Next small task was to replace the starter motor bush in the gearbox,

So first remove the starter that Vw handily decided to also use to bolt on the front engine mount,so the engine has to be supported.

Wind out the old bush with an m12 tap.

Old and new comparison. Same as a beetle apparently.

JYD patented VW starter motor bush insertion tool!

Whacked home.

Starter refitted.

Starts much better now,

Another job ticked off the list.

It is now 99% finished, well maybe 98..😂

Its insured and taxed for the first time in years, still has to be tested though.

Finishing touches to the outside being the Wolfsburg badges on the front wings.

Then drive it!

20210307_115552.thumb.jpg.0d38595145a0a0562bb46d364f209f15.jpg

Goes quite well, still a few bits to be fettled, nothing has fallen off yet either.

I'm finding the lowered suspension a bit firm,but then again I'm not 24 anymore.😉

Last job really left to do is the instrument cluster, as the current one isn't for a Gti and doesn't work with the on-board computer.

Getting it tested will be the next hurdle.

Now that the Golf is pretty much finished(fingers crossed)

I decided to unearth my Capri.

It had suffered from the law of horizontal surfaces,I.E I'd used it to store all manner of shite on top of it.

This won't be my next project, although I will make a start on it in the near future.

I want to move it from its current resting place.

20210307_134943.thumb.jpg.79172694393f932c09535cf2316d9ff8.jpg

So I can make a start on this...

20210211_153608.thumb.jpg.77027f54a4878a278e5746312e500e47.jpg

1991 JDM Honda Prelude Si 4th generation powered by the mighty H22A Vtec engine, unusually this doesn't have 4ws,an option in Japan apparently.

A splash of fresh fuel and a charged up battery and she started more or less straight away,I don't think it's run since 2009!

Of course there is also another 3 door mk2 golf Gti shell lurking, along with a 1.6 turbodiesel lump cluttering up my shed.......

That's ace, mate of mine had a 4WS H22A 4g Prelude, the dash on them is one of my all time favourites.

This had its test today, and I'm happy to say it passed first go,not too bad for a car that's been idle for a long time and rebuilt by an idiot.

Slightly less happy about the fact the tester somehow managed to dislodge the sill trim, and it's now rubbing off the door!!Should be easy to remedy but still it's annoying.

I'm happy with the results, fully legal at last.

So far this has done 1,500 miles since being put back on the road,

One issue that came to light has been it liked to puff out blue smoke in stop/start traffic, and the associated oil consumption that this caused.

So,a set of valve stem oil seal replacement was on the cards.

I didn't want to remove the head to do this,so a cheap valve stem replacement kit was purchased online.

Time to delve in.

Cam belt off,and camshaft out, screw in adapter into the spark plug hole, and connect to the airline.

Then you can remove the valve springs and replace the seals.

Bit off a faff, but got there in the end.

20210824_141627.thumb.jpg.7d954a3bcadaaa3638245538a09a931c.jpg

20210824_141633.thumb.jpg.1872d312c1b398b93682c146eac3295b.jpg

After everything was back together,it was time to start it,except it wasn't having any of it!!

Double checked everything, tried again it ran,but extremely poorly, then cut out.

FFS!

Pulled the plugs, number two looked wet, tried another, did the same thing.

By this time I was getting vexed, pulled the rocker cover to check everything looked ok,which it was, checked timing again,it was fine.

What the fuck is up with this thing?

By this time it was getting late, and I was extremely fed up, so locked the shed and took the dog for a walk.

Tomorrow is another day.

Decided to do a compression test today as the first job,all checked out fine, looked over the timing(again)

Decided, fuck it I'm putting it back together, cleaned the plugs,Checked the leads and firing order, and refitted the rocker cover.

Turned the key and it fired straight up,and settled down to idle on all four.

Bit of noise from the hydraulic lifters as they pumped up,but soon went quiet.

Took it for a run and all seems well.

Don't you just love old cars🙄

The oil smoke problem seems fixed too.

Today has been another battle with an oil seal, this time the nearside gearbox output shaft.

20210906_123111.thumb.jpg.968a40d9598d6aaab07573ec36f9bbb6.jpg

Drip on the lower gearbox casing.

The new CV boot I fitted wasn't looking to clever either🙄

20210906_123257.thumb.jpg.1a485729d1167ca8e11c8476c5f9aa87.jpg

20210906_123240.thumb.jpg.5884bf6de9fab73e3dd7300b628a400e.jpg

Less than 2 years old and a smidge over 1500 miles. The factor replaced them FOC,will see how long this one will last.

Driveshaft removed, had to use a puller to get the flange off the splined shaft.

20210906_132339.thumb.jpg.058c88489820e7717ad59c70a02fb952.jpg

Old seal.

20210906_134738.thumb.jpg.b0de3db4adb91e850c0c1d094307b6f2.jpg

Best make sure they are the same...

20210906_160517.thumb.jpg.9931def7413bfff3985db5504d739b74.jpg

Driveshaft flange.

20210906_134744.thumb.jpg.b39d5aea456953c19443bbce2a95575b.jpg

New seal fitted.

20210906_144852.thumb.jpg.9df03e2fb505860d23e1af3490c95a33.jpg

Time to wind in the flange again, used a nut, bolt and a large washer to get it in far enough to put the retaining clip back on.

20210906_150155.thumb.jpg.6a5a8c8c89f423be1d774779a6b4a6fa.jpg

Back together again.

20210906_160529.thumb.jpg.b4256573d7d312f55a9a0bc3f93d148a.jpg

New CV boot,I despise them.

20210906_160558.thumb.jpg.ae6c35dfee16dc744fc580ff14f3595e.jpg

And that's about it,seems to be ok,will check it again after a few miles have been done.

The other side looks a bit damp, but is not leaking oil,so will leave it be for the time being,I got another seal just in case.

It's all fun,isn't it?

Not much to report on this,I hardly done any miles in this at all this year.

I did use it to take some hedge clippings to the tip though.

20220719_161326.thumb.jpg.bef1a4330cf245a8abbbabcf91a5fde4.jpg

It currently resides in my cousins garage.

I have made a start on this though...

1990 3 door GTI 8 valve, non sunroof and clear glass, manual windows so this must have been the base model.

I bought this year's ago,it had a blown up engine, so I converted it to a 1.3 carb,no idea why I just did.

Plan was for either one of my sister's to drive it,but that never happened, then a local Muppet showed an interest that came to nothing.

So it just got parked, and cannibalized for parts, and as a dumping ground for parts.

20220714_143842.thumb.jpg.92dc0855a7e8384ac227bc5632c315f9.jpg

It's rusty, but not totally rotten, but the usual mk2 grot spots are present.

This time it's going to be diesel powered, with power steering.

This rotten Mk3 is the doner

20220704_170550.thumb.jpg.e6c0add9354c7fd66ccc9cc436643133.jpg

Its a 1.9 straight diesel, but I have all the parts to turbocharge it.

Will see, lots to do beforehand though.

🙄 Why do I  do it to myself.

First job was to remove the 1.3 engine and gearbox.

This had approx 70k on it,advertised it online and it sold within a couple of days to a guy who wanted it as spares for a Polo, that put a little bit of money back into the coffers.

20220726_175212.thumb.jpg.667bfa001885564c25419d3072b8a767.jpg

Then it was time to start on the most daunting part of the resurrection, the front offside chassis leg and valence.

This had been damaged sometime in the distantpast and not repaired very well, resulting in the chassis rusting through, inner wing/valence was a mess too,so it was chopped off just forward of the strut tower.

Quite scary.

Time to stitch in the doner part.

Battery tray next,

I forgot to take a pic of the before, but there wasn't a whole lot left of the original.

You can buy a repair panel for this, but where's the fun in that,so I repaired an old doner one.

20220810_141913.thumb.jpg.0f5193ca29c3bf9914df6734521df711.jpg

Old metal trimmed up,and a squirt of weld through primer added.

20220810_154848.thumb.jpg.5f9996b69fe8e9876a4069d6d0a46833.jpg

Repaired battery tray welded in.

20220811_171124.thumb.jpg.23c23d253c62a9e6dacb6872870c3b6a.jpg

Welds cleaned up and a quick coat of primer, still needs seam sealer adding but for the moment it's done.

Next is to add the front end panels and check the fitment, will be a miracle if anything lines up after all this.

Then it's onto the windscreen surround.

A bout of Covid has stalled progress,so hopefully I'll get back to it soon.
