the job ok. 2.5 tdi can’t be described as powerful to be honest, and drink a touch more. 
 

If I was having one, I’d get either 1.9 or 2.5 tdi. The 2.4d is good too, but older and usually more tired. I’ve painted a few of these, and late ones seem more rust prone to me, last I did was a 51 plate, and was rusting quite bad.

I'm thinking of changing from a Doblo car to a van for work. I'd consider a T4, but the only nice one there is for sale at present is 150 miles away, and we are locked down. It's quite expensive for a 2001 van but does look good. A 1.9 lwb.

Covid safe local viewing tomorrow morning at 1000.  I've honestly never felt so bloody nervous!  It's simultaneously a lot of money and not a lot of money all at the same time.  I think Serious Shitin' (no G) has made me so risk averse that the thought of spending proper money on something is totally foreign now!  My only concerns really are that it has an engine that's done some miles.  The Pinto rebuild cost me about £400 all in - but one of these rebuilt (or replaced) is a couple of grand.  Not something I'd have the stomach to face quickly.  I know these things are tough, but the moon is a long way away!

I hope it's a peach.  It certainly looks to have had a lot of money spent on it, and just hope that the bills don't start too quickly!

And anyway.  Faint heart never won fair maiden.

He's already agreed to take £500 off for the belt, that's without me asking and without me seeing it.  He says it was done 2017 so is due now.

Car puffs a bit on start (always has) and will clag a bit under high load.  Same as my Granvia.

Could be injectors a bit worn. As these are old style mechanical Bosch injectors they aren't incredibly expensive to put new nozzles in. Or you could just live with it. They go on forever like that, so as long as it passed the Mot ...

Re transits The 5 year old tranny we took to the Ukraine on a collection mish was slow thirsty and a very uncomfortable place to cover a 1000 miles a  day in,   it just managed 80mph flat out and as soon as a slight incline was encountered it lost speed very quickly,   2.2 diesel so I expected much more from it to be honest and it's just turned 95k miles  has had both driveshafts all brakes numerous times and is in limp mode at the moment with air mass and egr codes, apart from that the passenger window is taped up as it won't go up at all and it has more electrical faults than I would care to mention, let's not even mention the rust issues though.

Yup I would sure as hell give other vans a try before a tranny,    transporter 2.5tdi cambelt kit was a doddle on my syncro not sure where the worry about them comes from to be honest,  yes it had rust repairs but it was 18 years older than the above tranny,  wish I hadn't sold it now as they are  5 times the price I got for it and would rather have another van than this pickup .

Have you bought it yet you won't regret it hopefully.

The 2.2 engines never had the best reputation.  The earlier 2.0 is better on fuel and no more gutless.  My 2001 SWB would do 40 to the gallon on a run.

Final comment on this, but in the midlands at least, the van market is well up. I’ve been trading several cars and vans for over 20 years. I reckon any van I sold in the past would do £500 more at present, and I never struggled to sell a good van ever. This seems, here at least, to not be make specific either. A reasonable partner seems 1000-1500 atm. I remember the days of £50 mot fail Escort Vans!

/\  Agree with that - there are no cheap roadworthy vans around at the moment.  My Iveco was the cheapest running van with a decent MOT that I'd seen in a while, and even that was the most expensive van I've bought in several years.  I imagine it's because of the increased demand for parcel deliveries during the pandemic which has resulted in the supply / demand balance for secondhand vans being upset.

Fail on the quote side of things, but someone mentioned the Vw/Volvo engine, if it is 'ticking' and you pump the brake pedal it goes away - If this happens then change the Vacuum pump ASAP, as they can cause the camshaft to turn to broken metal, as the pump becomes solid, and the plunger is unable to compress the spring & diaphragm.

My 850 has the D5252T engine, and they can be made to go fairly quickly. Brilliant amount of torque, good on fuel and not 'that' agricultural, so I'd personally go for one with this engine or derivative in.

Ticking at this age and mileage more likely to be the hydraulic tappets being knackered.

Which sort of elongates it. The length wouldn't really matter to me anyway, but by the time lockdown is over it will probably have sold. It's up for €2500.

That's why you like the look of them. Joking aside, this is when dmfs and other modern stuff started entering the scene, and they can quickly run up big bills, especially the 2.5. Though my brother-in-law has had a 2004 1.9 for a couple of years without any disasters. So far.
