HFM small autos - Cookie's adventures in shiteing

What a dilemma.

Took the Astra off sale, as I've spent 400 quid on her this month (4 new boots, MAF, Lamda sensor). Figured I needed to get my moneys worth for some top down summer motoring.

But then this popped up on Autotrader.

343426086_Screenshot_20210324-224507_AutoTrader.thumb.jpg.25d5b74ce50b33ca0afa2590b1628a12.jpg

110k on clock. One of the cleanest MOT histories I've ever seen. Unless its borked, its a cheap price for an R75 with all the toys.

Yes, I've already got an R75, but two would be better :)

So I will be phoning the dealer in the morning to find out if they still have it and whether its belts have been done in last 6 years.

If I get a yes to both questions, I'm going to be hard pressed not to bung a deposit down.

So Astra may be roffled. I did promise to give first refusal to a fellow member of this parish. If he does not want it, roffle it is.

Rest of the fleet.

Suzi the suzuki has a clanking exhaust, so she will be going to garage for a check up. While there (hopefully next week), she will also get oil change, fuel filter and thermostat. Then I find out if the mayo is due to short journeys or OMGHGF.

Audrey has been at garage for nearly 3 weeks. Not had an update since two Mondays ago. Will be chasing them up tomorrow.

I wouldn't.

75s are lovely but as you will find out when you get yours back, they are needy, foutery bastards. If you have one and a more straightforward car as a backup then you can just roll with the punches but have 2 and you'll quickly hate them.

Coming from someone who once had a tired 75 and a Clio 172 as a back up........

Totally understand. Had many ZS180's that were horrifically needy, so I'm well aware of what I may be letting myself in for.

But, they wouldn't be doing huge miles, as Suzi will be main daily, if I can get her sorted. Plus Dad is a confirmed R75 licker and I might lend one to him, to put a smile on his face.

Oh and I'm clearly mental :)

None of my 75s has been any needier than any other car I've owned.  Apart from the one that had HGF, but I bought it knowing it had HGF and it was priced accordingly.  The intermittent fault with my current 75's BCM is only the second real issue it's had in 2 1/2 years of ownership (the first being the passenger front door microswitch getting stuck in sub-zero temperatures), which really isn't bad going for a £500ish car.  It's never FTP'd and only ever had minor MOT fails (went straight through this year).  And it has over 180K on the clock so it's not like it's been mollycoddled.

How to be visible.

1. Wear high vis jacket

2. Drive a bright ginger disastra

3. Experience a failed alarm sounder, while in the Centre of Bath's rush hour traffic.

4. Drive 10 miles home, through local school traffic, while alarm sounder is still giving it the beans.

5. Drive to garage and wait 20 mins for them to open, where everyone on Industrial Estate can hear you, due to aforementioned failed alarm sounder.

6. Get alarm sounder ripped out.

7. Drive home, in high vis jacket, bright ginger disaatra, with alarm sounder, sounding away merrily in the passenger seat.

8. Possibly* put alarm sounder in hedge of annoying neighbour at end of street.

9. Half hour later, wander down the street, nonchalantly without grinning, to enquire what all the bloody noise is :)

Suzi is back from garage. Oil change and working thermostat.

They forgot the fuel filter and rattly exhaust, but were a man down due to a mechanic being sent home after an argument. My little jobs can wait.

As for Audrey, confirmation from a local shiteist, that she definitely has wobbly front discs.

On the plus side, also strong suspicion she has been previously remapped :)

So about a week after purchasing Suzi, I noticed something missing.

20210331_193419.thumb.jpg.7a5c602cb49d061281210304c7fe8ae8.jpg

Yep. Front interior light is missing.

So I hit ebay and purchased the missing cover, from an Agila.

Saturday, I went to Halfrauds and looked up the bulb I needed on their amazing* brilliant* accurate* computer system. The computer said I needed this

20210331_193430.thumb.jpg.f80ed0a87594ec6eebffe91b17ec089a.jpg

Back to car to fit bulb.

20210331_193530.thumb.jpg.2b1e2e2c18350aed0e566d510f33ca05.jpg

Which shockingly, given Halfrauds amazing* reputation does not fit. Its a bit short.

Hit Amazon and ordered some that were bigger. Took a bit of a flier, as wasn't sure of the correct size.

These turned up today. Bought a pack of 6 LEDs.

20210331_193644.thumb.jpg.74f9cf70667788f6729a8902fb984fbd.jpg

And it fits.

In a fit of enthusiasm I turned my attention to the rear light, which was working, but I had 5 spare LEDs so why not.

20210331_194151.thumb.jpg.bfbabbd22c0d4b9f996de8f639b663bf.jpg

New LED in place and also works.

Then I remembered that @andyberg had told me my nearside sidelight was out.

20210331_194312.thumb.jpg.a172b02210d075e79b5aafb2dc4116fa.jpg

Given I was in a fixing mood, thought I'd better do that too.

New bulb in and tested before sticking it back in holder.

Crash bang wallop

Sat outside screwfix, eating lunch.

Parked behind Transit.

Which then reverses into front of Suzi.

He stops. Obviously, cause Suzi is now firmly pressed against his backside. Puts his hazards on.

I start trying to find my phone, so details can be exchanged.

He then fucks off at speed.

Joy

Bumper damaged, but still attached. Need new number plate.

Got his number plate. So if I see him around, something good* will happen to his van.

No cctv, no witnesses. Such is life.

Contact the police, he has left the scene of an accident without giving details. By law you must do that, especially as you have his number plate, and his van will have marks. Was the van signwritten? I bet he thought no one was in the car...

No witnesses. No cctv. My word against his.

Did see the van as I was leaving Westfield Ind Estate.

Gave chase.

Suzi can't keep up with a Transit lol

Lost sight nr Chilcompton, when I got stuck in roadworks.

Contact the police immediately,  you'll need a crime ref number at the very least for insurance purposes.

If I claim, Suzi will be written off.

Given how many car insurance policies I have, not worth the extra premiums on 4 policies that will get loaded, even for a non fault claim.

He must be local (ish). I'm sure our paths will cross at some point.

And what would you do? I'd still report it to the police even if you aren't claiming.

This.

At least get him charged with something mate. It may be your word against his but he will have damage to his van.

I bought a load of those in LED flavour to replace the filament ones on my boat cabin lights. Fitted them all and only half of them worked thus proving that a fifty percent chance of fitting them the right way around was statistically correct.
