2002 Renault Clio II 172

It’s only slipping in 4th at full throttle there’s another 10,000 miles left before it needs changed . Honest.
It's not one of these self adjusting clutches where a few good thuds will readjust the mechanism? Of course find out before trying and killing it off completely!

The steeply profiled cams mean that the idle will be a little uneven but if it's markedly so if could just be the plugs. They are apparently very fussy about them and only one brand will do, helpfully I have forgotten what that was. I gave my spare set away with the car.

 

Was yours remapped? Apparently some are setup with a slightly higher idle and that can help smoothen the idle too. 

I don't know if mine is much more lumpy than that to be honest. Might make a video after the next time I use it. It does rock the car back and forth a bit when sat with the brake on. 

It's almost like as if it's going "GO! GO! GO! GO! COME ON! GO! GO! GO!" like an excited little puppy.

I was told it might have a map as according to the previous owner who was also a serial Clio botherer it was one of the best he had driven.

I think you'll get used to it, as long as it doesn't misfire or otherwise behave weirdly you'll be fine.

I was lucky as I had been well forearmed with Clio foible knowledge from the Scotoshiters who have had a fair few between them.

Act what are you going to do?  It was a 1500 quid megane RS with 200,000 miles and given the engine needs to come out for practically anything it's not that much of a surprise something like this happened. I thoughts a couple of times it slipped before but 3 days with my sister have obviously tipped it over the edge. ?

9.2 hours is autodata book figure for a Mégane 225 clutch job. At 50 quid an hour that's only £460. Don't think it's engine out according to that as 9.8hrs for engine and transmission complete removed. Cambelt is 7.8hrs for reference on the Mégane.

Don't they say the engine has to come out to change the starter motor? Heard it's possible in situ but a massive pita.

From the Renault workshop manual for the Mégane 225:

I believe the specialist can do it without dropping the whole lump with a bit of fighting.

Clio 172 and 182 have gotten quite expensive over the last year or two. I owned one for 4 years as my daily driver. Without doubt one of my favourite cars ever... would love to own one again but prices are getting OTT now... gathering a bit of a cult status. With the amount that end up as track day cars... the prices for good standard cars will continue to rise.

They're pretty neat drivers aren't they? 

Did feel right at home being back in a Clio, even though this is a very different drivetrain than the last I've had. 

Does tramline a bit and squirrels around during braking.

Overall I'm very happy with it. Bit of a 10 footer but certainly doesn't embarrass itself in a car park. 

Things to sort list:

 - oil change + filters

 - steering wheel rubbers (already on order)

 - new boot mat + fix boot leak (bungs apparently)

 - polish headlights

 - get new key + reprogram fob (someone coming tomorrow for that) 

 - look underneath to see what state the rubber bushes are in

- Run around for a few months and then maybe change the aux belt if no other big issues. 

 - probably should check gearbox oil level. But then might as well replace if doing that. 

Also could do with a new drivers seat. Lumbar support is broken and the foam is a bit knackered after 150k.

Forgot to mention about my thoughts in the suspension...

Mine is completely stock. Handles great while actually being quite comfortable. Actually one of the most comfortably sprung cars out of all what I own! Over rough surfaces, you can still feel the road but it's not jarring. I genuinely can't see why I'd want it lowered. Unless I had super smooth roads around here, lowering it would make is uncomfortable while slowing it down as well.

If it's not missing, you'll probably need to take off the fuel rail protector to get access to the oil filter, I think the 2 bolts are 10mm.

Easy after that!

Useful to know as I wanted to suck the oil out to save me going underneath, as my garage has still got my 1100 in it and jacked up.

You're right on the handling. My van has been lowered on brand new standard shocks at the front and unknown lowering springs. It's not a patch on my 182. 

Trouble is it's lowered on the torsion bar at the rear and a nightmare to raise i back up if I raise the front. I might try stiffer shocks on the front to see if that helps.
