That's one of my favourite places to take pics of cars. I grew up 10 miles west of there. Last of the big movers, living a whole 10 miles away from home village. It only took 50 years to move lol.

My brother and sister both said they "escaped" when they left home and went to Aberdeen. Me, I married a local girl and bought a house 3 doors away from the house I was brought up in, then bought that actual house off my mum and dad!

Having moved away from the area (grew up in the villages of Chapol of Garioch, Fisherford and latterly Badenscoth before moving into Aberdeen for a few years when I left my folks place), having now ended up in England...I count the seconds until I can get back.

I live in England.  It's not home though and doesn't feel like it ever really can be...Grampian is home.

When I last drove up in November I damned near started crying when we went past the "Welcome to Scotland" sign - thankfully I was sufficiently preoccupied with wrestling the van in a straight line against a ridiculous crosswind that I didn't have time to worry about such things!

I have a long history of getting photos of my cars at one junction though as it gives a fantastic backdrop.

My late parents house is actually visible there...and folks wonder why city life disagrees with me... that's why!

Fully intend to get both the van and the Jag to that spot.  Hopefully the Invacar one day too, though that's reliant on a larger madder plan happening most likely.

Happily enough the bmw passed its mot today. Advisories for a slight oil leak, all 4 discs, it had both of these last year, and airbag light not working, and inner arch liner insecure. I may go under it with some cable ties which will fix the arch liner, the discs and oil leak will probably still be there next year, and the airbag light may still be not working ever. So the only problems are the fuel gauge not working, and the gearchanges are sometimes a bit jerky, worse when cold. I am thinking about changing the gearbox oil, I cant decide if it's a diy job or to put it to a specialist. I expect it's a "sealed for life" gearbox, with the same oil in it that bmw put in it 21 years and 157000 miles ago. Any opinions if it's worth doing 2 or 3 quick changes myself, or going to a specialist who can pump it out of the torque converter?

Good result on the MOT!

I had a Volvo V70 T5 with auto sealed for life box that went wrong and would hard shift most of the time. After research I changed the ATF myself a couple of times and it improved it enough to keep going for a couple more years. Things I read were, only use the actual ATF specified by the manufacturer (aisin warner transmission) and do not flush as that can free up all sorts of gunge stuck inside the box casing which will then block the galleries with disastrous results!

Today I changed the engine oil and filter, and as much of the gearbox oil I could. The engine oil wasnt bad when it came out, I dont think it has been in there for too long. The gearbox oil though. I think, in fact it has to be the original 1998 and 157000 mile old stuff in there. Reading up on it, there is about 10 litres of the stuff in there. I got out approx 3 and 1/2 litres out, it was blacker than used diesel oil. I then took it on a 40 odd mile run when going for a pint of milk. I will do another change of what I can tomorrow, as it is so easy to do. I drained it out with the drain plug, and pumped the new stuff in with my 12v pump. I used it to take the engine oil out too, couldnt be arsed fighting with rusty fasteners on the undertray. I bought 10 litres of gearbox fluid, so I might just manage to do 3 changes and hopefully then it will have smoother gearchanges when cold. It has always been fine once warm, but can be poor when cold. If I were keeping it I would change the plugs too, but its excess money I dont really have spare.

I've changed box oil on quite a few BMW and Mercs and on the Mercs at least a lot have a converter drain plug. Those that don't you can drain the oil from the box then put the the same quantity of new back in. Next take of the return line from the cooler and run until oil stops coming out. The  new oil goes inro the converter and cooler and expels the old stuff, -very quickly!  Fill back up to level, even the BMW sealed for life boxes have a level, probably a faff to do, and a filter that needs changing inside the box.

I used to have 540i with a 5 speed ZF but can't remember the details of the oil change, though I do remember buying a Wilko weed sprayer to fill the fill the box up!

I just drained it via the plug on the sump and filled it again via the plug on the back of the box as seen on a bmw forum I looked at. I am aware there is a filter inside that can be changed, but I'm not intending on removing the sump to get to it. I am hoping that a couple of changes improves the gearchanges when it's cold.

That sounds like a different box to mine, that had to be filled through the drain for added shit and giggles. ZF 5HP30? The filters are important, I bought a 10 year old Merc 320 CLK which dropped from 5th to 4th randomly on dual carriageways but you could nudge it back up with the tiptronic shiz where it stayed or didn't. I changed the oil and filter and used it for 2 years and 30k miles without any further problems.

I dont know what box it is. The drain hole is on the forward end of the sump, about the middle. The filler is at heb back end on the left side, can hardly get to it for the exhaust. The only way to get the oil in is via a pump and fill it until fluid comes out of the hole. It only changed about 3 litres which will mix with the other 7 or so litres of crap still in there. The plan is to run it about a bit then change again, then do it again. I got 10 litres of fluid, but it wont be completly changed, but hopefully enough changed to make the gearbox behave better. It's easy enough done, just have to get the car up and level to do it, which is a bit of a challenge as my drive is a slight slope. The back on the ramps and the front jacked up on axle stands and it was near enough.

The BMW is still for sale. I also have a 2012 seat leon 1.6tdi with the semi auto dsg box. It doesn't get much use at the moment. It was a category S damaged repaired when I bought it in dec18. Registered to seat uk then one private owner since a couple months old until I bought it. Got a full service history from the same seat main dealer in Dundee to 60 k, it was 63 when I got it. I changed the oil at 65K then got a major service, timing belt and water pump at 70k. In december last year. Now on 72k. It's a good car, but just good, not exceptional if you know what I mean. It's just good at everything, which I suppose that's all one ever needs. It was bought really cheap as the paint was a hit iffy from many years of automatic car washes, it was very swirly and a bit faded, apart from the drivers wing and bumper which were obviously replaced. I dont k kw why it is a cat s at along with the headlight that's all that's been replaced. It must have just been a bump, not a major crash. Its use is for carrying my grandkids about, and a family loan car if any of their cars are not working.

My other car is a 2016 citroen c1 which I use exclusively for work. Work is delivering hot food in the evenings for the local chippy/kebab/pizza takeaway. This is a hard life, all stop start in and out urban use. It was bought from a dealer on finance last june at 3 years and 5000 miles. It's now on 15000, the clutch is right at the top and adjusted as much as possible, I think it will need a clutch soon, but it's not slipping yet. Also at its recent mot the tester, who I have known for years, commented about the clutch and that the front discs and pads are approaching the end of life. The brakes will get hard useage from me, and I know it was an old guy who did the first 5000 miles, quite possible he drove with the foot on the clutch and is responsible for fucking it.

So me being me, and not liking having finance had saved enough to pay off the finance, but instead of that has went and bought another vehicle. It has to be one in, one out and I have zero interest in the BMW so either the seat or citroen has to go. I checked their values on WBAC, and its sweetie money for the BMW,  not much more for the Seat as it's a cat s  but the big surprise is that the value for the c1 is within £500 of what I paid for it last year.  I suppose that is because of the low mileage and it is absolutely unmarked. So it looks like it's going, pay the finance and I will still have some money back. The Leon can do the pizza run, it's cheap enough on fuel, the bmw gets a temporary reprieve and the newcomer, well it's for fun, but will still make a capable kiddie carrier when I have the grandkids. So what is it? Wait and see when a collection takes place probably wednesday.

Well the c1 is gone, to we buy any car. The guy tried to say there was lots of stone chips on 3 different panels and a dent on the wing and the service history is incomplete. I pointed out that the service history is complete, it is due a service in 2 weeks, but that makes it complete as of right now, I had declared the dent on the wing, and minor stone chipping on the bonnet. Admittedly there was a chip in a door that I hadnt spied. So when he put the details he said into his computer it took £450 off the price, which is just about what you expect from them. However once we agreed that the only thing I had not declared was one chip on one door it only took £50 off the original price. I couldnt be arsed arguing about that so off it went, and I am relatively happy.

So a short taxi run later and I arrived at the place where I had to collect the new arrival. The place being a salvage yard, the vehicle being a 2010 toyota hilux invincible that has been in a very minor accident and was about 1/2 the price as it would have been otherwise. It has a minor bump on the front corner, drivers side, and broken foglight. Surfacs scratches on drivers side front and rear door. That's it. It was moted in february and apart from said damage is good condition. It's still showing up as taxed and I put it on my insurance and jumped into it to drive it home. Got about 10 miles from home, applied brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I drove very gingerly to one of my usual garages, I was only 3 miles from it, left it there and got bus home. Garage phoned me today, it had burst a brake pipe which had then been hammered flat. The mot in feb has advisories for brake pipes. The train of thought it the brake pipe burst, and the truck went through a post and spiky wire fence, and the salvage yard hammered the pipe flat to be able to move it about. It then went again with me. So it is getting every brake pipe replaced and I shall pick it up in the next day or two, when photos of said beast will be uploaded.

Here is the said Hilux. The front corner pictured was pushed in and split, a bit of heat and cable ties down the split is fixed enough. The two doors and rear quarter are scratched. Thats all the damage which has made it a cat N write off. It even came with a full tank of fuel. The scratches will not be getting fixed, it will not bother me.

The BMW seems to fix itself. The petrol gauge has never worked since I got it. I went out in it today, after it sitting for two weeks, and the gauge is registering just under 1/2 tank. This would be about correct as it has covered just less than 200 miles since full.
