It's failed it's MOT, with a large to do list: New wipers in the boot so that's one done. I'm not sure I believe the issue with the discs as I really do think it's surface rust as it's done no miles in a couple of years. The rears especially don't even have a lip on them.I'll see if they clean up/ check they are within spec. Brake pipes will need replaced for sure as will the flexi hoses. Rear springs will be done in pairs as will the drop links, probably the shocks as well since they'll be out anyway. I've not made brake pipes before, so another skill I'll need to learn. No doubt about it, it needs work. A lot of work. Cosmetics - Bonnet and roof have microblisters, the scoop, mirror and spoiler paint is totally knackered. As for the front wings: I've went into this fully aware that these things rot for fun, but I took a gamble. Once I get it on stands and pull those sill covers /inner arch panels and rear interior trim out, I'll be in a better position to confirm if it's worth saving before I spend any money* on parts. (*I already bought 2x red front wings from a scrapped Celica, but that doesn't count ok?) Worst case is I'll sell it on for spares, but I'm really hoping I can save it as I quite like these. The plan is to use it as a station car (my wife has already called dibs). It's ULEZ compliant too which will come in handy. I'll try and keep this updated with any progress. I'm not sure whether to be insanely jealous or grateful for not having this. Great buy, I absolutely love them. Take a long look at the rear subframe, especially where it hooks in around the fuel tank and where the control arms meet the hubs. They have a habit of passing MOTs even though they can be very sketchy indeed. I still sort of hanker after one to fully derust and 'sort out'. I reckon any surviving good ones will be worth something. If you get fed up with it, offer it to some MR2 people as they'll chew your arm off for a good 2ZZ engine. Well I started picking this morning and within five minutes I had found a substantial amount of cornflakes. This is a 50cm long piece of fresh air in the driver's sill. The side skirts are all gummed up with thick mud and leaves, so I'd imagine these sills had been left silted up full of water. Drivers side rear of sill, subframe is just behind here: Passenger side slightly less crusty: The rear end here in this last pic makes me nervous....I think that might be a tank out job to fix given the proximity of the fuel lines/filler neck. I wonder how this hasn't appeared in previous MOTs (or last weeks failure), when it's not hidden under a cover (unlike the sills). I tapped it with the end of my socket wrench without much pressure and it made that hole. The subframes are flakey, but I've not found holes, neither on the floor/legs. But I think it's been living under a tree forever as it's just full of mud. Here for example is underneath the front wing: I'll need to think about what I'm going to do. I'll keep digging to see if I can find anymore rot. I expected a bit of rot in those sills, but to replace the whole thing (and repair the inners) , that's a hoorah work and I'm not entirely sure I want to do it. I just picked it up from there as the previous owner had sent it to JH autos. I tend to use Cairnlea in Ibrox or most recently I've used Glenmuir in Barrhead, who appear to be a decent bunch. 👍 GregZX
dome
2zz engines do fetch decent money if you decide not to repair it. Shame as the Celica is a good looking car and probably drives well but they rot like, well like this one😞
StescoG66
What a fantastic thread. Cast iron cojones dear chap. Noted your recommendation of classic-friendly MoT stations, although it’s a bit of a hike being on the north side of the shitty. GMcD
Oh and a special shout out to tyre fitters who over torque locking wheel nuts. The OSF locking wheel nut is on so tight the locking removal key exploded. I got two off by hammering a 17mm socket over them, but that one is stuck solid. Bastards!! Removal tool is on order but I have my doubts it'll work as it looks to be on mega tight. Thankfully the sills are mostly flat and hidden under the covers. The plan on mine was just to chop away at it and replace with flat bits of 1.2mm for the inner, and the same bent to rough shape for the outer, plug welding them together along the lower seam. Your inner arches look better than mine did, but TADTS. GMcD

GMcD
Replacement wings arrived. The numpties didn't put any packaging between both wings, so inevitably the wings rubbed together putting some decent down to the metal scores on an otherwise very tidy passenger wing. StescoG66
P^^^useless, hard of thinking pricks! When my Sprint was welded, inner sill sections were NLA but was able to get a generic one from a body panel place in Rutherglen. Bought one deeper than required and trimmed it once it was welded up. Can’t remember the name of the place, but I do recall it was behind the big Tesco across from Arnold Shark. Not sure if it is still there though, it may have moved....... Edit. It may have been CV Panels AnnoyingPentium and GMcD
leakingstrut
That’s a bugger, looks pretty fixable at least. Hope you get it back on the road, those Celiacs are nice. After I broke the boot handle on the Freelander it was cheaper to buy a whole secondhand boot than a new handle. Thankfully I didn’t need the actual boot because it arrived with all four corners bent from transport. Idiots. GMcD
GMcD
Well I think I'm going to sack this off and cut my losses once the V5 shows up. I think the amount I need to do is slightly overwhelming me on this one. Over ambitious. Welding: outer sills - full lengths, inners - both need repairs. Rear of sills - both need repaired. To do all this safely I would need to drop the tank as behind the filler neck (which is also pin-holed and therefore fucked) needs cut out and replaced. Filler neck replacement is £80 quid new. Amazingly I haven't found any other holes, the subframes are flakey but otherwise sound. Floors, legs, all flakey but fine and clean up well with a wire brush. However, ever single 12mm or less bolt seems to have the consistency of chocolate as does every small bracket (handbrake, fuel filler, pipes). I would have to remake these or find alternatives. I can't even get the hose clamps off the hose that connects the tank to the filler neck, I'd need to cut the hose (which is a different diameter at each length and therefore costs money) to get the tank out. Am I heck making sparks near it to do it. Parts roughly: Filler neck -£80 Filler Hose - tbc Brake Hoses - £40 Rear Drop links(x2) - £20 Full set of discs - £80 Caliper Rebuild kit - Rear - £45 Full set of Pads - £30 Rear backing plates - £130. Rear Shocks x2 -£60 Rear Springs x2 - £25 Tyres will be needed eventually as well as they are cracked within the treads on 3x of them. Totting up my lists I think I would be in it for about £500 in parts alone before I even started repairing the sills or the brake pipes. I've stuck the wheels on it again and chucked it back on the drive to await it's likely fate. Pity but I guess it's vital organs can live on in an Mister Two. dome, Split_Pin, sdkrc and 7 others 8
