Tim's Fleet - new V70

Cord Fourteener

Recommended Posts

So I've added 10l petrol and managed to start the BMW and so far it runs. So I think that maybe the sender from the left tank does need replacing. It's only £20 or so. But I don't like the idea of throwing parts at the car until the problem goes away, but given the symptoms so far I think I may need to replace the left hand sender.

Apologies for relying on your brain @jamiechod I very much appreciate your help so far. Would you agree with my logic so far?

  • Cord Fourteener changed the title to Tim's Generalistic Fleeting Phenomena - normal service resuming

Air filter and new plugs arrived.

Had time to put the air filter in today; of course two of the three screws holding the air box in are toast, but no time to faff, I just willed them out and back in again.

Old filter looks ok anyway. New one in.

Plugs can wait.

In Seat land MOT is done, rear brakes are done, full service is done, hopefully that's it with this car for a while. This was all farmed out so it cost a bit... Nearly as much as the car cost 🤣

Should run better now with fresh plugs in it lol. I'm still keeping my eye on your Mondy for the future lol.

Yes there was a slight occasional hesitation at low revs under high load. That issue is now fixed.

Booked in for bearings Friday.

As and when it is time to sell you'll be the first to know 👍 what did you get to replace your pisshat?

Mondeo is back, still reasonably clean on the inside. New bearing/hub assemblies.

£372 lighter today, that cost more than I had hoped, but there we go. It's still a cheap car even if you include this bill, hopefully there's nothing big for the MOT in January. Everything works well pretty much.

Need to change the 12v outlet fuse next, when I find a spare fuse. Or bother to buy one.

Next job is getting the sender into the BMW though, when I have some time to play with that.

I wouldn't normally be posting that I've washed my car, though it is news I suppose.

But it's the first clean of the outside in my care so I get a chance to see all the chips and the little bits of surface rust that I want to (at some point) cover in rust proofer and black Hammerite.

Because the paint is metallic black it won't match exactly, but it will be close enough.

It turns out I missed a bit at usual 🤣

  • Cord Fourteener changed the title to Tim's Generalistic Fleeting Phenomena - Tubular Smells

Progress on BMW. With a neighbour we managed to examine the left hand fuel tank sender.

Hands sent into full petrol tank (not my hands) and also petroly hoses were blown to make sure they are not blocked. That was me.

It turns out that there is no fuel in the left side, so I'm starting to wonder if the left side level reading is inaccurate. Hopefully putting a different albeit second hand sender might sort the issue out. I'm glad to say the issue does look like an inaccurate reading rather anything bigger, the car runs ok when there's enough fuel in. Funny, that.

So tomorrow I'll see if I can finish the job and take some pics.

So, BMW fixing time. Today I ventured fourth on my own to attempt to get the old sender unhooked and the eBay second hand replacement in.

I had to get my hands in the petrol tank but after help yesterday understanding what's what in there with regards the pipes and the way it works (still not 100% on how the fuel gets drawn over the prop shaft tunnel, but at least I know where the pipe goes that supplies the bridge) I managed to get the old one out, find the easy way to get the preyss off. Believe it or not that is what has been baffling me.

Turns out that a few sleeps, a clear head and more time playing and poking supplied the answer.

So it's loosely back together, just need some jubilee clips after making sure it all works the way it should.

Now I need to loose some petrol...

So BMW is all back together and running well, only to find that the heater blower is not working. Changed the fuse, no joy.

Dam and drat!

At least it answers the dilemma that has been keeping me awake at night: Mondeo is the keeper, boring and practical, BMW is for the chop. I think I've ran out of patience with this and that, even though it's such a lovely car to daily. It's just not behaving right now and I need it to.

So, it's up for roffle.

  • Cord Fourteener changed the title to Tim's Generalistic Fleeting Phenomena - not a blow out

Probably about time I addressed one of the few remaining things on the snag list...

20201125_114620.jpg

Surface rust along a scratch, coupled with bubbling de-lamination of paint from a previous repair.

First step: roughly clean area, sand back (with 80 grit only, can't find anything else). Then paint on some rust converting primer to suppress any rust that's still there.

This is not going to be a beautiful repair, I'm using the fact it's black to hide the scratches from the 80s and the thick brush strokes. 20201125_115207.thumb.jpg.77146ba5720dd63d6304b268b3dd77f3.jpg

Predictably it's dried Matt grey rather than gloss black.

Which is fine, it matches the wet road silt spray.

And the metal is protected, objective #1 there sorted.

Maybe, if I'm bored on a sunny day or I get too annoyed when cleaning it I'll flat it and polish. It won't ever be perfect, but it might get better.

But for now I'm happy 👍

I boughted something off eBay, so I went on a last minute jolly up the A5 across Snowdonia to Holyhead to pick it up...

The journey alone was fun.20201130_134019.thumb.jpg.61b1a25590511651a9e88e9c33474edb.jpg20201130_152445.thumb.jpg.333475830c3b9b35434c1a8515b56a37.jpg20201130_153008.thumb.jpg.7dd92cee5c1615c16fcd549dd213eead.jpg20201130_153012.thumb.jpg.6386018248bbd217d5ec04d14f9571a6.jpg20201130_153116.thumb.jpg.aaa527d8c79087d1c1c8ca3d8621a6a9.jpg

20201130_143639.thumb.jpg.0c4a3f0b68f6d4692c1daeeda3c1061d.jpg

arrived at Holyhead to pick up a full set of half fake leather seats.

Guy said he didn't realise mine isn't an estate so the rear seat upright back part might not fit, but I didn't mind.

Even for just a half decent driver's seat £50 is good.

I get a matching passenger seat and I might either fit the rear bench and see if I can make the back part fit, or just fit the head rests, or maybe at if I can sell on eBay/give away here the complete rear seat set.

But I did get what I want for very little money so that's good!

Also a fleet update: BMW is sold, paid for and title transferred but yet to be collected.

Remember to swap your seat belt tensioners over to the "new" seats

Why?

The new seats have their own tensioners, they came off a car with gearbox failure rather than crash damaged.

Both outgoing and incoming seats have airbags! So the advice is unhook the battery when changing.

Fitted our Christmas present #1, a dash camera each. Done Wifey's car first, she commutes to the Wirral and back.

It's an Apeman C370, compact 1080 170° and all that kind of gubbins.

And hardwire kit so it's powered by OBD2 port, motion and G detection etc.

It's one of those things, I hope we never have to use it other than bad drivers lols but in case of a prang it's worth having.

Seat is in!

It's so much better, the old seat was very broken, much more than the photo can show. This one is sweet! Passenger seat to go in another day.

I did strip a bolt hole thread putting one of the six bolts back in though, so I'm on 5 until I can do something about that.

Any ideas?

Next item, also for another day is to put my dash cam in the Mondeo, so we have a matching pair.
