Abandoned E46

It's annoying to see a potentially viable* car go for scrap but as everyone else has said there really is no way of making it yours that doesn't leave you open to at best losing money if the previous owner comes forward to claim it, and at worst result in a load of hassle from the police.

If you want one for scrap money keep an eye on facebook and gumtree, I assume that the "£50 and a broken xbox tonite m8" crowd must occasionally get a bite otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it?

When this dvla disposal thing kicked off about 15-20 years ago a mate of mine spotted a nice * Rover R8 cabby in turquoise dumped at the side of the road with the inevitable no tax sticker on it.

He went to the dvla compound, paid various fees to get it released, had to back pay some tax and the like on it. No keys so paid to get it recovered, got keys sorted, started it up and OMGHGF explained why it was dumped.

When he eventually got that sorted it at great expense it rewarded him by getting him stopped on a daily basis due to the previous owners occupation* in the supply and demand trade.

Sold at a crippling loss but provided a valuable lesson to us all.

I bought a 520i E34 estate from a posh part of town before for pennies, well, cheap enough, old boy selling it as his son had bought a new car.

Took it to a local specialist as it was missing a bit only to be told said son had come in the middle of the night and removed it without paying his bill.

Chased the misfire for ages with no success, very intermittent.

Took it to Brighton and it cost me about £3,000,000 in fuel despite them apparently doing 30mpg, yeah OK, at 55mph perhaps (both I've owned were the same).

Decided to not start in a Churchill car park and a load of pricks watched me push it down trying to bump start it.

Called AA next day using my mother's details, found a fuse hidden under the dash blown but then noticed my brake lights didn't work all the time.

Insisted I fix this before driving home, wasted 2 hrs to then get caught in M25 traffic and the final straw was it overheated.

Got it home, parked it up, ended up selling it for fuck all.

Moral of the story? Not all car owners are as honest as the folk on here and often they're sitting there on the drive for a reason....... Like my e36 has for a good 7 years or so ??

I claimed a lime green 83 y reg metro in 93 or 94, took a month or so and then just popped a door lock out and got a key cut off it. Simpler times I guess.

All it needed for the test was a plate on the front valence, a horn and a pair of wiper blades. Great little 1.3s that went well and made me a few quid. Brown striped interior was ace.

Previous owner had done a bunk from the flat I was renting so they wrote to him and it came to me .

After that a golf mk2 that had been stripped of its bumpers and glass.

Inner city Manchester was rich pickings in the early 90’s

Still had / seen a couple fail .

Thought it was virtually unheard of for an M47? Ours has been brilliant.

As an aside, are there any  modern dervs which you've worked on which are around five years old which are slightly less shit than any others? Looking to go a bit newer with my fiancées daily but scared of newer, more complex dervs...

I quite enjoyed @Jim BellBellBell'sBellBBellBellBell'sBellBBellBell's E46 when I borrowed it a couple or years ago.

Seemed pretty well screwed together, though a bit heavy for its interior space and would have benefited from having a bigger engine.  Failing to keep up with my first 206gti (which had a totally fucked rear axle and the back wheels were wobbling all over the shop but got more stable as @scaryoldcortinadrove faster)  was a bit of a disappointment from the BMW's perspective.

I seem to recall that was also a notinabarn find, and had endless troubles.  Still would, moreso a touring with a six.

That's not heathly fella.

Less healthy than coming back under different aliases, Ben.
