Looks great!

Interesting headlight and bonnet arrangement, I can only recall seeing this style on the 626:

And it's nothing like the Telstar, that's even more differenter:

Nerdy stuff for fun.

This is the most basic spec available, the LX, this can be signified by the unique front end which is slightly shorter than the typical one you'd see in Europe or America and being a saloon.

Despite being base spec, it has colour coded bumpers, rev counter, clock, air conditioning, power steering, 60/40 split folding rear seat, and many more. It is probably more akin to typical mid-spec car.

Despite Mazda 626 being known for having oscillating vents, this one doesn't have it, which is a shame.

This is the F6 1587cc engine which officially produces 90 horsepower. 2bbl carburettor, cambelt and crossflow head.

Rack and pinion steering and Independent rear suspension.

This would've costed it's owner ฿325,500 baht when it was new. Compared to currency exchange at the time it would have been about £6,500 pounds before inflation.

Ford Telstar (which is exactly the same car) was ฿309,000, Lancia Beta Berlina 2000 was ฿420,000. Mercedes Benz 200 was ฿935,000.

This was one of only 2,015 Mazda cars sold in Thailand back in 1986. Comparatively, current generation Mazda 2 is selling about that amount in one month.

They sold more higher spec 1.8 GLX Hatchback than this base 1.6 LX Saloon by the factor of more than 5 to 1. Despite it costing ฿375,000.  People must've been drawn by oscillating vents.

The company that sold these, Kitkamol Sukosol, used to sell Packard, Studebaker, Triumph, Singer and DAF. Before venturing into Mazda in the early 60's. Mazda bought out entirely and set up their own operation in 1999. The company is still around but not in auto industry.

whats the badge is dat da poleece?

1980's vintage badge for Department Of Provincial Administration. I feel the workers for this archaic centralised hierarchical society definitely has an image fitting for this sort of obsolete automobile.

(I know the passenger side under dash cover fell down let's not be bothered about that.)
This is all of the win! my uncle had a Y reg one of these in the same colour. It replace a Princes and started a love for Mazda that lasted for decades. When he replaced this one he kept it in the garage as a spare car (never sure why but he did the same with the Princess) it was a lovely comfortable thing that seemed quite unusual at the time...

First car when I moved to NZ was a 1986 626GT which even had adjustable suspension button - sport setting made it roll slightly less! Great car - drove it all round the South Island with two bikes, a set of golf clubs and a tent!

Mazdas of this era are fit. Are they rare in your area?

I still remember the disappointment as a young  kid when I visited the local dealership with my parents. We looked at the new 323 (so would have been around 85 I guess) and it was a lovely looking thing.

Parents promply bought a Ford Orion. ?

There's indeed a certain sophistication in them even with basic model such as this. Not as reliable as a Toyota, and not as practical as a Nissan. But they're quite solid and stout, almost European in a certain aspect. This even comes with being a pain in the arse to work on compared to comparable Toyotas.

Very very nice.  Those seats look uber comfy!!

They look comfy, but that's nothing to how they actually feel. I'd say, very nice for long distance driving hairnet will be doing.

Bubble economy for you! The Japanese went mad with gadgets and Mazda isn't an exception.

The Mazdas of this era are certainly fit. (Especially if they're high spec like this one isn't).

As to how rare it is. The car's been with me for 6 days and despite actually going out (there is no lock down I can travel all I like) this one is the only pre-1998 Mazda I've seen around. This specific generation 626 is not Isuzu Aska level of Dodo. But they must be about Pangolin rare at this point. Haven't had difficulties finding service items though. But bigger components will be quite a challenge.
