For the numb arses amongst us (me) do the people who received a 6 month exemption still have that exemption even if it takes them passed August 1st?

Yes, if your Mot is due in July you still get six months extension, but if it’s due 2nd August you need to mot it before then.

Yes, if you have been granted an extension, the extended expiry date still stands.   HOWEVER, if you present your vehicle early, and it fails, you do not get the extended expiry.  It takes getting some head around, so try this scenario.

As I understand it

original MOT expiry was 4th May.

this was extended until 4th Nov

if you were to present the vehicle on the 15th Oct, and it failed, your fekked, your MOT extension has just  Vapourised, youv'e not got no mot

if you were to present on the 15th Oct and you pass, your new expiry is 4th Nov 2021

Testing Times.

The 2cv is now due end of November, x1/9 end of December and Mercedes end of January. Ho hum.

That's handy, my Alfa expires on the 29th July! Anyone got 30th or 31st?

Going to get it done later in the year though as it's the current daily, probably late October so can do any fixing before the weather turns to shite and my other stuff hasn't been put away for the winter. The Honda Bros hack is the only one I'm going to leave on the full extension as it expires in December but that's OK as it's only a backup and I'm confident it'll pass.

Figured it wasn't going to last much longer, the trade et al were bitching about it a month or two ago (usual H & S BS). Only surprised it wasn't 1st July!

As Issac says above, if you present a vehicle on extension and it fails, you lose that extra time from that moment. I don't think this fact is widely known by most people.

^^ It kind of depends on how diligent the individual is with their maintenance of their vehicles. If you are, then passing the MoT is no big deal, if you generally let things slide or flat out DGAF then yes, you'll probably suffer but you deserve to TBH as you brought it on yourself.

I cant get my head around why people WANT an extension.  You still need to get it tested six months later with a higher chance of it failing.

Short term gain, long term pain.

Why greater chance of failing? Varies on the amount of miles done (considerably less for many) and how well it's looked after. I have no fear that any of my cars will fail.

6 month extension means 6 months worth free MOT. So £50 test per car means you've saved £25 per car a year.

I agree, 3 of our cars got a Boris mot, all of them will pass I'm sure, they get looked after, I've just done the brakes all round on the pug and the insignia has had tyres and a couple of bulbs, I got the Bini's MOT done even though it had a Boris as it shows the EML occasionally and I can't find the issue and wanted 12 months ticket on it whilst it was staying off as daughter no2 who's car it is is going travelling in 12 months, I'm £75 up, happy days.

I've three cars on the road, one is MOT exempt, the Toledo which passed its last MOT with a clean sheet, one has had an MOT extension already, the Clio and the last, the GSR, will get its extension within the next week.

All are roadworthy, the GSR has had quite a bit done to it recently, the Toledo the same and the Clio will be getting timing belt and anything else required in September. Don't really think that means higher chances of failing or long term pain.

30th July for the 405!  Nice one.

Let’s be honest.

99% of people who WANT a COVID extension want one for a reason. And that, in a nutshell, is having an adjourned fail or for suspended maintenance.

Nobody wants a COVID extension for the good of the road going motorist or for the better of the general population.

Which is why it’s good this is closing.

(Says the man who’s had three extensions and can glibly make such sweeping statements.)

1% want to shield and not spend an hour at a test station - which is fine if they cease to use their motor vehicle or keep it in fine fettle.

Why would your car fail at 18 months as opposed to 12 months if you look after it and keep it maintained.  I am always disappointed if one of my vehicle fails, it tells me I was not thorough enough in my checks.   (Granted emissions and brake balance are not easy to check ) I’ve just put two new front tyres on a car in May (socialist distanced mobile fitter) , I don’t have to wait until August to be told.  The MOT works to minimum standards, so they would have been pass and advise.

I do understand that many folk lack the mechanical ability to maintain a car, but I for sure was grateful of the recent extensions.  Fast forward a few months and I think businesses are far more prepared and coravirusaware.

In April and May, i didn’t want to go anywhere near a member of the public and I still won’t go near a supermarket.  Home delivery for me.

An August extension would have been nice (hopefully uk virus infections will be down to an even lower level by then) but i’m A lot more comfortable taking a car in for a test in Aug than I was in April, May, June

i think the DVSA and Gov have struck the right balance with Aug 1st.

Ugh, I better try and book one then. For a car it's not an issue as so many places  but I don't look forward to my annual visit to Luton for my bike one. I'd happily of had a few more months of not seeing it.

The staff at the council place there are great but one of the issues in a motorbike is there's no central locking to press as you go through interesting areas.

There also a chance Bedfordshire may well follow Leicester looking at Bedford's latest results.

The test on my v70 runs out on the 31 July but I don't see it failing
