Agreed.

I have a soft spot for the P38, although I don't have the time / ingenuity to keep one on the road like you do so I'll stick to my Classic for the mo 😉

Ha it has tested my sense of humour sometimes, but the smiles outweigh the frowns in most cases.. 😁

I'd love a RRC but i'd only be able to have one or the other,  so it seems i'll be sticking to the P38 for now ;)

On the 19th "me barfday" I was surprised  with a set of these!

l6bBOp5l.jpg

I should note my old front plate flew off into a hedgerow on the A49 some weeks ago, and my old man decided to make some "custom" ones to surprise me!

And they sure are unique!!😝

And yes she does leave little black dots everywhere she parks!!! ;)

l6bBOp5l.jpg

Fitted.

I'll get a better shot of the front plate later!

Unique little touches like this make a car your own!

More maintenance for the old Bus this time in the shape of an Oil change..

in minus 6 degree weather!

My pecker has officially fucked right off, I hope to see it middle of next week! ;)

Maybe...

Anyway

The last service was 4000mi ago and I foolishly used an expensive 10w60 Castrol stuff, which caused a top end rattle when hot..

This time i'm going down the semi syn 10w40 route and changing it more frequently

The Oil of choice!

GIPAsdMl.jpg

draining the old stuff couldn't be simpler, I put the EAS on extended mode and just crawl underneath with a 16mm wrench.

ID3UiZgl.jpg

If you're anything like me you'll misplace this plug and spend 1/2 the day looking for it!! ;):)

in my case I had left it on the front just by the rad and it fell orf!

Luckily it landed on my wooden board i use to crawl on!

Old filter off,

W2Jj37Wl.jpg

And in this pic you'll note the patented "LR RUST PROTECTION" or more simply an oil seal leak.. ;)

xemrEpwl.jpg

There is nothing better in life than parking your old Range Rover on your mates brand new concrete driveway! ;) lol

New filter primed.

OscUCN1l.jpg

And spun on.

SpMX6Otl.jpg

Oil plug back in.

dZWFsHsl.jpg

New oil in and on my trip to work I did note the engine sounded better, with the 10w60 Edge it had a slight top end rattle even when hot, which I didn't like..

With the new 10w40 it is back to being near silent! ;)

Very happy with that, a right result..

well worth the freezing.. ;)

A few days ago I removed the upper windscreen trim to check the bond between the screen and the car, unfortunately I lost what little patience I had at the time and might of broke all but 1 of the original clips..

I did managed to get it loosely back on but it looked horrible and flapped around like sluts fanny.

as you can see here it is quite loose! ;)

LZc4ZcTl.jpg

New clips were either £9.99 for 10 or £3.99 each at an OE supplier, as you can imagine I went for the cheaper option which so happened to be a chap on ebay..

The trim just slides off.

MmDAUW5l.jpg

New clips just slide on..

Yhj7PdNl.jpg?1

The old trim piece stuck back on, just resting the trim on the clips and pushing down was good enough to get a nice click ;)

Its the little things ;)

In light of the reputation the P38 has what has to be considered is the neglect she received from the previous owner, when taken in to account she hasn't been too bad...

Labour has just been my time, and the overall parts cost is around £1100 which isn't too bad!

If I had an independent do the work the overall parts/labour cost would probably be near £5000 or more!

I've seen a good few cars online that claim to have obscene amounts of money spent to bring them around, one particular example had around £30,000 spent on parts which was ridiculous..

Instead of rebuilding the components it had straight replacements which did make me laugh! 😁

Thats one thing to remember on the P38 almost all of the car is rebuildable the big mistake often made is people just replacing everything and crossing fingers! ;)

Also to be considered is the uniqueness of the P38, it isn't necessarily more complex than other cars, it is just different and that has to be taken in to account when thinking about getting one, don't consider it more complex, just different! ;)

Why am I writing this?

Well the P38 has received a fair bit of stick over the years for being the most unreliable RR ever made usually it is RRC or weirdly L322 owners that say one  needs specialist knowledge to even go anywhere near one with a spanner, this simply isn't the case, it's just a car that has to be understood before ripping into it!

The L322 and beyond while they are good cars to drive - Rust - Electrical - Engine - Gearbox - are rife.

RRC's are the pinnacle being the original unit!

I would love one but they're out of my price range now! ;)

The P38 is also almost always forgotten I notice websites and magazines alike go from the Classic straight to the L322 without a hint of the P38! it is a shame..

But when you think about it the P38 is the only Range Rover to share RRC componentry.

Recently however the P38 seems to have got a small spotlight shone on it with prices for the good ones seeming to creep up

The L322 price crash seems to be pushing the P38 skyward!

Anyway..

Rant over! LOL

Always thought that was the L322.

The P38 is probably my favorite RR and this topic made me finally pick a favorite color, your example looks beautiful, one of the first topics i followed when i joined AS

Just a minor question. Is the rear badging in the lower tailgate (LR logo and VOGUE V8) supposed to be that far up? Most P38's I see have it a bit lower, like this

Thanks mate!

Appreciated she is a labour of love and looks ok at 10 paces lol ;)

Regarding the badging on P38's the Chrome Vogue Badge or Vogue SE Gel badge  is usually located adjacent to the tailgate button, however models fitted with light guards usually have the Vogue/se badges lower down due to the bracketry taking up valuable space! ;)

models like these below tend to have them below the button also I note all the older models have them below the tailgate button!

4.6 HSE

2.5 DHSE

4.0

! ;)  :)

Example.

Vs mine.

X8PgwDbl.jpg

Placement of the LR badge on the other side is another point of contention people tend to all have an opinion of where it is in the "right" place mine is quite high up much like the other Vogue above! ;)

To be fair I've never seen a P38 with the badges in the same place, the one below has it in the centre 🤪

RE: Shed of the Week: Range Rover (P38) - Page 1 - General Gassing - PistonHeads UK

This other Vogue has it in the same place as mine.

Range Rover Vogue 4.6l V8 (P38) | RS Motor Trading Company

Weird eh!!!

If I recall correctly they were placed on by fellow humans, so they'll never all be in the same place 😝

The "V8" badge on mine is an add on from Ebay not factory! ;)

HTH! ;)

Cheers mate!

The reason why i thought the LR badge was in an odd place might have been mostly because almost all P38's here are 2.5 DSE's and I don't think i've ever seen any made after 1998 on the road. This was roughly the time when 4x4's started to be fully taxed here

All the progress in your car makes me want to go into LR ownership one day but it would have to be something diseasel powered as petrol here is over 1,5€/ltr.

Who knows what will come next after i finish the Aldi though

To be fair P38's are a very rare sight here too and the majority that I see are diesels, only 167k were made between 1994 and 2001 that's worldwide so they were rare to start with to be fair!!

Petrol over here when I bought her in 2017 was £1.40 per litre which is roughly 1.6€/ltr which is a drain on the old wallet!

Luckily she has a Multipoint LPG system which cuts costs in half at around 55ppl which is 0.62€ which is easier to manage!

Don't know if you have LPG around your area? it defo helps.

On Petrol mine will do 22mpg if i'm nice to it, and that drops off to mid teens if i'm hooning and even single figures if really pressing on!!! ;)

On LPG it averages around 16mpg but is half the cost sometimes more than petrol so equiv of late 30s to the gallon! range is around 245mi  from a 84ltr LPG tank which has 75ltr useable capacity which is around 16mpg however if I'm pushing her it can drop to 185 miles  11 mpg  and if i'm in full general lee mode that can drop down to 8mpg!

The upside to the diesels is they'll almost always be above 20 to the gallon ;)

They're lovely things to drive, I can't think of anything to replace it to be fair!! ;)

must admit the one thing thats been bugging me...

How TF did you manage to insure it at 17??????????????

PMSL

It was £1100 per year when I bought it, the same year Saxo was around £300 more per year!!

A golf MK4 2.0 TDI auto was £2300 ;)

At the age I am now 20 it is £400 per year with no claims and all that jazz the company I use is Elephant insurance which is a part of Admiral IIRC they gave and still do give a good deal!

To be fair i'm surprised at the price..

In my mind it must be something to do with it being a 2.2ton 4x4 which you're much less likely to hoon compared to a hatchback!!

The incredible theft protection is another, it can stop itself being started with its own key ;) very hard to steal ;)

I could leave it in Liverpool city centre with the windows down and the keys in it, and so long as I let the EKA code roll over too many times it won't start ;)

So it would stay there, unless they trailered it away! ;)

We do have LPG here, basically the only way of being able to run things like T5 Volvos economically. A litre of LPG is like less than half of a litre of diesel!

(And that's another thing that makes me want to try a pez powered car as I've only had diesels to this day!)

I might still have portuguese off road magazines from when P38s and D1s were new. That probably influenced me a lot in liking P38s so much

(Also, i had no clue such a thing as a 2.5 DHSE existed)

Yep it was released in late 1999 as a top spec Diesel as originally all you could get as a diesel owner was the DT and DSE which unless it was spec'd to the hilt with things off the options list you got quite a spartan motor..

It had everything standard that the 4.6 HSE would have which would of included

Heated seats

Premium sound system Harman Kardon

Electric seats

Sunroof

Dual zone climate control

18" wheels

cruise control

etc

If I was looking for a diesel the DHSE would be on the top of my list but a wise P38 owner once said, condition is more important than spec ;) ;)

What amazed me though, is when new even a completely basic 1995  DT with cloth and no Air-con would retail at £37,995 new which is £78,630 🤪

Amazing what was considered luxury 25+years ago compared to today!!

If you offered a RR with no Aircon/sunroof and cloth seats for £78k they'd throw the book at you! ;)

In fact, here we only had the DT for the 1st year. The importer misjudged the market badly, P38 diesels sold really well and they immediately brought the DSE, then in 1998 sales fell off a cliff for tax reasons.

But even our DTs have the digital climate control

Thats interesting, and slightly depressing that you all got cut short because of TAX!!!

You could spec the P38 to the hilt even the DT like you say could have digital HEVAC

Actually I was wrong, it was in 2001.

4x4's used to pay 20% of the new car tax you'd get on a standard passenger car. This made japanese off-roaders and LR's very attractive to buy, and therefore popular.

In 2001, the government increased it to 100%, causing price increases of up to 20.000€. Off-roader sales completely fell off a cliff. A lot of people couldn't afford the RR anymore, and those who bought the japanese ones switched to the (still lightly taxed) pickups.

I sold my Last RR Classic, a softdash 300Tdi Vogue SE for £3250..At the time I thought I'd made out like a Bandit....

15 years later and for a Tidy one you can stick another zero on the end...

Story of owning it..

Brought a Zafira diesel for £3000 (4 years old)..8 months later wanted back into 4x4 ownreship, so swapped zaffy for a 1986 Land rover 110 Station wagon with the 2.5 J19 turbo engine (dog slow..)6 months after, guy on 4X4 site i used wanted a 110 to Tdi...so deal was struck where I swapped the 1986 110 for a 1995 RR Classic Softdash 300Tdi

Roughly 9 months later air suspension died, and a guy from Sheffield who already owned a RR LSE fitted with a TVR 5.0 litre, offered me the £3250..and He collected too..

Incidently towing it back to Sheffield he burned through 1 Full LPG Tank (approx 75litres) AND full tank of Tesco's Finest Dino juice LOL..IIRC less than 5mpg at 70+Mpg in LSE with a hooooge Ifor williams trailer With my old RR on that !!!!

as of last year he still owned my old one, and was rebuilding the LSE

I wouldn't mind a a softdash but they're way out of my price range, being the preferred classic, the best interior fitted to the RRC was the softdash..

The prices of these RRC are amazing my dad recalls how years ago you could hardly give them away especially the old 2dr!

Now they fetch insane money! 🤪

My P38 burnt through 75litres in 110mls towing a trailer with a mk2 shogun on it 🤣

without any extra load she goes though 75litres of LP in 230mi which isn't that bad! ;)

Window "seal" more so a wind deflector thingy..

It has been flopping down when I open the door for a good while, I had some spare time and some superglue to sort it out ;)

GEZr4I3l.jpg

It is glued to the car and not held on over a seam much like a normal door seal.. ;)

bamkM3ol.jpg

A good dose of this stuff helped to keep it in the right place. ;)

kZKrYZRl.jpg

Being that I didn't/don't have the patience to stand there to hold it while the glue cured, I employed some old tissue I had lying around.

0NNMSmAl.jpg

And done...

2A3dSqAl.jpg

yzYWcHTl.jpg

It doesn't look that different from the before, however it is now held fast and won't sag ;)

Good stuff supergloo - smells good too. 😬🤣👌

Update time.

The old P38 has an issue was water finding its way into the cabin and wetting the corners of the headliner..

Sunroof has done this before around a year ago, and some silicone under the seal cured it.

This is what greeted me when I peeled off the seal.

AwJDUG7l.jpg

EfcDYoel.jpg

Turns out the entire rear part of the frame is separated from the glass. 😅 so that isn't going to work the absolute fiddle fuck/

Some silicone to the rescue..

oAxM53Bl.jpg

The seal was then banged on and taped while the sillycone set..

EPfSkbFl.jpg

The sunroof looks oddly like the unit fitted to the Rover 800. 🤔

A name change has taken place, from this day forth she shall be known as "silicone Sally" ;):)

  • Cooper1 changed the title to Project "p38" Diary of a 2001 Range Rover - AKA Silicone Sally
  • 3 weeks later...

After a few weeks of monsoon type weather the roof is dry as a bone.

Well happy with that.. ;)

Next little upgrade is the headlights I've never replaced the bulbs and recently i've noticed issues.

The primary issue is the O/S bulb seems to be moving in the housing, every time she hits a pothole the light will jiggle. 🤪

So a few quid later I have these..

xPeJJtel.jpg

They have quite good reviews especially among P38 owners, so I gave them a try..

The N/S bulb on the P38 takes literally 30secs to change

paWv2USl.jpg

The O/S however was a different story mostly down to the fact the battery limits the access, and a fair amount of dexterity is required to get the bulb in and re attach the spring clip..

The space!

QDOkFi7l.jpg

Once I removed the rubber boot I discovered the old bulb had been held in with Blu-tak 🤔

The reason for this was the tang which the spring clip clips in to had been bent out of shape, either by a lack of patience or access... :(

Arrows on this pic show the issue.

Green arrow repesents where the mangled tang is, and the other arrow shows where the tang should be!!

GvyFDEzl.jpg

Luckily I have some long picks and screwdrivers, so carefully it was bent back in to shape and the bulb refitted... :)

The spring clip was left in the rubber boot ;)

Some silicone grease applied around the lip and it slipped back on 🤗 😏

t7aX8sol.jpg

And a parting pic of her offroading ;)

climbing Curbs is the closest thing most RR's get going offroad ;)

yRsclxYl.jpg

MOT is due on the 9th of next month so an inspection was in order..

Looking underneath i'm amazed these parts were new after 5'ish months on the car, amazing what salt does!!

AB750cnl.jpg

6eQhU3ll.jpg

Oh and I managed to re'sync my keys so now I have central locking...... ;)

🤑

Next week I'm going to replace the shock absorbers, because numpty "me" put on the TF +2 shocks which are 2in longer than standard and as such will cause the bags to come apart if she cross axles or goes on a 2 post lift.

I've priced up 4x Britpart shocks for £75 which isn't too bad, it'll hopefully improve the ride which is quite stiff with the offroad shocks..

Probably time for an update..

This time in the shape of a suspension upgrade..

As ya'll know the P38 has the rather infamous EAS which has been known to throw quite a few problems towards otherwise unsuspecting owners..

I myself have had my fair share of EAS faults and now that she is dialled in that regard IE most of the parts are new I can turn my attention to the ride comfort, which was the Air suspensions party piece.

Unfortunately when I replaced the knackered OE shocks with Terrafirma the ride went from bad to Spine through skull on even the slightest of potholes.

Also it would hit a pothole or undulation due to the stiffness of the shocks and bounce which was quite disconcerting and it would force me to slow down which was an irritation it felt like the wheels left the ground..

Also if it hit a succession of potholes it was truly horrific

After a few months of living with this I decided recently that enough is enough and I went on the line and ordered some Britpart Shocks/

The choices vary greatly there are BOGE which are OE Monroe - Terrafirma - Bilstein and Koni plus a few others most of which promise a firmer ride, which is something i'm very much against hence the reason I went for Oil not gas Britparts.

and at £75 a set it wasn't too bad price wise.

Removal of the old ones is simple just 2 bolts, here are the old units, still firm and removal is a right ballache as trying to compress them under the car is very difficult

The old units here with barely 1800mi on them!

JGscJKS.jpg

I wouldn't recommend them!

The new oem units which even though they're "BRITPART" the construction and overall finish is better than the OEM BOGE units, I was surprised to see that to be honest..

After fitting them I was expecting to still have a harsh ride, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it completely transformed!

Its gone from juddery speedboat to luxury cruise ship

On my way to work there is a stretch of road which used to play havoc with the suspension it would bounce and crash like you wouldn't believe, it would also be very skittish..

On the same piece of road with the new shocks every little bump is soaked up, and it jellies through the bumps instead of crashing, handling is superb now the shocks are back to how they should be the steering is transformed, the road is a national limit and before I'd struggle to average 40mph now she sits happily at 60+ without giving the faintest complaint..

Very happy..

Yesterday was also her MOT and i'm pleased to report she flew through with only one advisory, that being an "oil leak" standard fit on a P38

Only 5k between MOT's!

Oh and I've not really heard the exhaust from outside with someone else driving, when the tester took her up the road for the tapley meter brake test he gave her some beans, and it sounded incredible very deep bass growl. 😂

  • Cooper1 changed the title to Project "p38" Diary of a 2001 Range Rover

Nothing much to report as she is running quite well at the moment I've been using it occasionally for work and putting some good miles on it

'tis still very good fun to drive

especially since i've been running around in a 1.6 auto civic for a while as I don't really want to pile the miles on the P38.

However to be fair the difference between them means I can't justify using the Civic anymore, its just so bad and as they say life is too short

And the insurance is the same as my P38 and fuel consumption isn't anything to crow about either!

some pics here that I took of her earlier today..

needs a good clean and the wing mirrors repainting!

Almost 4yrs of ownership and its only cost 2 mental breakdowns and a period of me spending my card clean on it a few times but I'd say its worth it?

Hmm..

Also I was looking through my pictures and found the one from very early on in my ownership july 2017 ..

And 3 1/2 years later and several £££ and an arm + leg later the only difference you can see is the funking tree is slightly bigger ;)
