Toyota RAV4 GX "Jack" - Scrapped 20th August 2021 // Final Video To End 2021

Definitely @JMotor. That's my problem as in my head that paint could be better, I could make it better, I should make it better, but I've no time to. So it's a bit of a disappointment.

Today the weather was all over the place, but I've put the second coat of underseal on, along with the arches. So that's all done now, shit can be put back together.

IMG_20210731_155657821.thumb.jpg.aaada95104b6bf670e13003d898c5e60.jpg

I'm also between phones, so the photos are all to cock. I needed grommets, and couldn't seem to get blanking ones for the sills. Ordered what are, essentially, the feet you put on steel tubes chairs. And they're a perfect fit. Slapped a bit of underseal on it, snug fit!

IMG_20210731_123452260.thumb.jpg.8456e6a9c7a6cb1dd772aa215aa5ba63.jpg

Also threw some of the only tin of Hammerrite paint I've got in the shed. Gives a hammered finish apparently. You can't tell on the tow bar.

IMG_20210731_134420725.thumb.jpg.071dbed29b7994610876c3b9bf5d6c58.jpg

IMG_20210731_134424804.thumb.jpg.393ec3eb67c7ce8e5a83c8a039600fe5.jpg

Looks so much better even with that.

So I turned my attention to the fuel tank. Annoyingly, the vapour thing is just welded on with rust. They're just screws, and they're fragile to the point of being useless. So I'm going to let the next owner suffer that job.

IMG_20210731_143704027.thumb.jpg.e20ac3ac1ff2588a6c67d17724d0b74b.jpg

I took a hacksaw to the pipe, just past where the rubber joins. I think the new hose I have is long enough to cope.

Part two!

IMG_20210731_155551389.thumb.jpg.14bcd69ef72370eed9d4d0cb111b2afb.jpg

Cleaned it as best I could, slapped on the rest of the Vactan I've got. Tomorrow I'll give it a coat of black paint as the Vactan already gives it a primer.

IMG_20210731_155546351.thumb.jpg.67048d89de2a8c9a0d3f3625e1e071a6.jpg

IMG_20210731_155541706.thumb.jpg.2b9922d5f366c1363d1e98b7489456a6.jpg

The only issues with the fuel tank were the filler neck and vapour pipe. The rest, amazingly, was fine.

Also, I forgot to mention, I threw a can of the Dynax cavity wax in every cavity of the RAV4. This is what I looks like in situ.

IMG_20210731_155950377.thumb.jpg.1bccfad311c0bfd1d701f8ad54b8e367.jpg

Some came out, but not a lot. This is from the rear right corner of the car.

Tomorrow I have to make a fuel tank strap as one of them is a bit too rotten to put back. I've left a bolt in the rear subframe which I forgot about, I need to cut it off. I'll also try and remove what's left of the rear diff mount bushes, and then clean that bit up. As well as that, I've two seals to replace on the diff itself.

Plus, another trip to Halfrauds beckons to try and get grommets for the B pillars, as well as small jubilee clips to fit the fuel lines back on to the car.

Will give Toyota a call Monday to order two rear diff mount bolts, as well as a bolt missing from the ball joint I need to get. May try and see if I can get my money back on that fuel tank vapour pipe as well, but I doubt I will.

  • St.Jude changed the title to Toyota RAV4 GX "Jack" - Corner turned, home straight beckons...

Should've sent this last night but the battery died, so here we are.

Not too bad then! I'll set on the other side now.

I sanded the wing down again, and wanked shook the can for a long, long time. And this is all I could muster.

IMG_20210729_192725423.thumb.jpg.3aaf206e908e7bab7d66e916a173a76b.jpg

Genuinely can't understand it. Until I looked at the can.

The daft bitch behind the counter was too busy moaning about people being vaccinated SHE PUT 6M5 IN HER MACHINE. I got Greyish Green, not Mica Green.

IMG_20210729_192936794.thumb.jpg.2cc5745cee97c5ef0fae57882a716010.jpg

It's my own fault. Even though I had it wrote down on paper, told her Mica Green (and she even confirmed Mica Green), it's my own fault for trusting people too much to do their job.

I'll let the underseal dry off tonight, and go at it again tomorrow.

Fuck sake. It was never going to be perfect, but at least be a little bit off. Not a whole colour off. And the most annoying thing about it all is that the only place near me that will mix paint.... Is this place. I might use her face to make sure it's the right paint this time.

Tramadol? Your transportation costs must be cheap given you're flying everywhere! I hope never to get to that point, I hate having to take pain killers of any description.

And thanks about the welding 👍

Been on them for close to 8 years now...so don't affect me anymore.......unless I try and not take them, then I realise why you can't go cold turkey on these things!!!!

Lots of "little" jobs done. Namely stone chip the outer sills, top coat of black gloss, fitting of the removed rear spring, changing one or two fuel hose clamps, fitting the new vapour hose, ready for the fuel tank to go back in.

The fuel tank strap (well one of the two) was so flimsy I made one out of 4mm bar I got from B&Q yesterday. Didn't do too bad a job with just a hammer, a vice, and thighs thick as bollards.

IMG_20210801_160716218_HDR.thumb.jpg.691f810b6c61c50f499cbce2c86599bc.jpg

I turned my attention to the differential front mount. This, if you remember, was the thing where the bush just crumpled off the bolt, which is still in the subframe.

Now I've a pair of bushes, but looking at the bolt again that's on the mount, the bolt forms part of the bush.

IMG_20210801_172046185_HDR.thumb.jpg.c1ab9c3a9c43cedd640233c3b9f69892.jpg

I've looked online, and Toyota don't sell that bolt on its own. It gets sold as the mount complete. A quick search on eBay has brought up this:

Screenshot_20210801-194130-762.thumb.png.8c1f37c7cb29f4ce51341df7fad520bf.png

So I'm going to call them tomorrow, as they're only in Birmingham, and see if they'll either do next day delivery (and actually DO next day), and see if they'll take the fuel tank part I got from Toyota as a swap or something. Unlikely, but I gotta do what I gotta do.

But like a total fool, I struggled and struggled on my own to get the tank back on the car. And I succeeded.

IMG_20210801_183626415.thumb.jpg.daebd8ce37a85a13ba78553186ac83cc.jpg

Admiring my handy work - as I just did the one strap - I noticed this:

IMG_20210801_183636766_HDR.thumb.jpg.80f3ed0acecf1b7ea9f17d08cf0ea16d.jpg

So, I mean, it'll be tight to get the angle grinder to get that bolt off, but it could be tighter to get a new diff mount in! That'll probably need to come off. Joy.

Very genuinely had a moment where I thought "Shit, it's actually scrap" this morning, when I set about finding that differential mount.

I was googling the part number I thought it was, and nothing was coming up. The one I showed above? Nope. No one sold the part with the number I had.

I my darkest moments, I've always taken to the self flagellation of calling Toyota to see how they could screw me today. I gave him the part number, nothing came up. He asked what it was for, I told him, and he told me sweetest 10 digit code I've ever heard: 52380-42071. For the next sad bastard who has to deal with a problem like this on their Mk1 RAV4. The differential mount you need is 52380-42071

Toyota wouldn't be Toyota if they didn't give me a kick down to earth after the ball tickling: £170 exc. VAT for that particular part. Although, oddly, I could get it by 3pm today if I ordered before 12. Which is odd, given I've had to wait 2 days for a fucking bolt to be made available to me.

Anyway, with that code I re-did the search and the mount I shared above does fit. Called them trying to make sure I could get next day delivery, I couldn't which was shit but I could collect it. So once I clock off at 5pm I'll be doing a mad dash to Balsall Heath before 6pm at rush hour. Gives me the opportunity to try and off load that fuel pipe though!

So remember kids - differential mount part number is 52380-42071!!!!

So as I went out, I realised the wife had stuck her car next to the RAV4. No bother, plenty of space - if I were a dwarf. And you know well if something slipped I'd never hear the end of it!

IMG_20210802_192047492_HDR.thumb.jpg.36f26108ffbca55707885549578b16bf.jpg

Dropped the front bolt of the strap input on yesterday, pushed it forward just enough to put the rear differential mount on it. Easy enough fit - I hope I put it on right now...

IMG_20210802_192314954_HDR.thumb.jpg.9592a99f7d7066f6c20200ce741e9cf0.jpg

Put the strap I made on, it's just that bit thicker than the old one. Well, twice as thick tbh, it's a snug fit. The tank isn't moving - which I imagine is what we want isn't it?

IMG_20210802_200351759_HDR.thumb.jpg.e35f19b44902191532473555f4c2d4ef.jpg

IMG_20210802_200402315_HDR.thumb.jpg.b2123bb94fb3a43ac316c7f359e1bb74.jpg

I've got to do something with the heat shield on the left. I've also got to get some fuel hose clips to finish connecting the fuel lines to the tank so I'll probably get some JB Weld or something and just mush it together. The Big Boy filler would've been ideal but I used that.

I should really change the seals on the rear diff, so that'll be tomorrow's job. At which point that can go back on the car. Then the propshaft and exhaust. The exhaust needs a little bit of welding after I cut off the hanger taking it off.

I need to wire the rear door back to the car, and drill holes in the freshly welded arches to take the plastic trim.

After which, the rear diff, gearbox, and engine all need their oils. Fuel in the tank, it's MOT ready...

Could've/should've done more today, but I had planned the whole evening to be a time of removing two seals from the rear differential to change them.

However, I can only find one. And it's not the input shaft seal, it's the pinion seal. I've no idea where the other one has gone. So I decided feck it, neither are leaking but probably will after I put it back but I can just keep it up with oil if it does.

Anyway, I took off the rear diff out of the car, and the rear mount came off. Without too much effort either.

I couldn't be arsed, so I took the gun to it and changed it.

It's ready to go on tomorrow!

P.S: you can change the orientation by moving your head.

P.P.S: my drill turned up. After a call to head orafice, they said it'd be with me on Thursday. An hour later the Screwfucked branch said it was ready to collect.

Well I had another minor panic attack today, when I went to look for the rubber elbow joint for the filler neck that I bought and I couldn't find it. But I did, eventually, after a half hour of searching.

At which point I then thought I best get the locking cap thing on. And I had another panic as I couldn't find the nut for the latch. Genuinely thought I put it on the latch when I took it off, obviously I didn't. Found it on the dashboard though, and the fuel cap was on!

IMG_20210804_190231809.thumb.jpg.1f97a7b4107408a915aca38d5b90949e.jpg

Along with the replacement fuel neck, rubber elbow, meaning the whole tank is now plumbed in and wired up.

IMG_20210804_190246882.thumb.jpg.46bcb72646fce954f0a14db71b6ec1b8.jpg

At this point I realise I had forgotten to weld two tabs under the fuel cap to hold the plastic guard. But the two bolts (should be 3, one snapped off taking it off) seem to hold on to it fairly well. So I may just mastic it up and left that hold it. It's not going anywhere.

IMG_20210804_193658932.thumb.jpg.a232af2ddee537deb5f438d279d7bc5b.jpg

Annoyingly I found the oil seal for the diff! Too late really, as with all the sodding about with jubilee clips and fuel clamps the heavens opened and I ran out of daylight really.

So tomorrow the differential will be going on, along with the propshaft.

  • St.Jude changed the title to Toyota RAV4 GX "Jack" - Fuel me up buttercup.

So I didn't want to do an update yesterday as I was soaked through, cold, tired, hungry, and a bit sore on the old noggin. See above.

That particular injury was caused by trying to get under the car, with the propshaft, balanced on the axle stand. The propshaft is heavy, and nudged the axle stand which thwacked me above the eye. I didn't know I had cut myself until I wiped my brow from the frigging rain.

I did some welding, which - oddly - made a change.

IMG_20210805_175333754_HDR.thumb.jpg.9ea0c73c307277f01985a80bf1cf8345.jpg

Just welded the bit of the pipe that I Cut off months ago. I had such a faff with this exhaust in some respects as I thought "shit, I've lost the bolts for it". I hadn't, but I found them after I made a mad dash to B&Q. I'll take a photo later, but it's such a horrible design of exhaust where access to the top bolt is hidden by the frigging propshaft.

You'd be right to think though that "he's talking about fitting exhausts, and a propshaft? shirley you don't mean..."

And I do mean this: The MOT is booked for TOMORROW (Saturday 6th 7th August) at 9am.

Jobs left to do for the MVMT - Minimum Viable MOT Test:

  • Plug O2 sensor from exhaust in to car
  • Triple check tightness of propshaft and rear drive shaft bolts
  • Oil in the rear diff
  • Oil in the gearbox
  • Oil in the engine
  • START THE ENGINE!!!!!!!!
  • Spark plugs
  • Air filter
  • Plug in driver's side rear brake light
  • Rear bumpers
  • Cable ties on tow hitch electrics
  • Cable ties on fuel line

I've a dizzy cap to put on there, along with a rotor arm, I want to make sure the engine starts and there's no issue with the fuel as I still don't know if that kink in the fuel line is going to be an issue or not. That is really the only thing that could kybosh the whole getting this to an MOT really.

So yeah, roll on 5pm to get this rocking.

I'll have that. It's better than being told I look like David Bellamy - which happened on Wednesday.

So, the good news...

It started. It hunted a bit as it was cold, but it's all grand.

There was a small leak on the fuel line where the pump exits the tank. Tightened that up, it's bone dry.

The bit of the fuel line I worried about is bone dry and isn't as kinked no more.

However - the return line I put in is a little short. I think.

IMG_20210806_190300958.thumb.jpg.2af4b8abebe290f86fa0239ab80a34a4.jpg

I think the rubber needs to go past that bit of a bump on the hard line. Thankfully I still have some of this hose left!

I'd agree with that about the pipe. Then move the clamp the that indentation.

Nope. Its bollocksed.

There's a pin hole in the pipe just past that bump. The hose won't go over it either.

Fucked it.

Worked right to the dark, seat belts on. Wired up what I needed to. Gearbox topped up. Skipped the spark plugs. Then I thought - I haven't done the nut for the ball joint.

No bother I think, I've got the nut.

I have a nut. But it's not for that. Because what I needed was a fucking bolt. A £2 bolt. And I don't have it.

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck off.

So I'll call Toyota tomorrow morning to find out what Tuesday they'll have the bolt - because they don't seem to ever have any bolts they're always ordered in - so I have to postpone the MOT for a week as I've no days off to take now.

Fuck sake.

Pinch bolt for the ball joint?

If so... (my apologies if it's not)

Any tractor dealers near you? As it'll be a 10.9 job you'll need. Sometimes they carry hardware like that and most are open on a Saturday too. Won't be in the same fine pitch thread, but so long it fits!

I've no photo, but it's for the lower part of it. It's what connects the lower wishbone to the ball joint. I mullered the old one to get it off. Annoyingly, when I was stuck for a bolt before the Corolla was great as it used some of the same bits. But that's with a mate now so that's a no go.

No idea about the tractor dealers, but I'd rather be the proper thing especially given where it is.

Called Toyota this morning, and like a charm they can't get it until Tuesday morning. So it'll be another week now which is annoying. But at least I can get the plastic trim back on it 😂

I was thinking more Michael Sheen in the brilliant Staged.

See that I can get on board with - a man with impeccable taste in music.

And it made me smile, which I needed today. As you'll see why.

...

I thought I'm a bolt away from MOT-dom, I moved the cars around. Moved the RAV4 back so I could move the ZR forward as I have to break it up now. I reversed it back, and I thought the brakes were a bit shit. In the time it's been off the road I've been driving the wife's Merc and my own 107, and I remember it being a bit spongy anyway but this was something else.

IMG_20210807_181743308_HDR.thumb.jpg.d3156e0c9c75c36e2e169f1208323146.jpg

As I moved the ZR, I went back to the RAV4 and started it up. I saw the (P) light as the handbrake was on, but there was also the (!) On as well. I drove it up, pedal goes right to the floor.

I've looked at the master cylinder, it was low. I topped it up, still nothing. I went under every wheel, I can't see any leaks. I never touched the brakes at any point, so I've no idea where the fluid went and where it's going now - or where the air is coming in.

But I am actually done now. I'm not fucking about with brakes, especially as it's not obvious like a rubber hose and what not.

So it's going up on the for sale bit, it's there for a week, and if no one bites for it, it's going to Car Take Back.

Thems is literally the brakes. I had to get rid of it anyway with the incoming addition, but I've spent enough free time on it to right the things which were wrong with it to spend more spare time fixing something that wasn't broken before.
