gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - look who’s back

@gm, an interesting afternoon we had.

As MrsV8 had gone to Ikea and on her return was going to do her tax return, myself and N02 son ran for the hills or should I say hid down at @gm's , but I massaged my/our mate Andy to say pop down as he hadn't seen the exo finished.

The 3 of us descended on Mark just as he was making new headlight brackets, as Mark noticed that Andy was with us, that was the end of the bracket manufacture, the covers were pulled of the exo and shite was chatted.

Then @gm, came up with a brilliant plan, let's take the exo and the mighty mazda out for a blast. Andy would jump into the exo with mark and adam would come with me, except Adam was going to see his GF. Just at the time Ben turned up in the Abarth. We headed up to my house so I could get a hat and my glasses, Mrs V8 said we were having a midlife crisis, maybe but a quick one.

A 51 mile round trip of our cracking country roads, only spoilt by around 6 miles behind a RR and horse box. Then as we were heading to Stanhope 2 police 4x4's tucked away in a parking area cracking on, luckily I was slowed by 2 cars in front, as a police kuga joined  behind the abarth,  again luckily I was slowed by 2 horses moving through Stanhope. The police stopped at Stanhope police station.

Thanks @gm for a great afternoon getting to hooooon the mighty mazda.

the day started off with me rolling the bini up on the big ramps to see what was rattling underneath - turns out it’s the centre section of the exhaust :(

i can’t hear it from inside the car so that can go on the long term to-do list

04DF61C2-0A04-4091-A937-D1C577535769.thumb.jpeg.63c69eaa7698751cf93a49a6e7652ad1.jpeg

has many leaky joins when cold.

while i had the ramps out, and with an mot looming in march, i thought i’d stick the mazda up in the air and check out the underside

passenger side sill - not too bad

drivers side sill - oh bollocks !

because i know how much @scaryoldcortina enjoys welding up scabby old mx5s, i shall let him have the pleasure.

hence my getting stuck into the headlight brackets instead when @DVee8 arrived.

then hooning occurred :)

much fun on some excellent roads - it did get bloody cold up in the hills, i hope poor Andy has warmed up by now

headlights - a recap

the set sold as part of the kit

IMG_9077.thumb.JPG.ecc76be8613937d6fb8d1dd3bd21904d.JPG

had a rubbish beam pattern and failed the iva

IMG_9075.thumb.JPG.c123ea40061141d86ced643cb04455f4.JPG

so for the retest, I fitted the donor mx5 7" H4 set in cheap eBay bowls

IMG_8601.thumb.JPG.ac81e097ee7bc54f087d6252ed3b9f9a.JPG

which were fugly

IMG_8753.thumb.JPG.d140f6f5f3d222bdd05314f480919af7.JPG

but had the correct beam pattern and passed the test

IMG_9073.thumb.JPG.72ad6b6a5d4356550acd25fe2c92d9c1.JPG

but they were fugly, so I bought a set of minions off ebay

IMG_0649.thumb.JPG.13cea5b2a373c9d0aaa5b9fcbf75c7fd.JPG

IMG_0650.thumb.JPG.96724210393f28543bde29a6ce443460.JPG

but the beam pattern was pish

IMG_0720.thumb.JPG.69ddbaade59046d459a72b2d2693a9ea.JPG

and made driving at night a terrifying prospect

IMG_0681.thumb.JPG.791f1a6c16c773829e85fee6b15f6b3e.JPG

so I went back to the original set

IMG_9077.thumb.JPG.ecc76be8613937d6fb8d1dd3bd21904d.JPG

in the meantime, I fitted a set of 7" leds to the mx5, which performed very well

IMG_8816.thumb.JPG.c3b1ea680a2b55ef2a649b8b4b449893.JPG

so thought about fitting them in the 7" bowls I had used for iva

IMG_8601.thumb.JPG.ac81e097ee7bc54f087d6252ed3b9f9a.JPG

but they were fugly so I went on eBay and bought the same type in smaller 5.25" format

IMG_1483.thumb.JPG.fed10d4556ea9a5ae03126172de4f9cb.JPG

designed as bike headlights, the brackets were all wrong

so I did some engineering*

IMG_1570.thumb.JPG.caed96d69aab924f02a116e156758ad2.JPG

got busy with the rattle cans

IMG_1571.thumb.JPG.ebef8e9d97145bbc7b595395656df130.JPG

got silly with the rattle cans

IMG_1572.thumb.JPG.f06c2bc1700c1344fa074b9e44ce25e1.JPG

spent way too long on the wiring

IMG_1587.thumb.JPG.fdedddaabe6416af97098f39e6f4535a.JPG

IMG_1588.thumb.JPG.33905ae26c8a0bd31807e6f5d3ad06d3.JPG

IMG_1589.thumb.JPG.83d436aeeff3144ba136163f9401e73e.JPG

removed the bonnet

IMG_1596.thumb.JPG.b160f1d933ccb72ab82501230c1610a6.JPG

exposed the rats nest of a wiring tray

IMG_1597.thumb.JPG.9bc2c958e53ded841d0e39a770ce5c72.JPG

brackets turned out well

IMG_1599.thumb.JPG.a01059d645e1cb29ce2c9f93b8ec2bf5.JPG

way more time spent on wiring

IMG_1601.thumb.JPG.f512257f2715d3cacce1b48b70b34b87.JPG

all done (and still a bit fugly)

IMG_1602.thumb.JPG.f29db130d0104514914e8b01e4efec28.JPG

they do sidelights

IMG_1603.thumb.JPG.d0965b17143200bd14d63ff8ca352ce8.JPG

headlights (both dip and beam)

out for a road test - much better

I gave them a wee tweak and set out for a proper road test

taking in the Spire Bridge at Sunderland (@DVee8 will recognise this)

IMG_1624.thumb.JPG.1a842689180964259c58b160fab2f802.JPG

and arrived home two hours later - the verdict : very success ! good visibility and (presumably) not too dazzling to oncoming drivers as I didn't get flashed at once

car needs a damn good clean though

  • gm changed the title to gm's unhealthy obsession with mx5s - finally got some decent* headlights on the Exo

last day of freedom before back to work tomorrow so i thought i’d take the mx5 out for a run up the hills

some stunning roads which i had pretty much to myself

stopped at the Bowes Museum for a quick pic

what a magnificent building, i shall need to come back and visit properly sometime.

new wheels for the exo

DFB65FD7-2208-42EE-8EF6-A85DC9A69E3E.thumb.jpeg.b78b4b46e9e1913e819c5dde0caccc9b.jpeg

the reason for choosing these is that they are one of the lightest wheels available for the mx5, something ridiculous like 11kg including the tyre - i’ll need to dig out the bathroom scales and check

27C2D921-3E71-42F5-937D-D9113B5A806A.thumb.jpeg.af824db2e5acb8a2a82e25a0475811a3.jpeg

when i went to collect them, the sellers son was so pleased another mx5 had come to visit, he got his car out to take photos of the two of them together :)

08A8B9A6-B824-4B4A-8B44-4ABE37EF90AD.thumb.jpeg.6e995114566659fd8c3d819b5c479fa5.jpeg

so how do they look on Exo ?

E9D02354-A4FC-42DF-9389-CEB9F2999881.thumb.jpeg.0602cc64637ddc757165e97882333bda.jpeg

the skinny 185 tyres look lost in the arches

8BC2DFDC-4F3E-49B9-AF16-7426C8E8ED0D.thumb.jpeg.d42e1116cb293519c78831d1245a09ce.jpeg

compared to the previous 195 tyres

image.jpeg.dae7210d0a9bbc2953cdbfe4c75f09de.jpeg

only 1cm difference but the more square edge definitely fills the arch better

i wasn’t sure about black wheels but they look pretty good on the car

CEDCB079-38C9-4631-B6E4-7147B61E1664.thumb.jpeg.f1f02e7d6b2308121e667cfeedd8bfa8.jpeg

only one thing left to do - time for a hoon !

maybe it was the cold weather, or maybe the cheap tyres, but some serious wheel spinning went on :) there’s a road from lanchester up the hill to burnhope which is more like a hillclimb course - i got a clear run at it today and had to fight to keep the back end in shape, tremendous fun !

i popped in to visit me mam earlier, she asked what i had planned for later on - i said i might take the Exo out for a blast, her face lit up and she asked if she could come ?

an hour later :

ED760362-37CA-442E-B10B-579765A05307.thumb.jpeg.1ae89014a448d6862de9c2cda0d37ebc.jpeg

let moderate hooning commence !

she absolutely loved it, i chose a scenic route along the coast and she was thrilled with all the attention we were getting - loads of waves from kids, grown ups, motorists and a lot of bikers all out enjoying the afternoon sun. i did get told off for revving the tits off it whilst going under the motorway bridge, but she was grinning just as much as i was :)

we stopped at the Angel of the North for an ice cream but the van had gone home, so i got us a takeaway from the local pancake and waffle house.

an excellent way to spend a sunday afternoon, and the roads were quiet too as there was football on or something

i had a go at fixing that cheapo rear view mirror

i extended the thread on the end and drilled a wee hole through the ball, a dab of superglue and we’re back in business.

my shaft is now too tight in the hole (!) to allow much adjustment so i raised the front with a stack of washers and my rear view is now perfect

It was the 1st Wednesday of the month classic car show tonight. As the sun had made an appearance there was a great turn out.

@gm took the exo with my N02 son as a passenger, a few donuts/laps of almost ever roundabout gave Adam a whole new hairstyle and an artic driver a puzzle expression.

I took the mighty Mazda, God it's so much fun and driving the long way home never gets boring.
