Yeah, the VCU is fine, and passes that test surprisingly well. Surprising in that I expected it to be shagged.

I think it's the output bearing on the BW: gets loud with load and speed.

might be worth a rebuild. ;)

A new morse chain while you're in there ;)

Only downside is dropping the box, it weighs as much as a small planet ;)

Roight ;)

The old MAF in this P38 was as noted above faulting, the cold start idle was all over the place, and it smelt like Neat petrol.

So i pulled the plugs ;)

yp2sQIkl.jpg

Carbon afro anyone?

These were a set of pretty prehistoric Champion Plugs.

Chucked a 2nd hand MAF on it £40 and fitted a new set of plugs.

NGK R ;)

sOmBEt3l.jpg

The burn looks pretty good now ;)

d8iKUy6l.jpg

;)

At this time it also made sense to replace the intake trunking,

bqibakol.jpg

She originally had a single point LPG system on her, which is no good on the V8, it used to Frontfire through the intake and blow the intake trunk and MAF apart ;)

thank goodness I had the sense to stay with hotwire efi classics

yours does look good though ?

Cheers ;)

Admittedly i was much more of a RRC fan than a P38 nut in the beginning, but they're odd vehicles, like scabies once they get under yer skin, they fester, forever! :) ;)

Keeps my idle hands busy on me off days ;)

@Cooper1 I'm so impressed with the level of effort and detail you are.putting into this. Bloody love a p38 me (I've three of the bastards)

Really enjoying all of the updates and the pictures. For old Range Rover lickers like me, this is delightful bedtime reading.

Keep up the good work lad.

Thank you very much CFD ;)

Glad my rambling is of interest ;)

In around february 2018 i was gearing up to take my Dad and Brother to a vintage stem rally in Much Marcle,.

So with her appropriately filthy we set off.

6EJNydHl.jpg

When we arrived at the show, we did the natural at that time of unloading all the tools and note the mess in the back.

When i came back to the car after wandering around the drivers door was "magically" locked ? Being a bit hot temped by this car I gave the handle  a yank. a

whoops!

iAmYDbvl.jpg

Properly borked!

PejncIll.jpg

I did managed to mangle my 6ft+ frame across the passenger seat. when back at home i crawled out the window General Lee style!

Onto ebay, managed to buy a kit, to allow me to have a handle again!

5ODcwIol.jpg

I also bought a "dead" key off of ebay and used a replacment blade to just open the door, if necessary.

Main key on the right, weird one on the left. ;)

JPr4zKIl.jpg

Handle back on and normality restored!

More Engine issues ?

The old V8 had developed a lifter tick, which was rather prominent, naturally i checked the oil and there was some in there. so that was ticked off the list. ;)

The issue lasted for around a week until i got tired of listening to the "tick tick tick tick" so in desperation i lobbed a litre of ATF in the Oil and revved the jangles off it, holding it in 2nd and 3rd right up until redline, and holding it there. ?

At this point i thought it was either going to blow up or fix itself.

Luckily the latter happened and upon returning from my journey she was whisper quiet,

So i drained the oil and instead of using a mineral grade 20w50 halfords shit I used some "quality" oil

yOx5FRvl.jpg

10w40 should flow better at colder temps too ;)

Lobbed some of this in too for good measure

E4eKqA5l.jpg

I'm pretty sure this old girls 4.6 is well worn out but it helps to keep it going.

One foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel comes to mind ;) :)

"crustyness"

Being a Land Rover she did have some rust underneath to tackle, luckily i had some top quality product to deal with it ;)

gLa2POll.jpg

Kurust at work there, don't know if it's any good or not ;)

Then a nice coat Zinc 182 was applied

M0rYHOgl.jpg

vx9L5NEl.jpg

The rear chassis rails which required a touch up Fnarr ;)

ahnd9bpl.jpg

More zinc ;)

s6Wkdmjl.jpg

Then a good coat of waxoyl black, which makes it look pretty, it may or may not do it any good at this point, but it looks good ;)

J6ltuHkl.jpg

More underside werk!

73cTU2jl.jpg

5GUdxR8l.jpg

It needs an overcoat!

I think i'll be paging Buzzweld pretty soon.

Next up was a weird issue, as all P38 seem to be ;)

Note how spotless it is in regards to oil leaks ;)

9WmXurBl.jpg

I pulled the inspection cover off the bottom of the bellhousing, and was greeted with this shit?

VU5EYcUl.jpg

What in the fuck is that?! LOL

C19viZtl.jpg

I did clean the smeg off of the cover and bolt it back up, ;)

PCYK5B7l.jpg

I believe it was a mixture of Tranny fluid and water.. ;)

HOWEVER.

After looking around I found the rear of the rocker covers were leaking and the rubber bung that covers the torque converter bolt access hole was missing, so oil was being funneled into the bellhousing and water from driving etc was getting in there!

GAH!!

Atleast it is a simple issue.

Need to keep an eye on there leaks. H

That looks like a corker of a P38 ;)

Lovely colour, Rioja red ;)

whats her interior like? ;) :)

Thanks. The only interior photos I have are before I cleaned the inside (that's my excuse!). The interiors seem better quality than the later L322's. I was always going to "upgrade" to a supercharged L322 but will keep this (when i get it back!).

The L322's are nice cars, but i find the interior is far superior in the P38, especially the leather ;)

Nice looking machine that is ;)

The only P38 I've driven had 430,000 miles on it, and it was the central locking that was causing the problems for the owner, with random lock-out issues.

Aye the central locking is a plague for one of these ;)

I've had mine "adjusted" with a Nanocom ;)

Love Box Fix ;)

One issue that has plagued a few P38s is the glove box braking away from its hinge and dropping to the floor when opened, mine had this issue and it was both annoying for me and my passengers! ;)

This is how it sits before being fixed ;)

3rsdJwxl.jpg

Annoying and all the shit falls out!

The first port of call is to remove the glove box lid, quite easy in this case, you just have to remove this plastic trim

gYCcC9ql.jpg

There are plastic riv nuts that hold this to the car, hopefully your dash isn't rotting out like mine ;)

oJ7r512l.jpg

Only LR could engineer a piece of steel that rots without being exposed to weather or abrasion.

zm70U1Tl.jpg

there are 4 bolts to remove and the glove box falls out..

The fix for this involved a drill and a Bolt from my Jags gearbox, ;)

kHIxr3ql.jpg

T9U75tKl.jpg

Holes were drilled through the plastic glove box, and the glove box brass "hinge" was tapped to take the bolt, some improvisation was needed because the tap wouldn't fit in the space.

fL64B4el.jpg

Improvising ;)

YlstrpRl.jpg

Ordinarily you wouldn't tap a hole with a high speed drill, but i managed to, and it wasn't cocked to one side, which is odd, maybe thats how i should do an engine block in the future?

nV9QbSQl.jpg

Tapped ;)

The Glove box was bolted back in and the plastic surround loosened off to allow me to get my hand behind to fit the "hinge" ;)

0cPqvgdl.jpg

And fitted,

C3fJjZql.jpg

Luckily it bolted right up! pays to do a good job,,

RUST.

As above my dash cage is rotting out.

zm70U1Tl.jpg

so a nice coat of Kurust was added to slow the rust down,  it was wire brushed before being applied,

nyK88RZl.jpg

And as a top coat a splash of black paint, some standard shit. ;)

zMo5Z6ll.jpg

Finally stick the plastic back on,

gYCcC9ql.jpg

And then admire your victorious fix ;) :)

rHL247il.jpg

Only issue is the pile of crust in the carpet pile! ;)

ZCm8peSl.jpg

the glove box even closes properly!

Inside looks like a right clusterfuk

vRjiKxpl.jpg

AND BREATH!! ;)

Rocker cover(s)

Both my covers were a mismatch of peeling lacquer and corrosion, I did try initally to wire wheel them with a Dremel and then lacquer them but that failed miserably.

You can see them Below, not the prettiest.

PefIm1el.jpg

After some thought swaying back and forth between Red, Silver and Black I went with the stealthy black.

I think it makes em look a tad nicer, more of a factory finish,

1EFI2v6l.jpg

hdU492Il.jpg

Nu94peTl.jpg

svFsonpl.jpg

Much more stealth!

I prefer it that way tBH.

I've seen some where they've been done in red!, not my cup o piss that.. ;)

The paint I used was a Matt effect Simoniz VHT paint.

The old Girl needs a proper Zorst 'innt ;)

A nice Janspeed exhaustage wouldn't go a miss. ;)

Just a short clip of her now, as the neighbours are pissed off with hearing it ;)

PAH!!

Who doesn't like a carbon burning Air pollutin piston clanking heart of a V8 P38 ;)

And a clip of her without any kind of knocking, which is rare.

Alt has started to rumble and whine though!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ;)

 More work!!

Agreed - red rocker covers are naff. There's no way to make the factory grey look good either - I've tried too - and I think black like you've done is the way to go.

Now the alternator's fixed, the dipswitch is playing up on mine. Always something!

An old chap once told me "never fix the last problem" coz another one appears ;)

Range Rover L322 4.4 Content,, ;)

Not mine I might add ;)

This old thing shat itself spectacularly on the M4, apparently. ;)

Being an early 2000s model it had the M62TU V8 with Vanos, the very same unit you would find in a E38 740I

First off you need an engine block, many are available but few are any good, we had already had bought a cheap one and it had bore deformation from steel liners being pressed in the block and we couldn't get the pistons in!!

aWYr6cLl.jpg

Crankshaft and bearings next, usually in a build like this i'd have new bearings to hand however in this instance there was nowt wrong with the old ones so we reused 'em

igX15CTl.jpg

RIbrDrKl.jpg

xsQRwiBl.jpg

2XJLEHul.jpg

Crankshaft was lowered in, heavy old thing.

3IuWEATl.jpg

9xDbsoAl.jpg

QX6rqzSl.jpg

Jx9bDFNl.jpg

3L0plyXl.jpg

whoever the fuck thought reverse torx was a good idea needs a boot up the arse!! they're a pain in the hoop, especially when BM use ones made out of cheese!

Assembly lubricant was used, a product by permatex IIRC.

CYLINDER HEADS NEXT.

Any apprentice or DIY'er will be familiar with this next step, lapping valves!

It is a laborious task especially with these aha suckers!

uOWviXql.jpg

New lapped one on the left. old on the right.

Fk1Rqcol.jpg

I'm getting there ;)

eOug4Xwl.jpg

9 out of 32 ain't bad, only taken me 45mins so far! :help:

81q1Gspl.jpg

And breath! one done!

v01h2vbl.jpg

what a ballsache!

next issues is to stick all this shit in there.

T5rY7F5l.jpg

Little fuckers!

z1uyWuAl.jpg

Stick em in the hole, and hope and pray that the next tool doesn't take yer eye out.

TSb26SUl.jpg

MdUsE3Pl.jpg

give them a nice meaty tap,

A70zoXOl.jpg

tUhX5VTl.jpg

And jobs a good un, just make sure you do that 32 times ;)

These next the "tappets" a notorious noise point on the V8 ;)

1zWYXkql.jpg

Best way to test em is to give the little nub inside a squeeze, if it feels about as tought as a used condom it's ferked.

The wear surface doesn't look too bad.

HGHDWjel.jpg

Managed to stick some of them in!

omANTbKl.jpg

And all in.

X3tyZiJl.jpg

lubed up good and proper.

sWVx6F2l.jpg

OuTbyStl.jpg

The inlet cam fitted alone with the Vanos unit.

The Vanos unit itself is an unusual unit that does "magic"

ydZe0esl.jpg

The Oil distribution unit is fitted first onto the engine block, a thick plastic like gasket goes on first.

kr2AHgIl.jpg

You can also spy the timing chain tensioner in the above pic.

Vanos unit fitted, the bolt is LH thread, and is tightened to 110nm.

rvRfYrjl.jpg

This is where i get oil on my hands and the phone stops working so pics become scarse!

The below is an oil distribution plate that was full of shit, this distributes oil onto the cam and without it, this happens.

BZ04QqEl.jpg

Note the scoring!

jWLZ8Nal.jpg

Oh and when this thing went poof.

It took the cam on the NS head with it, a nice chunk!

NiSc5xPl.jpg

Getting the engine in is a faf and a half, what a clusterfuck of shit.

XANYGpLl.jpg

it really is as complex as it looks.

Vanos thingy fitted,

vDD37hPl.jpg

And after around 4hrs of guesswork.........  ;)

QFGpWo6l.jpg

yes they're blue..

don't JUDGE ME!! ;)

Around a week later it had developed a horrible tapping noise, so we took it apart in a carpark.

rfmD9mel.jpg

I1JMfd5l.jpg

It turns out this thing has shit oil pressure, around 1/4 what it should be and its eating the tappets because of it.

Brand new cams and you can just about see the scoring on them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?

GKSB1kOl.jpg

2 dead bastards.

iB4dXjYl.jpg

New ones were fitted,

3rd time lucky..

Bnfo62sl.jpg

We did find the Oil pressure issue was down to a missing oil control O ring in the Oil pump.. ;)

All good now.

Just a condensed version of the horror that unfolded. ;)

rFJ0jpPl.jpg

And a picture of the lumber bus so she dunt feel left out!

Ahh,.

Not really an "update" just an Photo. ? Vogue trim FTW.

P1yLC1nl.jpg

Next up is the door trims, they're bespoke Stainless items, and with a £50,000 car i should hope so ;)

YIZVNMXl.jpg

YlNJKifl.jpg

I ran them over with a bench grinder with a polishing wheel, the lettering is etched on, weirdly.

Once again, great thread update @Cooper1

I was on a collexshun today - which went terribly wrong and so I was looking forward to seeing what updates you might have on here. Looking well, keep up the good work.

Heres one of mine -

Scouting through ebay is a pastime I enjoy very much, a few days ago i managed to snap up a K&N Air filter for the old bus, £13 ;)

The chap had bought it without realising the D2 and P38 airbox is different, bargain.

I already have the K&N cleaner kit, so i soaped it out and re-oiled it..

UPoJuf4l.jpg

Ayy9gNLl.jpg

All nice.

Tbh i'm not really partial to them, but the idea of cleaning them instead of constant replacement does appeal, especially with the work this engine does, gets a paper filter filthy in no time. ;)

While doing the airfilter I noted the paint on the NS rocker wasn't as good as expected, certainly not good enough. ;)

For ease of access I put the bonnet in "service mode" it is amazing to think they knew it would be so problomatic that they'd engineer a bonnet that allows ease of access to pull the lump or do work on it! ;)

O3dorb5l.jpg

Another coat was added.

q0C2Hibl.jpg

The engine itself is getting tidier. ;)

Which is nice ;)
