The Vicar
Morning gents, hope this is okay to post. I'd like to start this thread so that I have somewhere to dump my many photos of shite cars and things spotted on my travels around Ireland and beyond. I seem to be clogging up the "dumped cars" and "lazy spotters" threads with my ramblings, so hopefully this will alleviate that - and act as a handy drop box for my photos, for my own records. I do get around quite a bit, I'm in Dublin or surrounding counties most days - and have monthly trips to London and Edinburgh that always prove fruitful. So, stick around for some quality content Best to start with the dumped Sierra I posted in t'other thread a few days ago: And more photos in fading light: I have left a couple of notes on this before offering to buy it, I've never heard anything. A local high spec Tipo, with colour coding, headlamp washers and sunroof: I visit this site often, they always have something interesting on the "forecourt" Exhibit A: Exhibit B: This RWD Starlet is driven daily by a little old lady near me: Once local Supercarry has since been sold on: This Audi still works for its keep at the races: These have sat here for a long time: And lastly, for now, because I have to go and do some actual work, this gem: This has been driven by the same gent for 50 years. I can never pass it without taking a photo, it is just that wonderful. I spoke to its driver briefly a few months ago and he mentioned that he had no plans to retire any time soon. More on the man and his van here: https://www.independent.ie/life/food-drink/food-news/irelands-oldest-icecream-man-is-honoured-with-special-award-35285131.html And here: To be continued...hopefully quicksilver, adw1977, 500tops and 22 others
Supernaut
I can tell this thread will have some quality content in it already. The graphics on that supercarry are superb! However, what the hell is the ice cream van? My knowledge of old commercial vehicles is somewhat poor. The Vicar

That C1 Audi 100 generally gets severely price-tagged by white room flippers on the very rare occasions that they come up. I wonder where that CX 22TRS is? It looks like it only* needs a driver's door and some attention to the bonnet leading edge to make presentable. The offside headlight reflectors always seem to deteriorate faster than the nearside ones.

When I spoke to the owner he said that he bought it as a chassis and cab in 1968 and had the body built separately. The registration is 1971 however, in those days one could buy a car/van, drive it home, and there was no sweat about registering it! I left my phone number but never heard anything back. I remember it when it was still with it’s first owner, until about 2012. It had that dent in the door even then. I have pm’d you it’s current location. Tadhg Tiogar

ETCHY
The ice cream van look like a buggered about with version of one of those 60's BMC vans that had the doors mounted at an angle at the back of the cab. I rather like it. That Starlet is a peach it's lovely. The Vicar

spartacus
Great thread, worth it for the Ice cream van alone, which in my opinion is possibly the unhappiest looking vehicle ever. I'm sure those windows below the screen, and the screen itself are off some Bedford commercial of that era, somebody will be along shortly to tell us. 10/10 The Vicar

quicksilver
That ice cream van has an awful lot going on styling wise. With that bustle on the back it looks like it should be rear-engined like an Atlantean bus (EDIT after watching the video: it is rear-engined, WTF?). Wonder what the story is with the Dolomite, exported in 2005 but still on UK plates almost 15 years later.

I think the rear section on the van might be there to accommodate the ice cream machine and cooler etc. It looks very much like an afterthought in any case! As for the Dolomite, I would imagine it was bought by someone who intended to import and reregister it, but they found it to be red rotten. All too common really. The Vicar
Some great sightings are to be had in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow, which retains a lot of its old world charm. This was right up the road, I nearly dropped me chips trying to capture it: I would highly recommend a stop off here if ever you find yourself in this part of the world; its just delightful. Sorry, sorry...back to bangers. Another shot of that delightful Audi: Back in Dublin, with this dainty little Starlet at the cemetery: And some more Jap scrap to finish for now: And a Beemer: Coprolalia, Skizzer, DVee8 and 9 others

It's a weird one, there's definitely an engine in the back that appears to be powering the van (he says it's a BMC 1.5 so presumably a diesel B-series) but it still has the engine cover hump in the cab. I can't figure out why anyone would bother converting a thrupenny bit FG to be rear engined though.

AndyW201
Great spottages, much want for that Sierra Laser! The ice cream van looks like one of Bryan Whitby's 'rocket' jobs. He built a few, based on the old Thru'penny bit, each with a few differences to the other. The rear engine will be a secondary engine. Early whippy machine equipped vans had a small petrol engine fitted at the rear to power the machine, often a Ford sidevalve. This is why early whippy vans were based on big vans like the Thru'penny bit and the 1 1/2 ton Commer as smaller vans couldn't take the weight. It was after Bryan Whitby came up with the direct drive system, which used a pulley on the crank of the van's engine with a series of belts to drive the machine, that smaller vans like the Bedford CA could be used. We had loads and one Saturday afternoon one of the lads rang up and said his truck had just stopped and wouldn't start so we called our mechanic out and as they had nothing to recover it he took my Bedford TK and me to recover it. We got there and sure enough it wouldn't start so the mechanic said we'll bump it off if you give me a tow up to about 20mph. The rope was fitted and I got the two moving up to the required speed when he dumped the clutch and the TK stopped dead. No seat belts I nearly cracked my head on the windscreen. Turns out it was seized solid, apparently the driver had topped up the oil and forgotten to put the cap back on then over the next couple of week lost the lot until that Saturday. Hell to pay. adw1977
Superb thread. The FG engine would be a lot bigger than 1.5 litres, a quick search online suggests they were usually 3.8 litres or more. A 1.5 litre BMC B series as a secondary engine at the back would make sense.
The Vicar
Thanks again for the kind words gentlemen. I do still see the ice cream around the locale from time to time, if the opportunity presents itself in the future I must try and speak with the driver again about it. I have no doubt given its publicity etc that it is in safe hands anyway, and so it should be. Hopefully it is preserved when John - its owner - gives it up. It deserves as much. Anyway, here's a few more photos for your perusing, starting with this forlorn Moggie: And on the same road, a few houses down, a double whammy: And even further down the same road: Not too far from the above is this early Vectra: And this Gem(ini): I see this around quite a lot, last-of-the-line Vectra A (Cavalier 'round these parts): I pass this regularly too, and from memory I would say it has been there at least 15 years: I came across this Mini recently while visiting a house nearby, obviously it has sat for a while but it looks like it was once a cherished example: This is one of two 205s that I see on the regular, I haven't yet snapped the other (a white 5 door) but I will in time: And this, I see often too: I saw this recently: And surprisingly is isn't this one, which sits forlorn in a garden nearby: I took this photo nearly two years ago now. I must see if its still there. I saw these on my evening run recently. The photos were taken in fading light and under the cover of trees, so they're not great: And lastly, for now: I have some photos from a recent classic auction that I suspect would go down well, I could post them later in the week if I can find them all in one place. michael t, JeeExEll, strangeangel and 7 others
The Vicar
Here are the aforementioned auction photos: I really wanted this. It was absolutely spectacular. Bidding had reached €1650, I had only brought €1500. This was quite appealing too: Made a very reasonable €1500, with just 41k on the clock. More: This had an impressive 180k on the clock, but certainly didn't show it (too much): This was just delightful: This made very little in the end: This, too, was wonderful: And lastly: Here are the final numbers: The highlights for me were, of course, the Marina, as well as the Camry which made 200 quid, the Montego, the Tasmin and the Transit. strangeangel, Carlosfandango, danthecapriman and 5 others

The Marina, for example, had been painted very poorly with a brush and no doubt hid a multitude of sins. I don't think it got so much as a wipe of a damp cloth before being painted. Another punter remarked to me that the Transit could be a great ad for isopon. The 127 wouldn't start and had clearly been sitting for some time. The TVR didn't run. There were some gems though, the Cortina for example was very cheap as you say yourself. The 2 door, rare and all as it is, had been sitting since 2007, and had a less desirable import reg, but it still made 5.5k. The W124 seemed quite expensive to me too, for a fairly basic 4 door. On the sub 1k stuff, the Carina was about the only real bargain of that lot. It looked very clean and there is a good market for them here, but usually higher spec examples.
