Curious, mine has a different radio to yours. Mine's a pull-out Clarion. 

Does yours have power steering or electric windows? They were optional. 

Slightly envious of how tidy yours is, mine's a little more rough and ready.

Great review video. Reminded me of a former colleague who lived in a flat in Edinburgh. He would take a single bucket of soapy water down to wash the car then drive around the corner to the petrol station and pay for the cheapest jet wash token to rinse the suds off. Claimed it was the only way to get the job done properly without spending a fortune or lugging ten gallons of water out from the flat. That was nearly 30 years ago now right enough and ironically many local petrol stations that once housed a jet wash are  long closed and now home to a £5 hand car wash emporium.

Monday 20/07/2020

I had a brainwave - there's still one more job I am willing to do before it goes for the major work. A service. So the assistance of @davehedgehog31 of this parish was enlisted because he has a square drive oil plug key handy and loads of spare oil. I wanted to do an oil change, run it for a few hundred miles then change the oil again.

Nothing major. The oil filter was a bit tight, the drain plug was a bit tight but other than that, tasks went fine.

The air filter was pretty ropey too so I slung the spare one at it

More assistance from Hedgehog Motors today with @davehedgehog31 getting final prep done on the 205 before a move from Cumbernauld to Ayrshire for the heavy work to be done for MoT.

Afterwards a fish supper was had while Mr Hedgehog had a half pizza supper. 2 cans of juice and 2 tubs of ice cream came to £10.60 thanks to the government eat out half price thing. GOVERNMENT SUBSIDISED CHIPS!!!

After that we retired to Greenfaulds station car park for a mini Scotoshite featuring @rml2345, @320touring, @jaypee, @Split_Pin and @blackboilersuit.

Anyways drop off tomorrow morning, work commences on the 17th.

205 dropped off in Maybole today. Work may commence at the weekend but definitely by Monday so should hopefully see it back by Friday next week. Didn't get any pics of the drop off but have these. A straps check on the A77 and some scenic* shots at Whitelee wind farm

Where were we?

Ah yes. The 205 was dropped off on Tuesday 11th August with work expected to commence on Monday 17th by @dome's mate Craig. For anyone interested, the fuel consumption of the V70 on the trip from Shell Fullarton -> Stirling to collect trailer -> Cumbernauld to pickup car -> East Kilbride overnight -> Maybole to drop off car -> Stirling to return trailer and back to Shell Fullarton was 24.1mpg (42.94L over 228miles). A minor set back was had when Craig's own car failed an MoT so work had to be done on that which meant work on the 205 started in ernest on Thursday 20th.

A rake of parts were supplied by myself and left in the boot. Namely front brake pads, discs, calipers, bearings and driveshafts. Rear brake shoes, drums, springs etc. ARB droplinks and various miscelaneous bits and bobs were in there too.

Day 1

Ramp time was not unlimited so the front end was tackled first. I mentioned the brakes on the front were almost brand new 15 years ago and virtually never used so if they were saveable then just use them. Ehhh... no.

This was the reason I done so little myself. The front bearings needed doing which is a strut off, press out job which necessitates taking all the other gubbed stuff off anyways.

While waiting for gearbox driveshaft seals and gearbox oil arrival, the brake fluid was examined seeing as ALL of the brake components are being replaced including the master cylinder. I mentioned at the drop off it may be a bit... iffy. Once the res is off, time to attack the pipe unions.

The man from the motor factor showed up with new shaft seals and oil so time to get those done. Apparently the oil that came out the gearbox was clean but not a lot did come out.

Next up is the driveshafts. Problem #1. The passenger side one doesn't want to go in. It appears to be hitting something before even the splines get a chance to engage. Taking it back out, it looks the same on the old one however after actually measuring it, the plain shaft part on the new one is "a bawhair" bigger than the old one. A bawhair being a technical unit of measurement approximately the size of a Canadian Blonde One.

That ends play on Day 1. Potential for major headaches with the driveshafts it is then. Joys*

 

Day 2

So I'm back at work today which is less than ideal for communications. However a quick text exchange while I was in Largs saw Craig say he would phone the manufacturer of the drive shafts to see what the score is. To absolutely noone's surprise, the technical team are working from home and for some reason there's a difference in support depending whether you purchased  from their own website or an their ebay listings. Craig sets about having another look. The new shaft catches on the plain bit of shaft whereas the old one just slides in but there is a tiny amount of play. I suggest that maybe there's a burr on the end of the bit of the new shaft causing it to hitch up on whatever bearing is in the box and Craig confirms this with measurements suggesting it's slightly flared at the outer end. Local motor factors were contacted and parts could be obtained if need be.

Upon further inspection it's noticed that the old shaft appears to have had some persuation at some point in it's life to get it in to the box.

And with this in mind, Craig decides to dress the end of the new shaft very lightly with a flap disc on a grinder which appeared to do the trick.

Next job is the reassemble the struts. Just thinking about this looking at the size of the new spring gives me The Fear™ of the dreaded spring compressors...

That's a quality set of compressors though. During the dismantling, it was suggested the dampers were not in their first flush of youth however decent priced parts were not available quickly so we took the executive decision to use the old ones for now. However once the struts were stripped, examined and cleaned, it turned out they actually look OK.

Next problem. The new drop links are longer than the old ones.

"I'll make them fit" says Craig but I offered up that surely if they are both the same size, they will fit but the ARB will just sit lower than with the shorter ones? Seems that was the case and the wheels don't come in to contact. Problem averted.

Now that everything is off, cleaned and some bits lightly modified, the build up on the front can commence. Apparently the driver side drive shaft went in without issue too.

End of day 2. I think that is all. Next is the back brakes, all of them and the timing belt and water pump.

Days 3 and 4 and maybe some of 5

Greetings peeps. I've not been doing updates 'cos I've been on the backshift and suffering 4 days of vicous migraines but we're over that so let's continue.

Day 3 is getting stuck in to the back brakes. All of them - shoes, drums, cylinders and pipes. I had already done the drum, shoes and springs on the driver side so the pax side was the first target. Oh dear.

I had also made mention that the handbrake was being an cunt when I was reassembling things so that was investigated. A burst handbrake cable was at fault.

As expected the hard line from the rear flexis to the cylinders definitely needed done but what was more worrying was the flexi to master sections needed doing too.

They were really crusty and the went around various things. Apparently there wasn't even a hex on the flexi union left they were so corroded. To get to them, the fuel tank had to be removed...

...and to get to the fuel tank the exhaust had to come off.

Once that was done it was pretty much plain sailing.

Day 4 was mainly for buttoning up the rear brakes / fuel tank / exhaust etc and the timing belt and water pump. Seems the crank seal may be on it's way out but it doesn't seem too bad just now. Photos getting thinner 'cos there's not really much to document.

Finally, day 5 is set aside for final buttoning up of everything and sling it in for a test. Gearbox oil topped up too.
