Defilthing Contiuned... Part 2

I  then spent a week driving the AX to work (its a 25 mile round trip each day) So was starting to clock up some tester miles, Theres a wheel alignment or wheel weight issue causing some vibration at 70mph, The radio worked well after the new speakers were fitted but the cassette did not really seem great. At some point that week the radio fuse blew again and has now been replaced 3 times by either Dave or myself so its staring too look like there may be an internal fault with that. Theres some sqeaks and rattles in the dash but other than that its been pretty much ok running wise.

Last weekend there was an entire day when it wasnt chucking it down with rain so I decided to get the AX up on the ramps and change the engine oil. I've looked though the paperwork and can't find any record of it being done since 2009. The oil looked ok on the dipstick so its probably  been done since then... but still better safe than sorry. I'm treating it to some shell Helix as it was offer at euro car parts. The sump has a tiny 3.5L capacity so my 5L can has plenty spare for topping up...

Old Oil and filter. Nothing too shocking here. No major swarf or metal debris, though the filter looked old.

Gave the sump and bottom end of the engine a bit of a wipe round which should make it a bit easier too identify any leaks or weeps. First impressions are that the engine seems fairly accesable and probably wouldnt be too bad to work on.

I did a couple of other routine checks under the bonnet and chucked a new jubilee clip on a fuel hose which was missing its crimp. The air filter looks clean enough so if is still own the car next year I might to that then. The only other jobs that might need doing are the HT leads and plugs, I suspect the leads are origonals as they look pretty ancient and I imagine the plugs must be of a similar age. I think theres a recipt in the file for the Dizzy cap and rotor arm replacment at some point but other than that I think its all factory fitted.

Moving on I gave the car another vaccum out including the mats which got another wet vac. They've improved quite a bit and most of the stains have gone...

The wash and wax seems to have stood up too a weeks rain quite well too...!

It still needs a good pressure wash over the underside as its obviously been driven on some rough muddy ground which has coated most of the arches in a coating of clag.

There are a few parts I'm on the lookout for and would like to source It would massivly benefit from:

  • A set of AX wheeltrims.
  • A 4 speed correct gearknob
  • A boot trim cover pannel to cover up the wiper motor.
  • A front bumper in good condition.
  • A good working 90's era radio cassette. (prefer blaupunkt as thats whats fitted presently but anything considered.

Theres probably one or two other bits I've forgottent about too but the stuff on the list is probably priority.

Cheers Joe

I really enjoyed that video, and the driver certainly knows the limits of the car. It was a bit frightening seeing how poor his brakes were compared to the other cars on the track, I could almost feel the panic hearing his tyres on the verge of locking up yet seeing the distance between him and the car in front diminishing by the second. Balls of steel.

The wheel trims will be the hardest to get as the correct era ones had a nasty habit of breaking on removal leaving the retaining ring on the wheel. I may have a 4-Spd knob at work, I shall check as we have an L reg Debut in the bottom of the yard, I don't think I have a boot trim as I had to break into my ax's boot when the C'locking went tits up.

I have a Cassette deck in my garage clearance thread, but no real means of testing if you want to have that to try?

Cheers, Keep me posted on the gear knob and trim if you come across one,

Radio wise I've been looking through my ebay crates this morning to try and find a one, Dave reconed he had left a SS1 surplus blaupunkt in my life but I can't seem to find it. I may have sold it last year. I have just found this Radiomobile affair its not really right age but I'll see if it works....!

Dave's just spotted a NOS Front bumper on ebay for £20 so I've got that covered now. Its in Hemel Heampsted though...! Missed out on a NOS set of wheel trims last week on ebay which was annoying as they were listed and sold while I was at work!

Somewhere else on utube is in car footage from another car on track. You think he’s doing alright until this little ax pisses past him on the door handles with a little trail of clag.

Absolute hero.

I remember when I first watched that, was brilliant! I nearly cheered mysf when he smashed it, but remembered I was in the office!

The Following morning we had a few hours to kill before getting the ferry so set out to Drive the AX round Paris for a bit. I'd come this way so it seemed rude not to visit the center, and rag it round the Arc de Triomphe a couple of times. So heres an assortment of AX pics.
