I'll tell you what I fancy a drive in...

But I can't.

Other than a four litre, six pot Aston Martin, a Citroen CX or something hopelessly oversized from the US, I've stopped wondering what cars feel like to drive anymore.

I could perhaps manage a tootle in a softly sprung Xsara Picasso or possibly a thrash in a silly 101 bhp Sirion...

Other than that... Is there anything left that's still interesting? What would you like, or recommend to drive?

I really want to have a go in something properly "manual" like a Morris minor or something along those lines

especially given the driving lessons iv had now etc :)

as for what id recommend?

well do I really even need to say it!

and most of the people who have visited the FoD in recent times have already driven it! :) (and it only gave 2 people PTSD! Soz @brownnova  and @Mrsbrownnova,  the rest seemed to have a good time!)

The DB7 with a manual transmission and the Jaguar supercharged engine is definitely something I would like to try. The way I understand it that car is a mix of XJS/Ford influence/prototype Jag XK8. It's a shame the AJ16 engine and a manual box never were intended for the XK. It would have made for a creamy, robust cruiser.

Basically,

Does it have an engine/motor?

More than 2 wheels ? (I reckon I'd kill myself on a bike in about 3 secs flat)

Then I'll take a shot!

Don't care if I have driven it before - I never refuse a shot. I've been surprised by some fairly mundane fayre, and disappointed by exotica.

Winners so far this year include

XJ-S V12 (cheers Skizzer!)

Pug 205 1.8d (Davehedgehog31 blue beastie)

Volvo turbonutter4x4 wardrobe transporter (davidfowler2000)

And the crowning glory of Loser1's 305 xud dreamboat

I've driven most of my bucket list of cars (I don't count things like Lamborghinis and the like) but there are a couple of gaps.
I'd love a shot in something like a Caterham 7 and a go at a proper off road course in an old Series Land Rover, and if I get curious enough I know both of these experiences can be bought.

The only 'normal' car I'd love a drive in is the one I was a passenger in for the first 10 years of my life but have never managed to get behind the wheel of, which is a Renault 16.

You see, I've driven a Morris 1000, the DS would be like the CX, and the Alpine, DB7 & Monaro would just be too fast to properly give them their head on the real road.

I am saddened.

you aint mentioned what I recommended tho

To anyone wanting to experience actual 'driving' I can recommend a Dodge 50 truck

not quite the same thing, but I am hoping to have a shot of Zels camper at some point, that will be interesting :)

Driven one pale blue plastic car, I reckon you've driven them all and I had a Trabant for six years as my daily.

until you go for brake pedals or a steering wheel that does not exist! (not to mention 3 wheeler vs 4 wheels on a trabant!)

(which funnily enough was not an issue for me, as I hadn't been regularly driving a normal car before I got the Invacar, so I didn't have to "unlearn" anything!)

Caterhams are well worth a go, though probably hiring one rather than owning. If you can get a go on one on a track experience they are brilliant fun, even the entry level 1400cc ones go like a rocket and have superb handling.

I'd love a go in a morgan 3-wheeler too.

I'd perhaps suggest flipping this around, driving any car is as much about the road as the car. You can have a lot of fun on a windy a-road in a £350 toyota celica or a £500 yaris, its much less fun on the same roads in a 150bhp Saab 9-3. I suspect it wouldn't be a lot more fun in a £100k ferrari or zonda TBH, though have no reference point for these kind of cars.

Go and find some genuinely good roads and it can be a lot of fun. I drove a Skoda Rapid Estate with a 1.2tsi engine and 4 passengers for a week the year before last, surely a recipe for a deeply turgid experience? But not so, we were on holiday just outside Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast of Scotland, and had to drive there from Inverness airport - fantastic roads, fantastic scenery and minimal traffic made it an absolute joy.

Apart from the usual group B rally cars, I've always really fancied having a go at driving a lorry. Although if I was a lorry driver I'd probably end up buying into that tedious professional driver/knight of the road crap that some blokes insist on spouting.

Recommend driving a fixed-body from the late 70's- a wonderfully shonky experience of piloting something large but having only an approximate feeling of what it's actually doing, particularly as by now most of it won't be working or will be so worn it lollops along like a giant jellymould.

Everyone should drive something really heavy at some point in their life. It's a gratifying experience. I chalk it up in the experience list against the light/nimble/fast race-car feeling as being the diametric opposite and it's equally good.

I want to have a go at piloting something hueg and thirsty from the mid 70's, to sit on comfortable velour and feel like I'm traveling in my living room.

I've driven poxy underpowered cars like the Trabby & a 2cv, I've driven fast cars like a Porsche, an Audi 200T & a Jaguar. I've recently scratched my V8 itch. I've driven a big eight wheeler and an articulated lorry, not for hundreds of miles, I'll admit. And I have a T2 which is desperately slow, sees hills before I do and is essentially antiquated (although I do hold the lap record at Donington Park for vehicles in the Bay window class). I've driven a Mk2 Escort on mud & gravel. The roads are shit and clogged. I see supercars and I imagine them running hotter & hotter in the crowded traffic & I imagine the heavy clutch.

I laugh at people in supercars, Driving has lost its thrill.
