That last photo could have been taken 20 years ago! (Ignoring the Daewoo Matiz hiding behind the Polo)

I had a J reg Metro & an M reg R8 as well,both the same colour 😀

Are those the only two fails? Could be a lot worse, especially if you were expecting the have to get the welder out.

Yup.

Exhaust on order, 25 quid from ebay.

Side repeater is my fault - it's the wing I replaced, should be an easy fix.

does the metro still have the little lift pin on the carb? if not you can use a bent bit of wire down the intake to do the "lift the damper to check the mixture" thing that you can do on a Skinners Union carb

I've no idea, haven't gotten that in depth yet.

Oh, I realise I forgot to share the clutch story.

I got quoted 300 + vat from local garage British Legends, and about half that from a BL specialist (but that would have meant travelling into South London, leaving the car there and picking up the following day).

I was talking to a neighbour and he said 'I'll ask my guy'. A quick call later and a price of £100 was agreed.

It still meant leaving car and getting a train, but it wasn't as far as Croydon.

So, on the Monday I set off for Barking. I arrived to a seedy back street where a man was parked blocking the street in a Mercedes, and who didn't even make a move when I pulled up. I called the mechanic and he started to come round, at which point a white transit arrived with some Irish blokes in and they were talking to the mechanic who was walking down, while driving slowly beside him. They were asking about a transit pickup the mechanic had. He was quite blunt and rude to them, so I was already on edge about shit kicking off. I left him the keys and followed his vague instructions on how to get to the train station nearly a mile away. The estate I had to walk through was 'interesting'.

A day or so later I got the call to say the car was done. He winged about how difficult the job was and sounded very grumpy. He insisted I collect the car that day as he didn't have room. This mean getting the train back into Barking and walking through that estate after sundown. I brought my partner along for protection, as I'm a wuss.

We arrived to this back street again to find about 4 or 5 blokes crowded round the back of a van. The mechanic was there too, but I couldn't tell until I got round the back. He pointed to the car, gave me the keys and whinged again about how difficult the job had been. I have him an extra 30 quid for his trouble and we made a hasty retreat.

Luckily all went well, car drives great and all my crap / tools were still in the back where I left them.

All in all, an experience I would rather not repeat!

It shows that sometimes you have to grin and bear cowboys if they get the job done for cheap. You make the choice, you have to live with it!

We had cowboy house removals. I was so angry with them for so many things but didn't have the courage or patience to tell them to go away so we can arrange a proper (and properly expensive) removals.

Let's just say all's well that ends well.

Exhaust fitted*

It was a bit of a bodge at the rear as one part wouldn't budge, so have had to cut the old one off and put a sleeve over the join. I've made sure to only cut the old bit of pipe on the back box, so when I come to replace that, it will be easier. I hope.
