Things that really do your head in when selling a car

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

On the flip side, dealing with buyers is a pain in the arse sometimes.

I was looking at what would be a classic car for motor tax purposes in Ireland (ie >30 years old, difference between €80p/a and €710 p/a on a 2000cc car). The father was looking at it as a nice option for a second car that's a bit quirky.

They're cheap to import too at that age. He asked me to keep an eye out whilst he back in Ireland looked there.

I'd arranged to look at an old Citroen. Explained to the seller I was looking for a car for the father, was looking to export it. Arranged a date, sent photos and everything. Looked well.

The day before he spotted something suitable back in Ireland and popped a deposit on it. He didn't want anything else at that point so I wasn't driving 120miles return to look at this car I'd arranged.

So I sent an apologetic mail to the guy on messenger the morning before the day I was due to look at it. Said the father had spotted something else and good luck with sale etc..

Got a nasty message back about being a time waster and a complete knob etc. Got a nasty comment on a Facebook post about being a time waster to "warn" other people, I got that deleted. Etc etc.

Like I'm under no obligation to buy/view. And that's the reality, your car isn't the only car out there. And if something else comes up in between the arranged time, especially if I'm viewing it on behalf of someone, well there's nothing I can do to be honest. Suck it up, the world doesn't owe you a sale. Like what's the point of turning up to only waste time if I wasn't going to buy.

Anyway bit of a rant. Sorry.

Actually I'd prefer someone looked at the car before haggling. How can you decide what you're willing to pay without looking at it? Fair enough the "I've got £x, will you accept it" routine if you're genuinely willing to pay that amount without further haggling.

I once told someone over the phone that I'd knock £50 off for every fault I had not already mentioned.

You were quite right. You politely let him know in good time.

Maybe vendor behaviour like that leads to THE SILENCE  or as I call it BEAMED UP BY ALIENS. I have even had people be on their 'way over' and 'disappear' into the famous South London Triangle- spooky stuff.

Somewhere there is a civilization on a distant planet populated by missing tat buyers...a kind of virtual world where they all say 200M8 for ever and ever....

I find it much easier to buy and sell through anywhere but here.
It's easier to get actual money from the general public even if you do have to deal with the odd spastic.

I've both bought and sold on here with no problems at all, and only been royally pissed about on the one occasion.

My experience of dealing with the general public is that the 'odd spastic' is more the norm than an exception - you're welcome to them!
