New Zealand workshop mayhem..my chod and general photography

Recommended Posts

It all started with me making a dumb online purchase whilst in Germany last year...in Auckland..a 1974 MB W114-280E..i  failed miserably..bastard didnt say it had sat outside two years..there was enough water in the boot to drown puppies...bastard we reckon set up a shadow bidder against me..i overpaid of course..theres a design flaw on the firewall where the sound insulation acts as a moisture trap..they all suffer from this..so two nice big holes either side..its a engine-dashboard job out..and frankly in NZ..not worth it. We did get it up and running..oil cooler needs braised..and once thats done..it will be flicked and i should come away looking like an absolute plonker. It did however set up and rekindle my frienship with James in Wellington who has a one man- one dog classic car workshop..we originally met in 2004 when he was a much younger fella when i sold him another of my idiotic purchases..a Borgward Isabella.

The workshop is in Petone-Lower Hutt which is actually the old area where NZs main car assembly plants were for the lower Nth Island. James does standard repairs and tuning..and then buys..fixes and flicks cars. Hes always wearing a good shirt. His collection is this:

Mk1 Ford Zephyr (since sold) which is a New Zealand assembled version..built in our vicinity so wasnt far from where it was born originally.

Humber 10..which James was nearly finished until some MOFOs came and stole a lot of his stuff for scrap..which included a rebuilt engine he'd just finished.

image.jpeg.d77a1e0ac52f352f6597411431666ac5.jpeg

1946 Austin 8 thats purrs like a kitten...James likes patina..bodgey paint and torn leather...but hes a stickler that everything important works..theres no MOT free in NZ.

image.jpeg.5cf7af579b88dbd13b435b8798b05baa.jpeg

1965 VW Kombi that hes had 10 years so obviously didnt pay the normal over inflated price. He knows the body has to be done again..so its in hibernation.

He also supplies the film and advertising industry with cars and is a set co-coordinator..this is actually a lilac Marina with purple vinyl interior that was acquired for said purposes. Doesnt show in photo sorry.

His Austin Maxi..was a one owner car..i watched him extract and rebuild the gearbox..and then do the 200m dragstrip lane out of the workshop to settle the hydropneumatics over the speed bump

image.jpeg.5ecefdae9d2f568e73ed6da569c10010.jpeg

The $200 Riley 4-72 that was the unwanted ugly duck at the end of a classic car museum auction in Hamilton..dry stored since 1982..95% straight and rust free but missing carbies..which James had a set of in his hands 5 minutes of its arrival...its kind of what i love about the great preservation order of New Zealand.

So now onto more  of my impulsive acquisitions..TBH..most of it was very cheap..i just happened to buy a lot of cars!

1971  Jaguar XJ6 S1 SWB. Sth island car which means pretty much 99% rust free..thats the good part...it was left outside without a couple of spark plugs in it so moisture got into the engine and its poked..it will run..but damn...imagine rocking up at the Jaguar Drivers Club with it sounding like that..flatcaps firmly pulled over ears..so i got another engine and James is currently inserting it into its hole...the interior has seen so much overpowered UV rays the red leather is good enough to sell off as dog chews...the windscreen seals have gone..so i had to bail a large puddle out from underneath the back seat..it has a dent on top of the boot from when the caravan came off and disappeared into an Alpine range..its got oversized tyres..15 -175s..which James insists have to go...i bought a set of beauty trims of an old nutter with 50 Jags-Mercs and Minis in the Waikato....the original plan..was..to get it to Europe-London and flog it...we l see what happens...its the 77th built off the line in 71...and considering they didnt really launch until 1969..makes it an early example

This morning I got up late because why not.

And then this thread happened. Four things, welcome back in spades Rab. Yes @hairnet I have briefly met him, and hopefully will again after the current epidemic.

The white BX 16 I owned was bought in Wellington and has gone back to live there. so until a good photo I wondered if it was my old one, but no. Also mine has been re-registered so now carries a new plate from about 4 years ago.

The Vauxhall 16. My dad owned one after ww2 and I know it was about in the Matamata  area for many years after he sold it in about 1951, could it be? not very likely !

The Rover GY 7846,  I owned a 1973 Holden Kingswood GY 456 in Auckland in the 1980's.

YAAS!
FotoRabia's back! Ace pics, as ever.

We never know who's gonna crawl out of the woodwork.

I've not met him, but I met his good friend at Uluru - Rab was a great help in planning my 2011 (?) trip across Oz.

Those are nice photos you have there...and it is good to see so many classics preserved in  New Zealand.

Does your friend still own the Maxi? I see a Maxi with the same registration is up for sale on Trademe:

It looks in fairly good condition! And it has the parcel tray still included - which I've never seen on the four of five Maxi's that have come up for sale on Trademe when I've been looking.

I did see the comments!

I think people looking at cars need to be mindful that during the lockdown the ordinary buying and selling of cars (With things like WOF and mechanical inspections) just arent't possible at the moment.

I wonder what went wrong after the head gasket got replaced?

Asides from the excessive smoking mentioned it seems like a good runner. If I could afford a second (Non-daily) car.......

The other Jag i bought. 1975 XJ6 S2 SWB..came out of the local Pick a Part in Lower Hutt.Spent its life with Edith in Titahi Bay where she cruised around chain smoking.I found its last warrant-MOT check from 1999..it only failed on tyres..she bought a new set..and then a badly placed chip in the windscreen took it off the road. It obviously sat in her garage for years as it has storage scratches all over it...theres only a 5p piece of rust scab on the inside passenger door. The tanks now have the Toxic Avenger residing in them so they have to come off and get cleaned. Its one of the New Zealand -Nelson assembled versions of which they built approx.1300 cars. The speedo is in KPHs.Its got a pale blue velour interior which is a bit grubby..backseat is a bit torn...none of the windows go down..but a bit of CRC spray might loosen them up. Theres annoying surface rust on the rims cos it did sit outside for a bit..coastal dammit..but im on the look out for a good set of rims.

  • 5 months later...

I also bought back my landlords Standard Vanguard 6 that I helped him acquire in 2009. Ross..my former landlord is NZ's most famous ceramicist-potter--designer..and all around good guy. Very sadly about five years ago..he suffered a terrible fall off a 13m scaffold and has suffered a terrible brain injury which has left him partially sighted and a massive personality change. His cars has been stashed in on of his warehouses..so i approached the family and bought them all as a job lot . I got the Vanguard..two Jowett Javelins and the Whambino Fiat which i featured in some other thread. The Jowetts had been an unsold item on a classic car auction in 2005..so my former Boss Rua took them as part payment off Ed Boyd (the builder of my Fiat 500)..Rua left them in Ross's warehouse..never paid his storage fee..so a gentlemans agreement was settled and Ross took ownership of them. I lived above them for a while..Ross tried to get the black Deluxe on the road..and the garage failed to get it running..the turqoise Deluxe..their both 1954..which is funny cos Jowett went out of business in 1953..so these pair would of been the last off the line..shipped to NZ...and then registered as 1954 's. The black one immediately went to Wellington and James fitted a waterepump and she ran like a dream. The turqoise Javelin is missing an engine..but we did get an extra panels..doors and bumpers in the deal. My idea for it is to do a Monte Carlo 1952 or Bust replica..biff the back seats..larger fuel tank..fog lights..stopwatch..a map light..flask..packets of Fishermens friends.Im going to crowdfund the build through the Jowett club..and then make it available as period event car so the enthusiasts can go rallying

Whereabouts are you based now Rab?  Am moving to Christchurch in November so would be good to work out where the Kiwi Shiters were all based.

There is some lovely old stuff there, the lack of salt on the roads means Trademe.co.nz is a haven of things you struggle to find here.  Problem is they know what they are worth so dont expect to find a $500 Escort...have a look at some of the Morris cars available and halve those prices to get the sterling equivalent

I cannot survive without cannabis...the fuckhead Govt and NHS only supply it to a number of children where as Im left to literally deal with it myself..if i can get it ,,with a 240quid per month bill attached..of which i can hardly afford...it literally keeps me alive..so if u still want me around in the future..please give a wee bit as life is not much fun.Link below.
