The ride height definitely looks good, is it as high as it can be or lowered already? Curious about the ride quality, too.

Back - hunners of adjustment high/low.

Front- I suspect they are near wind out height limit. It will go higher but I wound them back in a bit as I was paranoid about them popping out over a bump or something. Photos are how it's sitting currently.

I think I'm going to take off one of the front coils next week just to have a look. Will tape up the thread as it's sitting just now then wind out as far as they go and send you a picture. 👍

  • 2 weeks later...

Teeny tiny update.

Lockdown means I've not gone too far but I've done a couple of 60 mile round trips to work and back in the LS400.

Comfort? Not as good as original but that's always going to be the case with non-adjustable dampers. If you want marshmallow/ cloud/ pillow smooth you are definitely better off sticking to original, but the ride is perfectly acceptable to my arse.

Reliability? The nearside rear squeeks under sharp right turns/ roundabouts. Their suggestion is to pack the top mount with grease. I'll see if this makes a difference.

The scottish salty roads have quickly started to show some BROWN on the threads. I can imagine come summer they'd need a good bit of persuasion to adjust.

@Schaefft - you can buy them for £132 quid on their website using the code MERRY. 😂

I'd recommend giving them a good spray of XCP rust blocker which should keep the corrosion at bay.

Plenty of us use it on our motorbikes and it really is amazing stuff.

I'd recommend LM2 grease on those threads ASAP, power washing off and reapplying fresh every 6 months. It's tough enough not to get washed off by road spray but comes right off if you power wash it.

I did this on the KWs I had on my car and there was not a speck of rust for the 9 years I had them on the car. They were the Variant 1 non-stainless as well.

Took the opportunity to give the LS a quick clean and jack up the front another centimetre.

20201216_173307.thumb.jpg.087c5fd6489e33f3665ff7032486d511.jpg20201216_173253.thumb.jpg.e67e6ae40e445e4f700076468ff91c32.jpg

Far from perfect but I'm content.

Being relegated to outside on Friday as I have a new fleet arrival incoming, so this will probably be the last pictures of the LS clean until spring.

In other news the real MVP has started spanish lessons that will mean keeping out of the way a couple of nights a week, so I've purchased myself a super cheap high quality chinese mig welder to play with. If I get any good with metal offcuts I might attempt tickling the LS inner arches(yup, found some!).

Get in! We'll drag Glasgow back into the 70's one old car at a time.......

My toledo's a 4 door too so if you ever want any pics or measurements just shout. I'm not sure on the advice front though still being a novice in all things Triumph. For that I'd refer you to my Triumph Spirit Guru @captain_70s

Couldn't wait any longer.

Checked oil, threw a battery in her. Pulled ignition coil cable, turned her over few times. Ignition cable reseated. Dab of accelerator and choke, cranked and she purred into life. Yup thats me giggling at the end like I'm 12.

I need it to be 9am tomorrow already so I can go play.

Wee update.

Scrubbed and put her back in the garage to let battle commence.

20201219_122549.thumb.jpg.e2b3b0582b4dbb16ed49c1cbce5fd3ba.jpg

Plans:

Wheels:
I'm going to spray the steelies gloss black. Might buy some chrome rings or a centre cap of sorts, but I'll see.

I started priming...(in two minds about the colour as I think it looks decent in silver..hmmm):

20201219_175426.thumb.jpg.5d995599d816afba88826655e6458634.jpg

Interior:

20201219_122600.thumb.jpg.cefb1bb9a72b3823932ebb330716f906.jpg
Seats are in very good nick. Fronts are stashed inside the mx5 just now.

The tolly came with brand new centre and gearbox carpet sections (the awkward shapes). I'm not paying £££ for the footwells/sides/ boot so I'll  attempt to make these myself. Roll of auto carpet, vinyl edge tape, sound deadening ordered for £45. If I have enough material left I'll make some floor mats too. I have a sewing machine to sew the edge tape but may farm oot to the MIL as she is braw at making curtains, cushion covers etc.

Also.
Fit 2x rear window winders (ordered)
Fit 2x front ashtrays (ordered)
Refurb door caps (one day)
Fit Carpet sill trims (ordered)
Fit lower dash (in boot)
Fix horn
Seat belts x4
Wooden gearknob

Exterior:
Long term I would like to paint her in original white , but that costs money. I like the satin colour so will give it a blow over in the same colour, including on the roof and bonnet to smarten things up.  It doesn't need to be perfect. And it won't be because I'm shite at painting and don't have the patience for it. Started rubbing down (rear panel will not be touched as I like the sticker bomb 😁

20201219_175500.thumb.jpg.6169d2e70226c82e3042b9d9d3206843.jpg
I would like a Dolly Sprint chin spoiler but they are expensive. I've purchased a mk1 golf gti duckbill chin spoiler so will give that a go. I've seen a few dollys with them and I like the look.

Also:
Windscreen chrome (ordered)
Upper door chrome trims (ordered)
Rear quarter upper trims (seem expensive...I'll investigate options)
Window rubbers
Refit lights, grills

Engine:

20201219_145633.thumb.jpg.334e6299971c19934162707a43cb3f66.jpg
She was serviced in March, but will replace all fluids and plugs as a matter of course. Needs a battery and the bonnet needs a rubber mount so have ordered one. Might tone down the colour of the brace. That's it.

Rust:
She is fooking solid. I will tidy up underseal in places and spray some dynax uc into cavities but otherwise thats it for now.

A LOT of time has been spent on her underside - new bushes, shocks, springs.

This is not going to happen quickly. But if I can get most jobs done for the end of salt-season I'll be happy. Just need Santa to buy me some AF tools now.

Gerry, I am so sad to have let her go but am exceptionally jappy that you are doingvthe thongs that I could not. I look forward to seeing this potentially cracking car develop over the next few weeks, couple of months. Am stupidly pleased that you are keeping the bootlid the same way that I had it. I clrarly passed the car to the right person and am glad about that.

Update. Been chipping away at this during the week after work/today:

Did the wheels:

20201220_110007.thumb.jpg.ebb1b721c9e6b52bde173a3f49be2393.jpg

Started stripping:

20201221_211706.thumb.jpg.54749562a214979fa400118a40c67410.jpg

20201222_203813.thumb.jpg.e4e4c59a205c1d900ad9d15607c49ebc.jpg

Started masking/priming:

20201226_130225.thumb.jpg.0c6fb141505259b9f976e5a5caf4dcd5.jpg

20201226_130318.thumb.jpg.2678cef90fab1fc0dff231271230b794.jpg

Started painting:

20201226_164755.thumb.jpg.756db0a880f6eb0a15b3d27192693edb.jpg

20201226_164829.thumb.jpg.12b93d17aad080fe251e612be4bc1b32.jpg

Ran out of upol cans so need to order more to do the doors and any top-ups. Now stevie wonder could see the paint defects from 20 feet away but for 60 quid and only my time spent I'm not complaining. Will invest someone elses considerable time and my money at a later date.

Whilst waiting for the extra cans to turn up I'll get started on mocking up templates for making up the carpet/ make a boot floor from plywood.
