Daihatsu Fourtrak - More welding than the Bismarck

Hi all, I’m going to try to keep this updated as a diary of work done on my old Fourtrak. 
I bought this a few years ago but have only recently got going on it properly, with several other projects on the go, times been scarce.

Ill start with the main job, the rear crossmember. When I bought the truck this tube had snapped on the drivers side. This ruptured the brake pipes, and ruined all the already tired suspension bushes.

So, out with the crossmember...

The original is round tube, the new 3mm wall box section, it actually holds the anti tramp bars. 

Yes the Fourtrak has a 5 linked rear suspension, and an LSD. Because race car!

I didn’t take many pics at this time, so I’m trying to improve this and maybe a thread will motivate me to document it.

To the front of the spring mount you’ll see a hole, to access the crossmember.

This was next up for repair. Cut out, welded and ground back, then Zinc primed. Inside all the repairs Is some zinc spray too.

About now was when I started to scrape all the barnacles, manure, rust and loose sealer from the underside. As the underside cleaned up, and more and more holes were sorted and primed, progress was being made.

Ill trawl my old pics so you can see what this looked like originally, there was a farmyard worth of shite on this, mud sever inches deep at this point.

Bits removed are this point- rear axle, rear suspension arms and tramp bars, under guards, prop, fuel tank and filler neck Shiz, rear bumpers, literally the worlds most hardcore tow bar, rear bumpers, Entire interior.

Theres a theme developing. If it’s made of metal, it needs welding.

Mines not been tested in a few years, but there’s many still going on farms. 

It’d be interesting to find out for sure, but I think they’d be more survivors on sorn but used off-road or registered limited use, than there is taxed - tested.

Most the farm ones will never see another MoT, this one should though!

My uncle bought one on a v plate brand new. I hated it, he loved it.

Years later a mate had one and loved it, he said it would pull anything. It literally snapped in half one day though. He sold it for very good money.

Owners absolutely love them.

Okay, so as I’m ahead of progress to where this thread is, I can update further.

Fuel tank - this has weeping seems, and needs a look at. Any shiters experienced with a tank sealer? 
 

The next work done was the rear trailing arms, these had bushes replaced with poly, and the spring seats were repaired, before a coat of rust oleum combi colour. 
 

All the rust was ground away with various wire wheel grinder wheels, and rust converted with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80. This stuff is immense.

With the rear chassis welded, and the arms done, the rear axle could go back in to make it roll. 
 

This was fitted but not fully done up. 
The plan is to remove it again to treat the whole underside with an underseal or similar. 
 

Before this there’s other rust to sort, you can see some of the treats in store in the arches from these pics already. 

Close up pics to come, when I can bare to look at them myself! 
 

So, for the first time in a while, the beast was on four wheels, and was movable again.

Yep, I used the kit available that cleans, treats and seals the tank.

It was really straightforward and easy enough to do methodically.

Can't remember the name but it will come up in a search. They seem to be aimed at motorbikes more than cars.

'Kinell.  Good job it's got a separate chassis or it would have folded in half by now...

I've had three Fourtraks, two LWB petrols and a SWB diesel, but they were all Mk1s with beam axles and cart springs.  I did drive a TDS Independent once and was quite impressed.  Haven't seen an MOT'd one for sale for a while though.

Cheers for the fuel tank experiences.

Progress is slow this week, as I’ve got two of my fleet mot tested and cleaned up ready for sale.

I also bought another car. Taking me to a nice even ten. Oops. 
 

Turned the beast around though, next jobs are to replace the rear body mount, and rebuild the floor and inner arch. When this is done I reckon I’ll be about a quarter of the way through welding it up!

I think they made them too 2002, which makes mine fairly late.

Im pretty sure Daihatsu is a subsidiary of Toyota, same way as is Lexus.

Ive been told that the Fourtrak chassis is almost a land cruiser 70 or 80. I wonder how similar the mechanicals are, for example the Land Cruiser has a 4.2 straight six, this a 2.8 straight  four.

Realistically last update for the year, thought after 5 months it’s time, and threads that go cold with this sort of job often seem like they got abandoned.

Truth being, I work In education, and since last update, work got a bit mental..

More and more lumps of metal have come out, sound metal found eventually though. So I thought.

 Chopping all this out was great. So great the inner sill couldn’t wait so fell off all by itself. Bugger.

Then a couple of months of work, Covid, catching Covid, work etc got in the way of progress. So a tidy up was in order.

This was a great idea, as the sharp bit punched its way through the rear body mount, which promptly collapsed.

So by this point I have a car with half the floor out, the sills falling off by themselves, and the body mounts collapsing.. essentially, I think the gearstick was holding the body on.

There always comes a point where a decision has to be made....

 

 

After a short, soft think, clearly I’m gonna weld it up. 
Several smaller jobs are underway at the minute, hoping to get the welder out in the Christmas holidays if I get some free time. 


Will 2021 be the year it rides again?

Great thread, please keep up the good work...!  Quite a few of these on farm patrol duties round these parts, always well loved vehicles.  I've read that the engine is a licence-built version of the Toyota lump that's in my old Hiace... Not quick, but pull your house down if you wanted!  

Great to see this level of welding/fabrication, 99.678/10... would read again!

I had an R plate one a few years back, 2.8 TDX 7 seater, was a lovely dependable thing, not fast but solid and charming. It had been touched with a sparkly stick on the sills both sides at some point but was really tidy. Did two years worth of green laning in it and then sold it on. Miss it nowadays as it was cheap fun.

      A Range Rover P38, which is turning out to be really rather good.
       
      And to mix things up even more I'm off on a collection caper today. Had first refusal on it and was expecting it to come around in a year, but things soon changed and no way was I going to pass up on it. It may well render the second Xantia redundant as I've got a really good feeling about this motor.
       
      In the meantime here are some snaps of the Range Rover. As usual it was a car I said I would probably never buy due to their reliability*. I have said the same of Jag XJR, XJS, XK8 and I have had all of those now. Basically the moment I declare buying a particular car is impractical or improbable, I end up buying one.
       
      Things to note on the P38. It's a nice colour with tidy body. The EAS has been removed. It runs and drives lovely and it doesn't have enough electrical problems to hinder progress. The main one is the driver's side window not working, but that should be fixable. I've tried changing the outstation, that didn't fix it. Might be wiring under the seat. Other than that I bought it and took it for an MOT the very next day, and it passed. Since then it had what seemed like a battery drain, but since unplugging the RF thingy for the remote locking and putting on a proper lead-acid battery, which the car can actually charge, unlike the modern lead-calcium batteries, it has been perfect. I will treat it to a full service soon.

      Picked car from a bodywork guy in foreign lands (Yorkshire).
       
      First thoughts are that I think it has been sitting for a while but started straight up. Apart from service bits and potentially a cambelt everything seems to be good with it. Comes pre dented.
       
      Current is differently abled tax so that will need to be changed.
       
      Windscreen has small crack in passenger side.
       
      Runs really cold, this is after 30 miles of motorway

       
      Mind you it honks. Properly honks. Not as much as the focus I got from Shadow but not far off.

      Morning chaps, long time no see.
      I've not had much in the way of shite to share on this forum of late but I have now gone some way to redeeming myself with this glorious old heap, an eBay purchase which I won last night.  Fortunately the seller seems decent and isn't in any rush for it to leave so there won't be much happening for a  few weeks until collection can be arranged, leaves me plenty of time to clear the decks in preparation.
      The essential stats are that it's a 1977 Princess 1.8, I think it's a base model and a Series 1 given it's not got a 1.7/2.0 O-series engine which I would have preferred.  Not sure how rubbish the B-Series is in this thing but I guess we'll see.  It's got an MOT and has been woken from many years of slumber fairly recently, I think it was on eBay last year prior to the current owner obtaining it but I don't have any details.  I think it's a base model and lacks power steering or indeed any equipment to speak of.  It's apparently very solid and has been undersealed, there's some rot above the bootlid and in the doors and the bonnet looks awful but is mostly surface corrosion I think.  It'll be getting a proper going over once I get my hands on it, a full service and brake refurb is likely the first port of call, plus finding someone local who can pump up the hydragas.
      My sole experience of these is driving Philibusmo's utterly ruined example (OKK if anyone remembers the ex-Vulgalour one) a few years back and I was so impressed at how well it drove considering the state it was in, I've wanted one for years so this is a slightly weird dream come true.
      Feel free to chip in with anecdotes, advice and mockery.  More details will probably surface in a few weeks once it lands.  It has MOT but it's on ancient tyres and has electrical issues (I know, who'd have thought?) meaning the lights and cooling fan don't work.  Given that it's in Kent and I'm in Devon, I am probably going to take the easy way out and Shiply it home.  Plenty of time yet to make some arrangements for that.

      Well I've been meaning to sign up here in forever, but kept forgetting. Thanks to someone over on another forum I frequent poking me about it recently the subject was forced back into my very brief attention span for long enough to get me to act on the instruction.

      I figure that my little varied fleet might bring you lot some amusement...

      So...we've got:

      1993 Lada Riva 1.5E Estate (now fuel injected, as I reckon the later cars should have been from the factory...).
      1989 Saab 900i Automatic.
      1987 Skoda 120LX 21st Anniversary Special Edition.
      1985 Sinclair C5.
      2009 Peugeot 107 Verve.

      Now getting the photos together has taken me far longer than I'd expected...so you're gonna get a couple of photos of each car for now, and I'll come back with some more information tomorrow when I've got a bit more time...

      Firstly...The Lada. Before anyone asks - in response to the single question I get asked about this car: No, it is not for sale. Took me 13 years and my father's inheritance to find the thing.


      Yes, it's got the usual rusty wings...Hoping that will be resolved in the next couple of months.

       






      Next, a proper old Saab. One of the very last 8 valve cars apparently, and all the better for it. I've driven two 16v autos and they were horrible - the auto box works sooooo much better with the torque curve of the 8 valve engine. Just wish it had an overdrive for motorway cruising...









      Next up a *real* Skoda...back when they put the engine where it belongs, right out the back. In the best possible colour of course...eye-searingly bright orange.







      Seat covers have been added since that photo was taken as it suffers from the usual rotting seat cloth problem that affects virtually all Estelles.

      Then we have possibly the world's scruffiest Sinclair C5...



      Realised when looking for this that I really need to get some more photos of the thing...I use it often enough after all! We have a dog who's half husky, so this is a really good way of getting him some exercise.

      Finally - again, I really need to take more photos of - we have the little Pug 107.



      Included for the sake of variety even if it's a bit mainstream! First (and probably to be the only) new car I've bought, and has been a cracking little motor and has asked for very little in return for putting up with nearly three years of Oxford-Milton Keynes commuter traffic, before finally escaping that fate when my housemate moved to a new job. Now it doesn't do many miles and is my default car for "when I've managed to break everything else."

      I'll fill in some more details tomorrow - I warn you though that I do tend to ramble...
