Part 1 is slated for Sunday 👌😬

Mission completed for stage 1! It was strange to turn up to the visitor centre and there actually be people there unlike the cold December mornings we're used to, but hey-ho.

The 480 is running nicely. Everything making it trustworthy is performing as it should, but oh my days the dash does like to rattle...

Volvo 480 - M_AAF - Headlining

There’s not much left I want to do with the 480, but one of those things has been addressing the Bedouin Tent in the back behind the sunroof pocket.

130998272_2021-05-08(01).thumb.JPG.1b555970538898fa69acac6d11c2d0dd.JPG

My wife was away yesterday so I spotted my window of opportunity to bring the headlining inside for a bit of a re-glue with some high temp trim adhesive.

It had been raining on Friday and the boot seal is a bit weepy so I also took the opportunity to use her Vidal Sassoon to dry things out before gluing. I only got caught because I put it away properly, haha. It cleaned up easily with a stiff brush and gluing it back together was without drama – only now I’m wondering if I applied enough glue.  Hmm, I guess time will tell, but it was easy enough to remove and re-fit so I’m not against doing it again should I need another go at it. Also I'm not losing sleep over the leak - I intend to make hunting that someone else's problem, with full disclosure, but it seems like all 480's leak or have leaked at some point.

No "action" shots, I wanted to act quickly once the glue was down! While in there though, I got a bonus superglue fix of the interior light, which I didn’t know was broken but now I know is fixed. :D.

I’m probably not going to do owt else with the 480 now, having fixed* my initial mental snag list and because I’ve almost completed the 5th Biennial LeJog trip which was its raison d'etre for being in my collection (Just the majority of the miles still to go, ha).

I’m struggling with the idea of For Sale-ing this one though because I really really like it, probably because my standards are set from a 440 baseline… Alas, I’m currently juggling the Granada, Mini, MX-5, 440, (Focus) and probably more lucky accidents to come. If I’m “done” with the 480, I’m probably telling myself it’s time to sell.

The 5th Biennial "Sports-car-or-at-least-summat-with-popup-lights" LeJog Reliability Trial - Part 2

This weekend was the weekend. Part two of the “5th-biennial-Sports-car-or-at-least-summat-with-popup-lights"-LeJog-Reliability-Trial-because-I-don’t-know-why”.

It started with a visit to pet A&E at 9pm on the Friday – not ideal – but with surgery arranged and a wife to pick up the pooch and care for it, I threw my overnight bag in the 480 and set off with my tail between my legs up the A1 in its near entirety. Our 1st stop was around Darlington to capture the epic mileage in the previous post. While there I stopped for a photo at an abandoned petrol station because they’re fascinating to look at. Just ask @motorpunk. Although, shortly after arriving the proprietor wandered out from a nearby hedge to serve us... Not abandoned. He only had diesel, so we settled for his entire stock of Raisin and Biscuit Yorkies.

Things were then pretty un-eventful all the way up to our overnight destination in Dingwall near Inverness. We ate a takeaway Pizza on the streets at 9pm because we were still not allowed indoors just yet in Scotland’s Level 3 restrictions. At 4am we set off up the A9 for John O’Groats, a section of road becoming quite familiar to this Essex resident… See below success with and without popups popped.

There's a new sign since I was last there in the Alfa, so I took a photo there too. I've really seen this place develop over the last 10 years 🤣

837465754_2021-05-16(21).thumb.jpg.a0f44f3154562e6b5ba5a843b3f01bed.jpg

Entering John O’Groats I annihilated a pheasant, cracking the splitter in two places but doing much more damage to the poor pheasant. The 480 is not a friendly shape at the front... Fortunately it was not a metaphor for the remainder of the trip and we spanked it home to Essex in time for tea. The dog is ok.

I've taken a deposit on the 480, having completed my goals for it, it was time it moved on. You can't keep them all, but I was very close to making excuses for this one... Would I have another 480? Absolutely. Fantastically practical and interesting choice, not too hard to keep on the road and great in modern traffic. I think there'll be another 480 in my future at some point.

So, fleet sit rep, pictures as of 23rd May 2021:

1) Daily, back to the 440. (really need to finish laying those slabs for parking on 🤣)

2021-05-23.thumb.JPG.0129db12e99252ec85e22387aad9e4f1.JPG

2) Daily #2 (for the wife), the Focus. Approaching 150,000miles, crashed twice, still with us.

2021-05-23.thumb.JPG.954866b253ef6c1f7676f9e4d0b0bae7.JPG

3) Project #1, the floating Granada. Fuel leak and exhaust leak repairs in progress. Brake rebuild required. Registration in the post (hopefully). Probably a load more unknown evils to be discovered before we're road worthy.

2021-05-23.thumb.JPG.9b889e7ff5d85e12b8099ff987a440ee.JPG

4) Project #2, the Mini. This is still awaiting its visit to the Mini specialist in June for more bodywork (and a new MOT). Probably ready in time for winter.

2021-05-23.thumb.JPG.82c16306f737164117f7ac5773511a9a.JPG

5) Project #3, the MX-5. Always bottom of the pile, both metaphorically and literally. Needs exhuming before any work can continue.

I must resist the recently acquired space after selling the 480 from being instantly filled...

Ford Granada - PHH 183P

The rego has been allocated to the Granada, huzzah.
Internets tell me HH is Carlisle? I thought age related imports had their own “block” with the DVLA that fell outside previously issued area codes? Maybe a plate expert/superhero like @LightBulbFunwould know. HK would have been good, an Essex Granada!

The question is: Is it pronounced P-hibep or Fibep?

The question is: Is it pronounced P-hibep or Fibep?

all possible area codes where used up by 1932 which is when the first 3 letter 3 number plates came in to get around the issue :) (before that Plates where just 2 letters and 4 digits with the 2 letters being a county council code)

the DVLA simply issue plates/series that where not issued in period as age related plates today

so for example PHH-P was never issued in period as during the P Suffix period Carlisle was on MHH-P so that left PHH-P to be issued by the DVLA as an age related series :)

and this works because the first Serial letter, just went up on its own accord, it never changed because the suffix changed, For example see KOO120N and KWC403P,

note the suffix change but the serial letter just keeps going, until they hit the end of the location markers for that area, (Essex in this case) then they wrap around again but with the next serial letter, so after KJN-P LEV-P was issued and so forth

with this info in mind, you can then quite easily spot when even a suffix or prefix car is on an Age related plate :)

because you quickly figure out what Serial Letters where issued in period with what Suffix/prefix's :)

and then ALL age related plates pop out like sore thumb, not just the suffix-less plates

and the world is never the same again LOL

Cool. I did not know that with regards to up to e.g. MHH-P being used in period so it picks up from PHH-P on an age related series. I should have delayed it to get RHH-P for my initials, lol.

So why Carlisle in this case thought? Do the DVLA spin a random area generator? The Granada came from France, I got the car near Lincoln from a classics dealer (who sorted the NOVA), so was wondering where is the link to Carlisle 🤔

ah theres a perfect excuse to justify the purchase of another August 1975-July 1976 vehicle :)

(the Granada is very nice! very brown! looking forward to seeing more on it!)

pretty much from what I can tell yeah, since the closing of all of the Local offices, new-old (LOL) vehicle registrations are not issued a location related plate, although once they pick an area I do notice they tend to stick to it, like @strangeangel imported and registered a 1964 Motorcycle and that got a YHH-B plate (and before that I noticed a few London xBY-x age related series)

however I think age related plates being issued to a vehicle that robbed of a plate I think are issued according to where the robbery took plate

for example LVX250J was robbed of its plate in London and got JBY503J and XEV88S was robbed of its plate in Scotland and got VES108S for example

but these are pretty old examples now, so perhaps the policy has changed

so I THINK for example if you took PHH183P off your Granada the DVLA would issue you an Essex related age related P suffix plate I THINK

(although as no month is recorded you may well end up with an R Suffix plate instead, I have not quite figured how the DVLA issue plates for vehicles where only a year is known)

It’s all pretty fascinating stuff to me, genuinely.
I did think of getting an OO, EV or HK plate, just as a private plate for the “Essex factor”, but I tend to not like private plates in general. I feel that the reg a car is born with is intrinsically part of its identity and I did think that because this was getting one 45 years late I’d not be fussed about changing it. I was wrong...  The Granada is very much PHH 183P to me now and anything other than that (or 336 PR 87, it’s French reg) seems not right.

Time to get some raised letter Frampton’s on order $$

Ford Granada - PH_P

Not a great deal of progress so far...

Motomobil seem to be a cornucopia of parts for this model, but with a full exhaust system in my order, I'm being quoted daft postage. Yes, the figure below is just the postage!

Sending Costs Parcel 50kg 166 x 80 x 61 cm - Gurtmass 448cm = 775,00 €

The rest of the parts on the order are on hold at ransom until I can sort something sensible out. I'll probably cancel the exhaust off the order so I can at least get started on the brakes while I think of what to do. I'm tempted to drive over to Zorneding in person to pick it up as some sort of sadistic driving holiday on a vendetta against 775 postage, but the world is a mess still and I'm put off wanting to deal with PCR tests and Green Cards.

Meanwhile, have a picture of it languishing dormant (like it has most of it's life to be fair)

Ford Granada – PH_P - Wheels/Tyres

Another small chunk of progress occurred today. Having not been on the road in decades, the tyres were toast on the ol’ Grandiddle.

Plan A (not followed) was to scrap the tyres, give the wheels a tidy-up at home with my short attention span and some aerosol paint and slap on some mid-range ditch teasers (not quite ditch finders), all in an attempt to not get too precious and to save some money for areas that need it more.

Once I got started, what I discovered was that all 5 wheels were supporting Innertubed tyres in 185 HR14 flavour.

1676264480_2021-05-13(01).thumb.JPG.0b7125b6b38ac06af7e82f1efa7779b3.JPG

This is the oldest car I’ve had, so I didn’t know what the deal was between tubeless and tubed rims, and whether I could even put a tubeless tyre on (Ask a Shitter to the rescue).

General consensus was that these wheels should have started life tubeless anyway and I’d be fine, but a good refurb, i.e. better than I was planning, should see them sorted around the valve seat and not porous. It probably wouldn’t have been a problem, but I like a good wheel and I knew a place who did a nice job on my Mini 10” steelies. Here is an example of the before:

1503913935_2021-05-14(01).thumb.jpg.406e5c9bb42c5693f8731f2cb29059e9.jpg

682739403_2021-05-14(03).thumb.jpg.cf5a5effe069843beb3c420257fa066d.jpg

Meanwhile I sourced my own tyres. Not too much choice on a 185 HR14. Michelin Historics at £250 a go, fitted, or a Hancook or a Maxxis offering at £50. I’m sure the internet wants to see me spend for “only the best”, but I’m trying to not let things escalate here and the refurb plus the Michelins was heading towards a modest chunk of the price of the car! I’ve gone for the bicycle brand tyres to match my pushbike – mostly because of the debacle ordering the Hancooks multiple times from different suppliers only to be told each time that they can’t get them…

The results however are quite pleasing:

Ford Granada - PH_P

The Granada’s been off the road for a while, maybe since the 90’s, so there’s plenty to do before I take to the roads myself or it gets nicked under its own steam.
There’s a slow rear brake rebuild going on at the moment. Both drums had been stripped before I got it (I’m guessing previously seized) and some chisel action has taken place on the drums.

AAB6495C-AE6C-4D1A-8D67-CBDA6C00E459.thumb.jpeg.7c42507589fdc4c6f3f91f3ab0391325.jpeg

I have all* the mechanisms in a Pringles tube that came with the car - and now I have new shoes, springs, wheel cylinders and replacement refurbished drums to add to it. The only bit I seem to be missing is a handbrake adjust plunger (it uses a spring plunger type thing instead of screw) for one of the sides.

All I had to do was remove the old wheel cylinders. Pain in the arse, obviously, but soaking, tapping and heating saw it out in the end. Easy to type… but that was two weekends work 🤷‍♂️. I still have the other side to do. One casualty was the brake line. The fitting loosened in the wheel cylinder but wasn’t free on the line itself and sheared. It was marked for replacement so not too much heartache. Y tho?

Anyway, a pretty standard affair for work on an old car. Some unobtanium to find, the actual re-assembly still to do and then doing all again on the other side. Whoop.

I got to use the slide hammer again today. Love that thing. I needed to pull out a dent in the front valance of the Granada so the new number plates could sit straight.

Then, due to buying raised letter plates I made an intermediary bracket as the mounting points on the car interferes with the letters. Binky eat your heart out.

Finally, plated. It’s not tightened up yet as I want to shave a little off the bracket then paint it with some of the Por chassis paint stuff that will be going on underneath.

Rear fitting is the same steps in reverse. Well it’s not, but that’s what passes as a pun at this time of night. No bracket at the back though, it fits straight to the bumper trim.

A fairly significant moment - I think of it as a christening for a car, bearing in mind this is a new registration. I’ll have champagne tomorrow morning I guess.

The Volvo, though looking good here, is feeling old and quite worn all of a sudden. It’s hard to put my finger on the moment it happened, but not so long ago it was rolling along and feeling really good and then only a few hundred miles later everything’s getting on top of it. Not sure if other people experience this rapid uncalled for degeneration, but I guess it’s fairly common.

It’s hesitant at low rpm, I think an engine mount has gone, the aux belt has become very buzzy, the wing and door rust (deliberately not pictured) has advanced somewhat this season and the heated seats have given up. It’s due a cam belt too. All different maladies, all arriving together. Wonderful.

The hesitation at low rpm has become a complete out-and-out misfire under any kind of load. It happened all of of a sudden when joining a final dual carriage way at the end of a recent trip, so luckily I was close enough to home to make it back un-assisted. I've tried contact cleaner and water dispersant first (along with checking for obvious loose HT connections), though owing to warm weather Pina Colada consumption, I've snookered myself for test driving it for today. It's idling ok, but then again it did even when it was doing its Volvo approved breakdown (i.e. a breakdown where you can still drive home). If no good I'll check the plugs next, but there are internet points up for grabs for any other suggestions. In summary, it idles fine, revs up fine in neutral, but apply load to drive away and it misfires.

The intention is to get this thing to FOTU, the only time I've considered taking it anywhere specifically on it's own merit in the years since I've had it, so it'd be a shame if this is the one time it lets me down!

Also here are some pictures of the developing rust 😬. I tried to take one as a close up panorama and created this monstrosity. 440 limousine anyone?

turned out to be the coil

To corroborate this idea, my Capri had the same symptoms and it was breaking down mostly when it got hot. That was fixed with a replacement coil.

This recent Volvo escapade was after about 100 miles on a busy A12 yesterday in the baking midday heat…

However, the Volvo doesn’t have what I’d consider your traditional basic cylindrical coil system. It’s still a king lead into a distributor type setup, albeit with a load more low voltage control wires doing I don’t know what, but I guess it’s principally the same and can fail in the same way.

That looks a bit like the setup in my Favorit.  At launch it was a mechanical dizzy but for the later ones they left the mechanical bits of the dizzy including rotor arm but have a coil unit which looks pretty similar to that which just keeps firing high voltage pulses and lets the rotor arm figure out the distribution. So in effect a crude electronic ignition which doesn't run from the ECU

M_CEC - Volvo 440

One new ignition coil later and the 440 is reet again [after a sub 1 mile test drive from cold. Next journey is the 250 miles to and from Festival of the Unexceptional, what could possibly go wrong?!]

(No, there’s not supposed to be a screw there, it locates on a pin on that casting)
