New dog wagon

Was talking to the sister who made mention of swapping her car to something a little more sensible, cue an evening border raid across to North Wales to collect my new purchase.

Really didn’t need it as space is already at a premium, but it was very cheap, has minor* faults and is quite a rare model for a still common car.

Shite journey back as just about every road was closed for road works and we were limited to 60mph due to a knackered wheel sensor causing issues with the 4wd and abs. The ungrateful thing then properly spat it’s serpentine belt out meaning no water pump or power steering for the last few miles ?

Anyway, it’s probably not really autoshite but I’m quite looking forward to getting it sorted in the next few weeks.

Oh, the interesting bit - 3.0 dizzler with a rare manual box and good trim level (plus swirl flap & dpf delete and remap ?)

Having driven it in the past I was genuinely surprised just how quick it is, as well as still being fairly economical.

Fairly minging inside and out, but sure there’s a reasonable thing in there with a bit of work.

MANY - MANY WANTS

Are you sure ??.

This is what’s left of the idler pulley, just have to work out how to get the tensioner off as well - looking at it I think that will mean dropping the alternator off as well.

Still waiting on parts on this. Stupidly I clicked home delivery from GSF thinking it would be next day delivery, only to find it 3 to 5 working days.

Did manage an hour or so on the interior and it’s not come up too badly. Slight bit of wear on the drivers seat, the passenger leg bolster keeps fully extending and an air freshener leaked and took the finish from a section of the heater controls. I already knew about this and have invested £15 in a replacement.

All in all really happy. The only bit bugging me is the driver’s footwell. It hasn’t had a mat in it for the last two years, so I may yet go to town and give it a bit of a wet wet vac.

Working from home at the minute so took a bit of time to have a look at the bodywork.

Black cars are absolute wank and show every little mark - I alway said I’d never own one.

Paint is also flat as a pancake, a definite 6 footer at the moment. A good mopping will do it the world of good, I’ll see whether I can be bothered after it’s up and running.....

Two words.

  1. Stretch Belts - Who invented these, especially when it's not possible to turn over the engine by hand without having a special tool!  Jamming the belt on as far as possible and flicking the ignition resulted in one fitted belt, but one grove out. Attempting to fix this by gently persuading* the belt over while the engine was running gave the predicable result of a shredded new stretch belt.
  2. Stupidity - Spending two hours trying to work out what I could possibly have disturbed that would stop the car from running (the car would start then cut out a couple of seconds later with a plume of unburnt diesel out of the exhaust). Started with the simple things like connectors, then fuses, then stripped everything down again to check I'd got the serpentine belt routing correct (made worse because I couldn't remove the second aircon stretch belt that I'd managed to fit). Then onto the laptop and diagnostics - I'd just started scanning for faults when I suddenly had a thought...…….did I remove the rag I'd carefully stuffed down the inlet to stop anything  dropping straight down into the turbo - cue facepalm!

All up and running now, with nothing more than a slightly bruised ego - no pictures as I wasn't in the mood .

Hopefully just one wheel sensor left to fit!

I’d heard the wheel sensors could be a pain to get out so I drove to the unit, better tools for when things go wrong etc..

It was all done in 10 minutes, no broken bolts, nothing.

Cleared all codes and now have a light free dashboard ?. Being so easy I fitted the replacement heater control panel. It’s a slightly different colour, but I don’t think it looks out of place.

I don’t think it’s a keeper for the reasons already outlined, think I’d rather keep the Cooper S as a daily, even though this is probably much more economical.

If anyone has a genuine interest in this at just a smidge over £2k as is, drop me a PM. 4 owners, 128k. Registration is MJ56BAA for all this MoT pervs (n.b. The  slight oil leak on the last MoT was the sump gasket and was replaced - not by me ?)

Otherwise I’ll crack on with the bodywork and get it advertised properly.

Oof mega bargain so much want but you're too far away and I must resist. This will be gone in minutes.

My boss had one of these in JRG for years and I used to be on court parking/bag duty so got to rag it around Bristol car parks. Seriously quick considering. It met a very West country end. She rolled it by swerving up a Devon bank to avoid a cow, did about 30 yards on it's roof. She walked away.

After having a couple of people interested in this, unfortunately I had to take it off the market. Despite  having no lights on the dash, or showing anything when scanned there is a definite knock when being driven.

Having read up I think the transfer case is getting wound up as the front tyres are new and the rears ready for changing. Problem is that I don’t want to invest in a set of tyres,  if it turns out the transfer box is in its way out. I’ve had a check underneath and can’t see anything obvious like bushes or a seized coupling.

To find out one way or the other, I have done something I don’t do very often and have booked it into a specialist!

As I don’t want to drive it, I popped it down to the unit and have made a start on getting it properly* cleaned up.

There were loads of dog scratches around the tailgate. Although I tried, things were a little too far gone so the satin black had to be brought out of retirement. While not perfect it didn’t turn out too bad!

All now done and doesn’t look half bad. There are a few pin dents on the back doors. I may get the dent man out to see what he can do, but that can wait until I know for definite there is no major drivetrain damage.

Finally got this into a specialist and their diagnosis............tyres!

While some would a complete waste of money,  it gives me the ability to get the tyres changed with less worry of another underlying problem I wasn’t aware of.

I’ve found another set of staggered alloys fitted with new tyres, so I’m going down that route (300+ mile round trip to collect though which is a bit of a backache - will allow me to punt the set currently fitted to help offset the cost.

If a shitter wants it, to save me hassle it can go for £2,250 fully sorted mechanically. If not, the dent man gets let loose and it will be up in the usual places for £3495ono (cue usual idiots).

As an aside this gave an indicated 47mpg on the drive over to the garage and was still over 40 when I got home, including the ‘testing’ completed  by the garage!

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a little run down to Hereford to collect the new wheels.

Had to take the other dog wagon down due to the Mrs’ car throwing an EML light on the night before and going into limp mode - returned an almost respectable 35 mpeegees at a steady 60mph!

Anyway, wheels changed - before and after shots and a little vid of a 2nd and 3rd gear pull while testing ?

While much improved it still wasn’t fully right. I contemplated bailing out At this point and advertising it on eBay. Would have been a bit of a shame though as I had someone on here wanting to take it off my hands.

As a last chance I changed the transfer box fluid and this finally seems to have done the trick.

Best get it cleaned up again, pending a sale!
