A long time ago in a Galaxie far, far away (and other shit)

Right. NO GALAXIE UPDATES...yet...

Crashed the Jag by sliding it slowly into a kerb in the snow and bent the subframe mounts. Chalk it down, buy winter tyres next time. You can see where the force of the hit shook off all of the shitey slush.

Absolutely gutted because I really liked it and so did my missus. Subframes are cheap, fitting them is not. There's a mysterious new oil leak, a buggered engine mount and the air suspension was down. I may try get this fixed.

Volvo had its work done and has full MOT:

New pads and discs all around.

ARB drop links

Radiator fan working as expected

No error codes

Insight now has full MOT as well. Needs protecting from the salt though. Some advisories for minor crust to things like the Matiz rear springs. It is an excellent backup car

I also found some old pics of my ex-cars

Liked for the MOT successes and not the Jag subframe. At least it was just a kerb and you don't have an insurance claim for sliding into another car. Something similar happened to me 5 years ago and I considered it a success being able to get a tiny amount of steering input and pilot my out of control car between the two parked cars it was heading for and into a wall! Some damage to my car, the wall survived and no insurance claim.

No progress but some current pics to give an idea of what's needed. I haven't moved this in donkeys.

- Small bit of rocking to free up brakes

- Check all fluids

- Pump fuel through new filter to see if there's any more crap in there

- Check spark plugs (lots of carbon)

- Pump accelerator to see if fuel reaches the carb

- Turn over...almost fires up

- Check points (had to order feeler gauge but distributor, points, condenser look brand new)

This wasn't just empty promises ^

Massive shout-out to the insane pace and quality of work done by a certain Mr Nuttz - @GingerNuttz, all of the work here is by his hand.

The parts I'd sliced out weren't cutting the mustard, large swathes of the floor were pitted and on their way out.

The crusty window seal was giving me the boak in-case it was on a similar scale to Eddie's Huggy.

It seems I got lucky however and the body filler wasn't extreme but only covering a small hole.

In other news I've quit my job because it was shit and I hated it. Progress on other cars will be limited until I sort out more employment.

I was hoping to move the Visa and begin work earlier this month but that will now be pushed back a few months.

The Jag is still sat in the car park waiting for some love. I start it up and run it occasionally just to remember why I have it.

I ended up going through the insurance. It was a pain in the arse but the payout covered what I paid even after buying it back and the compulsory deposit and my premiums are down 15-20% on last year. Win I guess?

Holy feckin' Jesus.

So my flat has been ruined by a burst pipe under the floor that's been going for 6+ months, possibly even years and there's potentially no insurance. By ruined I mean the bathroom, hallway, bedroom and kitchen all need new walls, floors and fixtures. There was 2 inches of water over several hundred square feet. 4+ weeks worth of work and £20k+.

Bathroom needed to be ripped out and taken to the tip ASAP. The v90 is the ideal candidate for this but the power steering shit its pants a couple months back. A quick attempt at patching and we gave up. Please note the size of the pile of shite outside the flat

Only 1 other car on the fleet is running but it's not exactly built for tip runs. I have shower doors, a sink, a toilet, a floor and tiles to move....

Well fucking well...the shower tray not only fits, its got room to spare. Madness. And check this out, 90mpg...

I used some chipex on the horribly pockmarked bonnet and flaked paint on the doors. Colour match was very reasonable. The car is now a 10footer as opposed to a 30footer

The Galaxie is progressing nicely in the background. I'll do a proper update once it's ready. It was hiding many many crusty bits above and beyond the ones I thought it had

Bad news flat.

Good news job.

Good news Gakaxie.

Good news Honda.

I had to go look for tech specs, but the Galaxie is almost to the inch, the same dimensions as my Fury.

America wonders why they didn't sell many over there, despite looking smaller than they actually are, they are pretty big vehicles...

No Buildings insurance?  If you own it, I'm assuming you have buildings insurance, many mortgage companies strongly recommend you have it.  If it's rented, then it's down to the Landlord.

I've heard of people having to do battle with insurance companies over water damage from burst pipes in the past.  It's always ended up as an insurance cost though.

The insurance is through the factors who cover the entire development.

The stick in the mud here is that they switched insurers in February 2021 and the insurance summary explicitly lists all buildings besides mine despite billing me every month for it. Factor says it's a typo but haven't backed it up in writing.

@Matty, https://chipex.co.uk/

It was recommended by a friend who is fairly meticulous about his cars. It's an improvement on the Insight but not perfect. I'd buy it again.

Many thanks. My old bm has more stone chips than a quarry tipper so I'll look into it.

Hope all goes the best it can with the flat.

If you've been paying a premium, there is absolutely no way they can wriggle out of their obligation.  You need to be house elsewhere while exploratory works are carried out to find the extent of the water damage.  It (like rust in a car) is *always* more extensive than you think.

^^Absolutely.

You've paid the premium to the factors and have had no reason to doubt that your property is insured.

It's now up to the factors to sort it out with the insurers.

As said it will be impossible for them to wriggle out of this and if they drag their heels you are in a pretty strong position to start applying pressure to have the flat sorted out.

You need some evil rapacious lawyers as the factor's arse is well out the windae on this one; Govan Law Centre is good for this kind of shenanigans, but even Shelter may be able to help.

Brief fleet update:

V90 - took it to the local garage to fix the PAS pipe leak. They couldn't patch it, couldn't source a replacement rack and couldn't replace the pipe. The pump is also making noises now, cheers lads. Off to a trusted fixer & pragmatist at the end of August for some major works.

Galaxie - even more rust would you believe. The whole car has turned out to be ~50% iron oxide, ~30% lazy, historic, American bodges and 20% cool as fuck bits on the outside. Edging closer to being fixed by the very capable hands of @GingerNuttz

I'll do a proper post when it's all done.

Jag - rotting away in the background. Not sure what to do with this now. It's been idle for 6 months. It's cost me £0 at this point and I have zero time to contribute.

Insight - sexpot & king of cars. Drove to Perth and performed admirably. Thrashed it for 58mpg on the way there. 76mpg on the way back.

Visa - no news but more positive comments from random folk.

Roffle win mini R50 -

Big ol' trip down south. 5hrs on the sweatbox train.

Someone was smoking in the bathrooms and the British transport police were called near Carlisle.

Watched a child get arrested at a station near Wolverhampton.

Then picked up this from the very friendly shiter @stephen01

Screenshot_2021-07-04-19-44-39-31_4b14b257287ac0a6d1fd5fbb2487716f.thumb.jpg.0d09fec4aeeec60170638b9c2b43af21.jpg

A few quick jabs of the brakes to shake off the crust and it was good to go.

It did 280 miles without any hesitation or complaints. 65mph, £63 in fuel and it's used less than half a tank! It's fast and eager. No clunks from the suspension. Drives straight, stops straight. Gear change is nice. It's clean and smells great. Interior feels solid and well built. Way less terrifying than driving an Aygo on the motorway.

The downsides:

Vague clutch biting point (I think)

The seats can contain approximately 50% of my arse. I believe normal humans were the target market for these cars, to my detriment.

Many revs to achieve motorway speeds as expected with tiny petrol

The roads in Glasgow are similar to the roads found in medieval Italy. Crashy, hard suspension = bad times.

This will likely be a stop gap as it's my only working 4 seater but not sure what function it will serve
