Was hoovering the Tourer out today, and discovered this chain under the seat. I presume it was wrapped around the bar under there, hence I hadn't noticed it before. It is looped around one of the bars and bolted together. Any ideas? A rudimentary steering lock? Some sort of bondage thing? ?

A friend says that's a "prince Albert ring chain".

I do hope you were wearing thick gloves.

Quite sure I saw that in Rayleigh this afternoon. Is it a D reg?

F reg. It's a 1.3 apparently and the 20yr old lad who owns it inherited it from his late grandfather, and he says he wouldn't sell it as he knows it will just end up modified and ruined. His girlfriend drives a Daewoo Matiz. Had a good chat with him today, seems a level headed young man, unlike me when I was his age. My Polo was red with bright yellow wheel trims and badges...

Yep, popped out to do the boot lock, finished up, threw my tools in the boot and shut it. Realised I had the Fenlander keys in my hand, not the Tourer. And my house keys were on there. And I'd locked the front door.

Cock.

Climbed in through an open window and found a coat hanger. Had to exit from the window too as my missus had the spare keys in her bag...

Got in after much sweating and swearing.

I was doing the opposite today though. I locked the house door behind me when I went out, and I only unlocked the boot rather than the whole car, which I don't normally do.

It was lucky I'd left the house window open, or I'd have been screwed!

Went to do the engine mount today.

Slight problem - the mount screws into a captive bolt, but with the rubber snapped, there is nothing to grab and turn it with. It is too wide for mole grips. (Thanks to Doctor Jnr for the photos)

Any thoughts? I'm not going to attempt it this weekend, it's been like that for long enough already. It won't go anywhere unless I try any dukes of hazzard stuff.

Done it!

I used an old screwdriver as a chisel and whacked the fuck out of it. It came off after some persuasion. Then used mole grips to get the rest of it apart.

The hard part was getting everything to line up again, but that was sorted by jamming a jack down the back of the engine and winding everything forward a bit.

Tada!

Old one had definitely seen better days, and now I have more peace of mind on my long journey next week.
