Right with the spot lights in place, next task is the coolant and the second oil change. I always change thermostats on older cars as a matter of course but also the mechanic said it was a bit rusty in there when he done the water pump. The oil change done just before going to get MoT work done about 8 weeks ago was intended purely as a flush.

Oil change first with a new filter was uneventful so no pics. On to the coolant a few days later...

Remarkably I managed to catch most of it... BROON!!!

So with the rusty brown coolant (with chemical flush in there too) drained it was time to take the thermostat out, leave everything loose and connect it to the tap to flush it out...

30 minutes later...

I managed to get a bit more flow through the heater core as well as it was a bit blocked. Previously the heater would be warm when I just turned the fan on then cool straight away indicating no flow so I rectified that my removing the heater hoses and connected them to the tap.

On the drive home, the heater was... ok. Not great but considerably better than it was until it started going really shite again. Must have dislodged some crap and blocked again. I also noticed with the new thermostat the gauge was sitting lower than previously so that must be duff too.

Next morning I went a hurl to try and find a new stat without having to get one online. Why can I smell antifreeze???

 

 

 

 

 

So aye leaky pipes. New heater core was promptly ordered for £30 as they are quite common. Once I got the old heater out I managed to blag some leccy off the neighbours to do a cleanup...

I also decided to do something about the shit crackly sound from the front speakers...

Replacement speakers ordered in the fashion of a pair of 13cm Alpine co-axials. Still not arrived in the post.

And I also made a more complete job of the door check rather than having JUST a bolt through the holes...

Now that the new heater is in, time to go do the coolant AGAIN seeing as it's mostly just water in there...

I wasn't as successful catching it all this time but a comparison of the colours of coolant that came out (the second lot) vs what it should be...

Refilled, another new stat too. Quick drive - heater is roasty toasty now but the temp gauge is still lower than it was with the stat the car came with so suspect either a duff sender or the new stats are cooler than the one that was in there. The one I got the car with is definitely not the original as the housing has clearly been apart at some point. Anyways will monitor and report back.

New coolant with new heater would melt the face aff ye

Finished work about 9, went home via the Chinese, got some scoff then headed down to the shitey speaker arrangement. To recap...

A quick test...

Afterwards took the car a hurl for about an hour with tapes and my MP3 player through an FM transmitter. Result: IS GOOD!!!

Well as per usual, Scotland is behind England for anything to do with Covid lockdowns whether it be tightening or easing of restrictions. Scotland was due to lift it's national non essential travel ban on 26th April but it was brought forward to today with only 3 days notice.

Time to go play...

XUDs don't seem to bother if they have glowplugs or not. 

When I got my DTurbo, it always started just by cranking - it was the first diesel I'd had where the glowplug light actually mattered, and I'd forgotten this as I wasn't used to it, and besides, it always started on the key like a petrol. 

It was only a couple months later when I replaced the plugs and cleaned the relay out, that the glowplug light came on for the first time in my ownership. Then I realised I'd been doing something wrong. 

Beautiful clattery bastard, wouldn't mind another.

Discussions were had recently with Mr @davehedgehog31about fuel economy now that he's smoking about in a diesel C1 so we decided we should do a comparo economy run. We'd brim the tanks at a petrol station, do a reasonable drive, then brim then again at the same petrol station. Just one car at a time though rather than going in convoy.

So this is that...

Starting point, Shell Fullarton. Since it's just off the motorway.

Route to be taken would be on to the M74, M73, M8, M9, Queensferry Crossing, M90, A9, M9, M80, M73, M74 and back to the same petrol shop.

Results:
Distance from fill up to fill up: 136 Miles
Economy: 63.3mpg

Good result, could be higher owing to:
Fuel leak at the injection pump
Stopping for scran
Not that far a drive so any dips in economy (eg uphill starts
) will drag the average down a lot more

It's going in next week to a diesel workshop to have the pump fettled. All it may need it throttle shaft seals but I suspect after 29 years, all the seals inside may need doing.

C1 economy run on same route to follow at a later date.

Oh aye I almost forgot. I put the 205 on my work car park pass and took the V70 off. Said car park has the tiniest spaces IN THE UNIVERSE and the V70 was just asking to get bashed.

Nice to have an ideally suited vehicle for it these days.

The 205's been leaking diesel out the injection pump from where the throttle shaft goes in the top of the pump.

It'll be a couple of o-rings says I, maybe a gasket. Kits available for like 10 quid but I'll stick it in somewhere to have a bit of a going over. Off to Argyle Diesel in East Kilbride I go.

"It's leaking fuel out the throttle shaft but have poke about see if there's anything else it needs"

*PHONE*
"Throttle shaft is worn. Needs a new one but if we do that then the whole pump has to come off so we can recalibrate it against the governor and test it and while it's out it might as well just get a full seal kit. Oh and it might need bearings but probably not."

In for a penny etc...
