Thinking about the ridiculous fake exhaust, I get a feeling that might be an IVA thing.  I'd be surprised if there's not something in there about side exhausts needing to vent to the offside of the vehicle only, so you're not blowing exhaust fumes at pedestrians on footpaths.

Would have just made the thing with one pipe though if it had been me!  The fake one just seems ridiculous.  Or just have the dual pipes but pointing out the rear...

could be. I'm getting used to it but will likely go for a custom set up once it the car on the road (and the car fund has recovered, it's seen a battering this year :)

no real progress to report this weekend but @Mi30n came round for a cuppa and we dug out the cheapo ebay spoiler to see how it would look

verdict : ridiculous ! I like it :)

won't be fitted until after the iva, too many pointy edges to worry about :(

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s |----------------| spoiler alert

new rear discs and pads on the mx5 today - the mot is due and those discs do not look pretty (plenty of life in the pads though, they can sit on a shelf and get destroyed on track someday)

IMG_4919.thumb.JPG.96925d72d892bc7102506592036cb1c8.JPG

obviously I had to go for a test drive, managed a good thirty miles round the backroads with the roof down, great fun :)

The pads only seem to cover about 5/8ths of the disc surface. Can you fit bigger calipers?

the later mk2.5 mx5 has bigger brakes which is a popular upgrade for mk1 owners. I've never felt the need to upgrade mine though as I am just running standard bhp. it has taken a serious amount of abuse on track and not let me down (yet). The mk1 mx5 race cars use standard brakes (smaller than these on the 1.6) with yellow stuff pads and seem to manage quite well.

Remember, these are just the rears, the fronts are much bigger.

I have purchased some "glands"

IMG_1323.thumb.JPG.3658b474a41fdd95b3275be9ea7e64f1.JPG

(something electricians use to protect cable joins apparently )

and while I was raking in my parts stash for something else, I happened across a pair of genuine mazda steering rack gaiters - might as well swap them for the cheap universal ones I used that don't quite fit

IMG_1325.thumb.JPG.fc8387da63ab6d7f72a3af88a953cad2.JPG

so, up on jacks and a quick bit of measurement

IMG_1326.thumb.JPG.7d27d06efb5013d61ae622e87ddecb59.JPG

swapped the gaiters

IMG_1327.thumb.JPG.06ce4c8d41df3d56a838071c8bf5e87c.JPG

and fitted my glands (iva man likes glands)

IMG_1328.thumb.JPG.d3be2e693451d059adee4a07ddf6a751.JPG

A bit more measuring

IMG_1329.thumb.JPG.beb464f01f319278d486fcabb34a1484.JPG

and we're good to go .

The steering still points straight but I'll just need to run it up and down the close to double check :)

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - playing with me glands, fnarr, fnarr !

@DVee8and DVee8Jr nipped round to check up on progress at the weekend, I took advantage of having a few extra pairs of hands and we had a go at trial fitting the bonnet

IMG_4981.thumb.JPG.1b56f16a910c033328dff8eeeadfdfd0.JPG

looking good but it doesn't quite fit

that radiator sticking out the front is just too high

IMG_4807.thumb.JPG.b1c7075b8e74104ce6fc396d82e744df.JPG

closer look

IMG_4978.thumb.JPG.4d8a3efca5a93a4561e3b6b996839ca7.JPG

hmm, what if I tilt it back and drill new holes ?

IMG_4979.thumb.JPG.ea8cce741f3dbe4a766ffd635153a8b5.JPG

chop off the excess and see what happens (ignore the juice bottle coolant tank which is temporarily homeless)

IMG_4982.thumb.JPG.cab7b44d9e8791b22e9b6dc9c4796650.JPG

and try again

IMG_4980.thumb.JPG.7b5e997a6d4d5c19cf02f216a9eec711.JPG

still catching a bit, if I can't get this to work, I'll investigate a smaller radiator.

getting closer every day :)

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - on it, like a car bonnet :)

after much jiggery pokery, the bonnet fits - with a baw-hair of clearance but will do for me :)

time to break out the hole making machine and make some holes

IMG_4987.thumb.JPG.2f8d1f04a0bae3195e9ccdead0d743c4.JPG

hinges fitted

IMG_4992.thumb.JPG.c27c30a3bb31664d1c03387d26527d60.JPG

top quality* spreader plates

IMG_4991.thumb.JPG.a49f9db127b084c8f31241f2a3910bee.JPG

the hinges look a bit feeble but are surprisingly sturdy, I might buy another one for the middle, just in case

IMG_4995.thumb.JPG.6637a1f2da5e9a7c4bcc88077c9b7b8f.JPG

bonnet prop needs work :)

IMG_4988.thumb.JPG.fb406245dcaad0ce3fd675a2cea1785b.JPG

fetch one of those big 'alignment' sticks

IMG_4997.thumb.JPG.634c24d0f274aa35f2af034c1c3c3f3c.JPG

sorted

IMG_4993.thumb.JPG.abbde6095fbb868045d6887c4c36a156.JPG

jobs for tomorrow

1. bonnet pins - not sure where to fit these, the obvious place is on the top but they're not exactly pretty

IMG_4999.thumb.JPG.5c58ecc8cde4ba5534f53d3a7784a90d.JPG

2. rear view mirror - I'm a bit annoyed with this, just feels really cheap and nasty which for twenty five quid, I expected better

IMG_5002.thumb.JPG.e74fb4a35c1a8e23961ba54f83a50c60.JPG

but it is iva compliant so will have to stay

IMG_5004.thumb.JPG.7f9dc7895c38aca7d83798b19c7a3808.JPG

can't really see much, hardly worth the effort :(

IMG_5005.thumb.JPG.029514a0fba9f546e7a4093db6d3988e.JPG

but it's all progress - I wiped a good half dozen items off the to-do list but then added as many on again :)

A pretty good mot pass for the mx5 today, courtesy of scareyoldcortina. I have a spare set of shocks in the garage which can go on and I might get round to replacing the broken number plate that I damaged on the way to its mot two years ago :)

IMG_2134.thumb.PNG.848bd491711f1cc484b3069eaed8957e.PNG

not too bad for a 28 year old that's been thrashed round the track many times :)

(and the mot contingency fund I had set aside for the mx5 can now be spunked on the exo)
