wuvvum Posted June 21, 2021 Share Posted June 21, 2021 I had assumed that the movement in the tensioner was an effect rather than a cause - whichever pulley it is that is making the noise is presumably running slightly unevenly, which is causing the belt to do the same and thus making the tensioner wiggle around more than it normally would. I can confirm the central locking works apart from the rear passenger side door. From what I've read TADTS the lock motor needs a clean. I can also comfirm that the alarm works... Because I don't understand how things work, I'm told there is meant to be some movement in the tensioner, but either the spring could have gone or, more likely, the bearing in the tensioner is squeaky. So the plan is to loosen it, see if I can get it to squeak, then set it up again. Because I don't know how these things work it might take me weeks of trying and failing to get it done. I’ve just re read this, it’s a Mk4 isn’t it, I think that has a stretch belt, the Mk3 had a separate tensioner at the back of the engine near the alternator. Take a picture of what you mean? Take a picture of what you mean? Is a mk4 yes. I've got the engine cover off, when she comes home in a bit ill stick my camera and video the moving parts, there's one that jiggles around. I wondered if the noise is coming from it, @wuvvum said he thought it was jiggling as a result of whatever is making the noise. Clearly I need to gain more of an understanding of what the parts are and what they should be doing. Belt probably has to come off unless you have small fingers but super human strength. You cut the old belt off and use the tools to fit to the lower pulley to wind the belt on, you could pry it on with a couple of screwdrivers I guess. We stripped it in order to recover the panels but also poked and prodded the mechanism and looks like we may have reset everything so it might work. The headlining board and some of the A and C pillar trim broke, the usual stuff. It can all he patched and replaced though I think. To be continued tomorrow. Be interesting to see how you get on with this. There was two of us, FiL and me. We set the front seats forward and tipped forwards at the point of removal and it naturally folded and split. The sun roof nearly got working properly but they were a few catches, literally. I broke a spot weld, there's stuff in there that doesn't align due age and having been used but after hours of fiddling, stripping down, reassembling, repeat etc. etc. it now sits in the hole, square, looks good. I've not re-attach the sunroof handle so it can't get messed up further. So, the headlining: I think i broke almost all the plastic trim. It's all gone back, I've run UHU round the cracks but they all sit straight after refitting. The three-piece head board has gone back ok. The cloth had a couple of folds in it, my rushing did that, there's dirtiness on the new fabric, but it's the used look I guess. I cocked up majorly in forgetting that the cloth is meant to tuck into the actual metal roof hole under some vinyl trim rather than against the head board, and the dome light had a clip that clipped into the board and not the trim, so there's plenty of bodgery gone on. Next time I'll know: source a decent sun roof, make proper notes on dis-assembly, don't rush the covering stage, have clean gloves to hand. Oh, and don't lose any screws. Though maybe I can get screws and trim pieces from the Volvo forum. I lost two screws. This was a two-person job, the other person being FiL, a recently retired jet engine engineer, ex Lucas and Rolls Royce. In other words, a rocket scientist, at least as compared to me; a bagpiper, fiddler and double-bassist. Gaffer tape didn't cut the mustard (!) But glueing the cloth onto the pieces of head board, making sure they are properly and tightly joined, meant the board stayed together and could also fold and unfold again. Result is that the fittings do hold it all up OK. I just broke the fittings. But its all held up. Its temporary as in to look its best it will need doing carefully by me (I wouldn't trust anyone else to do it apart from 740 specialists) and building on the knowledge gained here. However, for the next several years at least its all good. I don't have a working sunroof, maybe I'll find a working one, then it will be worth revisiting, but I'd also need a replacement head board as there is no way that cloth is coming off that headboard without shredding the board. Then I may as well have all new plastics for the interior so they all go back un-broken... Then it would be practically concourse d'elegance and I'd have to quit Autoshite.
