Cooper1
Roight The old MAF in this P38 was as noted above faulting, the cold start idle was all over the place, and it smelt like Neat petrol. So i pulled the plugs Carbon afro anyone? These were a set of pretty prehistoric Champion Plugs. Chucked a 2nd hand MAF on it £40 and fitted a new set of plugs. NGK R The burn looks pretty good now At this time it also made sense to replace the intake trunking, She originally had a single point LPG system on her, which is no good on the V8, it used to Frontfire through the intake and blow the intake trunk and MAF apart H Broadsword, richardthestag, paulplom and 1 other

Cooper1
In around february 2018 i was gearing up to take my Dad and Brother to a vintage stem rally in Much Marcle,. So with her appropriately filthy we set off. When we arrived at the show, we did the natural at that time of unloading all the tools and note the mess in the back. When i came back to the car after wandering around the drivers door was "magically" locked ? Being a bit hot temped by this car I gave the handle a yank. a whoops! Properly borked! I did managed to mangle my 6ft+ frame across the passenger seat. when back at home i crawled out the window General Lee style! Onto ebay, managed to buy a kit, to allow me to have a handle again! I also bought a "dead" key off of ebay and used a replacment blade to just open the door, if necessary. Main key on the right, weird one on the left. Handle back on and normality restored! Cooper1
More Engine issues ? The old V8 had developed a lifter tick, which was rather prominent, naturally i checked the oil and there was some in there. so that was ticked off the list. The issue lasted for around a week until i got tired of listening to the "tick tick tick tick" so in desperation i lobbed a litre of ATF in the Oil and revved the jangles off it, holding it in 2nd and 3rd right up until redline, and holding it there. ? At this point i thought it was either going to blow up or fix itself. Luckily the latter happened and upon returning from my journey she was whisper quiet, So i drained the oil and instead of using a mineral grade 20w50 halfords shit I used some "quality" oil 10w40 should flow better at colder temps too Lobbed some of this in too for good measure I'm pretty sure this old girls 4.6 is well worn out but it helps to keep it going. Cooper1
"crustyness" Being a Land Rover she did have some rust underneath to tackle, luckily i had some top quality product to deal with it Kurust at work there, don't know if it's any good or not Then a nice coat Zinc 182 was applied The rear chassis rails which required a touch up Fnarr More zinc Then a good coat of waxoyl black, which makes it look pretty, it may or may not do it any good at this point, but it looks good More underside werk! Cooper1
Next up was a weird issue, as all P38 seem to be Note how spotless it is in regards to oil leaks I pulled the inspection cover off the bottom of the bellhousing, and was greeted with this shit? What in the fuck is that?! LOL I did clean the smeg off of the cover and bolt it back up, I believe it was a mixture of Tranny fluid and water.. HOWEVER. After looking around I found the rear of the rocker covers were leaking and the rubber bung that covers the torque converter bolt access hole was missing, so oil was being funneled into the bellhousing and water from driving etc was getting in there! GAH!! Atleast it is a simple issue. Need to keep an eye on there leaks. H Broadsword and Carlosfandango

jon.k
The only P38 I've driven had 430,000 miles on it, and it was the central locking that was causing the problems for the owner, with random lock-out issues. Cooper1
Love Box Fix One issue that has plagued a few P38s is the glove box braking away from its hinge and dropping to the floor when opened, mine had this issue and it was both annoying for me and my passengers! This is how it sits before being fixed Annoying and all the shit falls out! The first port of call is to remove the glove box lid, quite easy in this case, you just have to remove this plastic trim There are plastic riv nuts that hold this to the car, hopefully your dash isn't rotting out like mine Only LR could engineer a piece of steel that rots without being exposed to weather or abrasion. there are 4 bolts to remove and the glove box falls out.. The fix for this involved a drill and a Bolt from my Jags gearbox, Holes were drilled through the plastic glove box, and the glove box brass "hinge" was tapped to take the bolt, some improvisation was needed because the tap wouldn't fit in the space. Improvising Ordinarily you wouldn't tap a hole with a high speed drill, but i managed to, and it wasn't cocked to one side, which is odd, maybe thats how i should do an engine block in the future? Tapped The Glove box was bolted back in and the plastic surround loosened off to allow me to get my hand behind to fit the "hinge" And fitted, Luckily it bolted right up! pays to do a good job,, RUST. As above my dash cage is rotting out. so a nice coat of Kurust was added to slow the rust down, it was wire brushed before being applied, And as a top coat a splash of black paint, some standard shit. Finally stick the plastic back on, And then admire your victorious fix Only issue is the pile of crust in the carpet pile! the glove box even closes properly! Inside looks like a right clusterfuk AND BREATH!! Carlosfandango, DVee8, HarmonicCheeseburger and 1 other
Cooper1
Rocker cover(s) Both my covers were a mismatch of peeling lacquer and corrosion, I did try initally to wire wheel them with a Dremel and then lacquer them but that failed miserably. You can see them Below, not the prettiest. After some thought swaying back and forth between Red, Silver and Black I went with the stealthy black. I think it makes em look a tad nicer, more of a factory finish, Much more stealth! I prefer it that way tBH. I've seen some where they've been done in red!, not my cup o piss that.. The paint I used was a Matt effect Simoniz VHT paint. H HarmonicCheeseburger, Carlosfandango and DeeJay

N Dentressangle
Agreed - red rocker covers are naff. Cooper1
Range Rover L322 4.4 Content,, Not mine I might add This old thing shat itself spectacularly on the M4, apparently. Being an early 2000s model it had the M62TU V8 with Vanos, the very same unit you would find in a E38 740I First off you need an engine block, many are available but few are any good, we had already had bought a cheap one and it had bore deformation from steel liners being pressed in the block and we couldn't get the pistons in!! Crankshaft and bearings next, usually in a build like this i'd have new bearings to hand however in this instance there was nowt wrong with the old ones so we reused 'em Crankshaft was lowered in, heavy old thing. whoever the fuck thought reverse torx was a good idea needs a boot up the arse!! they're a pain in the hoop, especially when BM use ones made out of cheese! Assembly lubricant was used, a product by permatex IIRC. CYLINDER HEADS NEXT. Any apprentice or DIY'er will be familiar with this next step, lapping valves! It is a laborious task especially with these aha suckers! New lapped one on the left. old on the right. I'm getting there 9 out of 32 ain't bad, only taken me 45mins so far! And breath! one done! what a ballsache! next issues is to stick all this shit in there. Little fuckers! Stick em in the hole, and hope and pray that the next tool doesn't take yer eye out. give them a nice meaty tap, And jobs a good un, just make sure you do that 32 times These next the "tappets" a notorious noise point on the V8 Best way to test em is to give the little nub inside a squeeze, if it feels about as tought as a used condom it's ferked. The wear surface doesn't look too bad. Managed to stick some of them in! And all in. lubed up good and proper. The inlet cam fitted alone with the Vanos unit. The Vanos unit itself is an unusual unit that does "magic" The Oil distribution unit is fitted first onto the engine block, a thick plastic like gasket goes on first. You can also spy the timing chain tensioner in the above pic. Vanos unit fitted, the bolt is LH thread, and is tightened to 110nm. This is where i get oil on my hands and the phone stops working so pics become scarse! The below is an oil distribution plate that was full of shit, this distributes oil onto the cam and without it, this happens. Note the scoring! Oh and when this thing went poof. It took the cam on the NS head with it, a nice chunk! Getting the engine in is a faf and a half, what a clusterfuck of shit. it really is as complex as it looks. Vanos thingy fitted, And after around 4hrs of guesswork......... yes they're blue.. don't JUDGE ME!! davehedgehog31, rainagain, Stevebrookman and 2 others
Cooper1
Around a week later it had developed a horrible tapping noise, so we took it apart in a carpark. It turns out this thing has shit oil pressure, around 1/4 what it should be and its eating the tappets because of it. Brand new cams and you can just about see the scoring on them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ? 2 dead bastards. New ones were fitted, 3rd time lucky.. We did find the Oil pressure issue was down to a missing oil control O ring in the Oil pump.. All good now. Just a condensed version of the horror that unfolded. Cooper1
Scouting through ebay is a pastime I enjoy very much, a few days ago i managed to snap up a K&N Air filter for the old bus, £13 The chap had bought it without realising the D2 and P38 airbox is different, bargain. I already have the K&N cleaner kit, so i soaped it out and re-oiled it.. All nice. Tbh i'm not really partial to them, but the idea of cleaning them instead of constant replacement does appeal, especially with the work this engine does, gets a paper filter filthy in no time. While doing the airfilter I noted the paint on the NS rocker wasn't as good as expected, certainly not good enough. For ease of access I put the bonnet in "service mode" it is amazing to think they knew it would be so problomatic that they'd engineer a bonnet that allows ease of access to pull the lump or do work on it! Another coat was added. The engine itself is getting tidier. Which is nice
