The Low Cost Low Liability Thread

Recommended Posts

Hi All, been thinking about starting this thread for a while.

With the eBay thread being a veritable smorgasbord of delights, and the "Low cost Big liability" thread catering to those of us with a financial death wish, I thought it might be useful for us to have somewhere to post sensible buys.

You know the sort of thing: stuff that "cars" well, is the epitome of reliability. Stuff you don't need to fix on Sunday to go to work on Monday.

The kind of thread where, when your beloved shite carks it for the 4th time this month, you can come and buy a dependable plodder for not much dough.

With that in mind, some simple criteria:

Sub £1500

Nice long MOTs

Dependable models (let's leave the s500s with air suspension to Cort16!)

No Major faults - cars shouldn't need repair before they can be used.

Some examples to show what I mean

Exactly the kind of thing I am talking about:)

Having owned a few of these types of cars in the past year or two, I can echo how painless the ownership experience is.

I'll likely turn up a few on Marketplace.

I have absolutely no need for a Toyota Rav4 but it's £600 and 15 miles from me.

Why am I tempted? It's probably crap, but still.

MOT til Nov, and a straight 6. Seems in reasonable order with advisories done. Just ignore the headlights

I think all Post 1998 BMW’s should be disqualified As they’re definitely not low liability . You know It’ll be leaking oil from every orrifice.

So no BMW 320si’s  then?

As a huge fan of low cost big liability thread this makes me sad.

Can anything be as low cost, low liability as the Avensis I bought from these very pages (cheers DavidB) for under £450?

New exhaust, recent brakes and decent(ish) tyres, MOT to Feb 2021. Might have 179k on the clock but no smoke or rattles, suspension is knock free, everything, including the inbuilt Toyota Sat Nav and Parrot phone kit works fine.

I have a feeling that many Toyotas will be featured in this thread. Older ones are the epitome of low cost low liability.

Reg is KN54ZKK, using this handy info posted by Pillock a few years back

You can only do it if the ebay advert has the "Get the vehicle status report" link in the Item Specifics box, where the reg number will be "Y******" or something.

Click the link, in the address it goes to something like http://cgi.ebay.co.u...&vrm_d=Y*** ***

It'll say "Viewjumppageforvehiclehistory" in the address, and then &vrm= with a load of gibberish.

You want to copy the bit after &vrm= until the first % sign - so in the example above, it's WTY2OFhBT

Go to https://www.base64decode.org/and paste that encoded text in, and hit decode.

This example is Y668XAO

That Rav 4 I was interested in has sold already.

At that price, I'm not surprised! Looks like somebody got a bargain.

Shame, but good effort:)

I wasn't expecting an attempted buy before page 2!

Thanks for that, mot history is reasonable and a bonus no fails on corrosion.

£950 for a Vectra B doesn't seem to be very low cost to me?

Sub £1k for a car with full MOT in reasonable order seems ok to me:)

It doesn't matter the make or model - it's about (relatively) sensible buys.

I wouldn't WANT a vectra, but I'd buy one if I needed something to "Car" for a while with minimal effort.

I'd also know @Split_Pin would take it off my hands when done:)

This thread is dangerous. In the process of being interested in that Rav 4 yesterday I realised my finances at the moment allow me to comfortably buy some cheap chod and insure it etc.

Find some more vaguely interesting vehicles in the NE of Scotland, please. :D

This isn't even remotely interesting, but it's cheap, and those VW TDIs are fairly robust aren't they? 217k miles and 11 months MOT for £400.

Oh look! The Yaris from the first post (which had sold) is now for sale again by a flipper trying to make a £100 profit! It moved from Westhill to Bucksburn and in 24 hours has somehow gained £100 in 'value'.
