A long time ago in a Galaxie far, far away (and other shit)

The Leeds Connection

Was great meeting @captain_70s and talking chod. Great to see the dynamic Triumph duo in the flesh after reading 50 pages of rusty terror. A+++ would meet again.

We talked about potentially hitting the main 2020 Shitefest in May + January's Scotshite and if circumstances allow, I'll take the Galaxie to join the party.

I am late to this excellent topic which is me all over. Aaaaand I used to own a '66 Galaxie some years ago, in this very colour. Mine was a RHD 4-door sedan, same 390 but 4-barrel so rated at 310hp in Murrican. Also had a hubcap missing, bit of a coincidence! Used to use loads of oil until my mate (who sold it to me) sorted it out. Rear main seal was knackered. After that it was fine, would cruise very nicely at 70-ish. The last time I saw it the engine and trans had been removed to be put into a RHD '63 Galaxie convertible but the rest was complete. It was in a friend's private yard at his home and may still be there.

Y'all got any pics? That sounds like one hell of a sexy car. I've thought about switching the carbs for a 4 barrel.

I cannot for the life of me reattach that hubcap securely. It's killing me inside. I've tried kicking, shouting, hammering, screaming etc

There are pics somewhere in my house but where could they be? Being back in the olden times they will be actual real photos so it would be a case of if I stumble across any by chance. Actually my Galaxie did have four hubcaps but only three were correct. It was quite nice to drive, smooth and quiet. I used to live in a dead end road directly opposite the entrance to a primary school, there were only seven houses and mine was the only one with a garage and drive. On said drive lurked the Galaxie so not difficult to spot but one afternoon a woman parked right across my drive in something like a Fiat Uno. Obviously it was of no importance to her that I may have wished to go out and she gave the Galaxie a sneery sort of look. So I backed it up to about three inches from her door, sat back and waited. Back she came with small child only to discover that she couldn't of course enter her vehicle via the driver's door. It was amusing to watch her have to scrabble across from the passenger side. Had she asked me to move the Galaxie I would have refused as a matter of principle and of course the Galaxie could easily have pushed her Fiat across the road without breaking into a sweat. I really hate people  that park across driveways especially when there is a car parked on it.

Well goodness me, had a notion that I had looked at these photos fairly recently, opened the first pack of photos to hand (I have thousands going way back) and the first four photos were of my Galaxie, think it was HKT84D, imported new by Lincoln Cars, Ford's import centre for US/Canadian, German and Aussie Fords. Still had their nice metal plaque on the dash. Incidentally the RHD Galaxies had a different dash, think it was from a circa 61/62 Lincoln Continental.  I was wrong about the hubcaps, had the two correct ones on the right and different ones on the left. Dual exhaust pipes for four barrel woofling. It didn't have a lot of rust, the bottom of the rear quarters had some grot, think there was some in the front arches but overall it was a solid old thing.

Up on axle stands today since I got my jack back.

Lots of crusty patches in all footwells. Sills, chassis and boot are all super solid. Only small amounts of oil seepage from the various components, not enough for a drip. Great news overall I think.

Will become a YouTube certified master welder in the next 2 weeks and then borrow some welding kit from my dad. Not a clue about welding but i'm inspired by @captain_70s efforts

Also @59Impala, your Galaxie was an absolute stunner. Thanks for sharing ?

I'm going to use this quiet period where I'm waiting for parts money to post my personal tat history

VAG FAN WARNING

MG ZT-T   £311

Superb and probably the best looking car I've had. Best handling and most planted ride too. 27mpg on a run as the gearing was not meant for motorways. My feet were too big for the footwell and would regularly catch on the dash trim. Various leaks, some vacuum lines and the rear quarter window. Absolutely NOT fast. Sold to a Greek robotics professor with a sob story who used it to drive back to Greece and abandon it.IMG-20170904-WA0003.thumb.jpg.317ff8b29db854389cd830aebc785452.jpg

Audi A6 C4 2.6 petrol poverty trim £350 (only photo I have of it, sorry)

I have a soft spot for the C4. Super classy interior. Well built and pleasant to drive. Had various vacuum leaks that only got temporarily fixed and thus a bad misfire. Scrapped due to time wasters on bumtree.

Merc 200TE £550

Bought from a driveway dealer in Leicester at 11pm. Crazy Italian spec - LHD, small petrol engine, LPG, leather, sunroof, manual, sportline (I think). Owned by an Italian guy who tore the plates off and abandoned it in a garden because of shitey bureaucracy. Had dangerous homemade LPG tanks in the back, a fuckload of wrong sized tyres, fucked rear suspension and didn't run well. I had it serviced, replaced the grill, LPG tanks removed, new spheres, fake Swedish plates and had it MOTd. Gave up on the import process after 3 months and 4 attempts after an old lady shouted at me for having too many cars.

Skoda 1.9 TDI L&K £650

Bought from a guy in Motherwell. I turned up with some mates who look rough and noticed he was acting coy and seemed a little intimidated. Turns out it was OMGHGF and he knew about it. I found a folding knife in the back and asked him if he wanted it back. He did not. Drove it 500miles and then gave it away for free as i couldn't keep it any longer. Didn't like the car but loved the colours.

Audi S8 - £3500

My 2nd car after an Aygo. Had to wait 3 months to pick it up as the garage sorted out a few niggles. I paid £3650 for a year's insurance. Really special car. I day dreamed about driving this all the time and found excuses to go out.  Developed a misfire and 2 garages couldn't fix despite changing the timing belt kit, sending off the ECU for repair and taking everything apart. I couldn't justify the running costs and I'd never be able to get it running myself so sold it to a guy who broke it for £1250. RIP. easily the best car I've owned.

VAG tat.

Red golf - driven from the seller to the scrappies. Shite

A3 - superb car but no personality. Bought for my sister and the seller looked like king George III

Green golf - Supreme buy. Much loved until immobilizer death

S6 - great for motorway journeys. Like driving a block of granite in terms of feel and handling. 26mpg. Loved this.

Sounds like you're almost as good* at making a profit on cars as I am.

Worst part of car ownership is selling. I get one no-show and just give up. My time is worth more than that. I'd rather drive a car at high speed into the sea than sell to the general public at this stage of my life

I am however excited about sending the Visa back into circulation at some point but I'm really enjoying it.

I  bought my Final Edition S8 for 1200 quid from a Turkish stoner around the corner and sold it for 2 grand to a Turkish Audi employee in Germany who currently converts it to LHD and does a complete nuts and bolts restoration on it. Just got to be a little creative when buying/selling a car?

I'm on it like a dog on a whopper. Visa or Galaxie? That's the real question.

I shall gently suggest to Girlfriend_70s that her life would be much improved if I were to drive somebody else's car, one with no heating, down the motorway in the middle of winter so you can bring both via the power of magic and relationship strain. After all everybody and their dog has seen the Tronda.

If she hates this idea we can always convoy, but she's always bloody cold anyway so I don't see what difference it would make...
