A jaguar MK X 4.2 auto, Sherwood green with brown leather. FJU 99C. The car I owned for the longest of any so far (8 years) and the one that made a lasting impression as it fell on me when I was working under it. I still have the scar across my forehead though now it is just buried in the multitude of wrinkles, but it's still there and I can show it (for a modest fee) to interested parties.

i was 20 way back in 1994. and was running about in a mark 2 polo breadvan.

F184MUP, the little muppet.

the ex. laughed when she first saw it. within 6 weeks she had sold her poo brown (or as GM called it, Brazil nut brown) Nova Swing for the top of the line Polo Ranger..

both were ace cars, coming from the period when VAG really did build good quality motor cars.

only draw back on both of them were the leaky glass sunroofs that both cars had acquired, as was the fashion back then.

I was 20 in April 1979 and was driving my mum's 1964 Mini 850: BAJ 364B. In September I bought a trade in from the garage where I worked: a 1967 Ford Anglia 123E (1200 Super) ETB 988E.

Sadly no pics of the Mini to hand, but look:

After an awful lot of bother finding something suitable as my first car when I was 18, I ended up more or less by accident with a 1993 Citroen AX 1.0 back in 2002.  It had a disgustingly tobacco-stained interior and proved to be comically unreliable during a time when I had zero mechanical knowledge or skills and thought myself quite the engineer for managing to change the spark plugs by myself.  It didn't live long after I sold it, in retrospect I really should have bought the immaculate late 2CV Dolly for £1500 from a local garage which my Dad was keen on but I wouldn't hear of it - I'd like to go back in time and have a word with myself!

I was 20 in 1980, and as a young gentleman about town, I had the ultimate in fanny magnets, namely a 1973 Marina Coupe 1.3 ,resplendent in British Racing Green and rust and the same colour interior as the rather more splendid example in the photo. As an apprentice Telephone Engineer on block release at Motherwell Tech, it was witness to much hilarity, bad driving and all the carry on associated with CB radio back then.

it had a rusty petrol tank which leaked out more petrol than the car used, until my dad and I fixed with something called "petro patch" I think? Needless to say, I absolutely loved it!

My first full time job and still living at home resulted in the purchase of this. Objectively, it’s probably the best car I’ve ever had, although I’m not sure how one would fare 13 years on as it didn’t exactly seem like a quality product. List price was £23.5k (that colour was £1500!!!) but I somehow managed to get it for £16.5k. I had a 3 month wait from ordering to it arriving which I think was the longest 3 months of my life. Loved every minute with it!

A 1980 Fiat 131 Supermirafiori.  Not this one but had it repainted in what looked like Ferrari red. Was originally mustard. (Ugh). That car taught me to be paranoid about rust. 4 replacement doors and a nos bonnet from the fiat dealer for £30. Spent a fortune on it.  Had rear headrests so obviously cooler than everything else.

Top car. As good as my first car, a Lancia HPE 1600. A104LSH. I was 21 though.

I was still learning to drive when I was 20 so it would've been one of my Grandad's cars. The first one was a blue 1.4 Ford Escort, would have been late 80s or early 90s which was then replaced with a 1995(I think) 1.6 Orion Ghia, a red one. I fucking hated that car! To the point where I stopped driving for about 5 years. I can't remember exactly why but I think it had something to do with the slightly more powerful engine, it was more nippy and less controllable. Rather ironic when my daily is now a 2.5 turbo petrol but I felt the same way when I test drove a 1.6 Ford Focus after passing my test 6 years later.

Inbetween times, Grandad got a 1.8 8v F reg Audi 80 which I both learned to drive in and became my first car. It had an oil leak in the engine which my instructor's partner, who was into Audis and a mechanic, couldn't trace so I scrapped it and bought a Mk2 Mondeo 2ltr. I really liked the Escort, first car I ever drove, so I wanted a Focus but couldn't afford one, so I got the Mondeo instead. I didn't think the Audi was worth anything in 2006 but I know better now. I wish I had sold it on to some one to fix it, rather than scrap it.

At the age of 20 I had one of these:

image.jpeg.cfb2cec9cb7f563eb902f0e890e04c5f.jpeg

A 1975 VW Passat 1.5LS, except mine was gold. It was 7 years old when I bought it to replace a Mk2 Ford Escort and was a revelation as it introduced me to the concept of a car being reliable enough to use as daily transport. I had it for 3 trouble free years and misguidedly replaced it with a Scirocco GTi.

Passed my test one month before turning 19, drove the polo for a year and when the insurance became cheaper bought the astra.  Fitted  a complete leather interior and door cards to the astra and also fitted later "snowflake" alloy wheels with red centre cap on.  Honestly my faviorite car ive owned.  but spent some time unemployed and needed some money so I sold it... to my father who still has it to this day 3 years later so its been in the family for about 6 years now.

Sold the polo shortly after buying the astra and so it once driving by but the number plate no longer exists so probally scrapped by now.

Ah, 2013....

I had my second car, but the first one I'd bought (Was using my dads Clio till I had enough for my own)...

The Civic Aerodeck 1.6 VTEC, W482 OLF or 'Wolf' as I called it.

I don't recall the context of the photo, I'm sure there was some 'edgy' reason or whatever. ?

Great thing, enough power and also space. Ended up going all scene with it with a nice set of coilovers and blingy alloys, but was a usable height! Would love another.

Not this car, but one just like it - 3500 manual, £400 with no MOT.  Drove it like an utter bell-end for 9 months (still without MOT or tax), then got nicked and had to stick it in an auction to pay the fines.  A hand-painted HC Viva with 1159cc followed it, what a come down.

23 years ago I was still either driving my first car, Mk1 Fiesta 950 Base inherited from my Granddad...

...or the MK2 Escort 1600 Ghia auto I bought for £150. I know I definitely had the Mk2 when I was 21 and my daughter was born.

I also had a MK2 Estate project in the garage, and god knows what else. My teens/early 20s were a blur of buying cars and then working out where the hell I was going to keep them, I had 9 at one point and it was getting ridiculous, I had two lock up garages and cars at my mum's as well as at home and in a car park.

Was 20 in 2000. Ugh, that was 20 years ago. Was still driving a 1996 Fiat Cinquecento at that time with a few other vehicles smattered about ('72 Vauxhall FD, '84 Transit LWB, '65 Hillman Superminx).

Cinq was on its' second head gasket by then because I drove it like a complete moron.

Still sad that the Cinq came along because that was bought instead of a D reg diesel Maestro.

Those were the days
