Had enough of shite

Does it have to be a car? You'd get a half decent Elgrand or Alphard for 7 grand. Bit older than some of the previous suggestions, maybe, but 1600-2000kg kerb weight and both come in diesel variety. Sure you can get hybrids now as well....Most are auto and the Elgrand can come with switchable AWD I believe.

These W212 are supposed to be proving more reliable than Mercedes would likely have them to be

As this pre-facelift doesn't have the more modern blingy front end, they have dropped in value a fair bit. I personally think this style is more old money and classy looking.

These can have terrible injector issues. I looked at an e250 before I bought my citroen but the online horror stories put me off.

Also the interiors feel like they're made out of laminated egg boxes.

I know the e350 is supposed to be the pick of the engines. But then every modern engine seems to have its horror stories - except the 2.2 ctdi Honda lump.

The e class seems to be a very popular Uber/Ola can around here. Because of that I've been in a few including today. I've always found that the interiors to be pretty decent and wear well tbh. Obviously get a pretty darn hard life as cabs in a city too... Especially as Uber/Ola cabs often do the nightshifts on the Fri/Sat.

It's quite a big problem, Mercedes cheaped out on the injectors and the customers pay the price. The e350's are a nightmare to work on as they have the turbo in the v. That's why I  thought fuck it and bought a Citroen as they're all as fucking hopeless as each other.

Merc is a possibility if the right one came up, I have a real aversion to Audi. Years ago I drove little else, then VW started their marketing and I stopped. quattro, Procon 10, 10 year warranty, flush glass. Audi were innovators, and cars made by engineers. Now they have huge grilles, slick interiors and in my experience, are pretty unreliable. I had more newish VW group cars on my truck than anything else. Which is why I'm wary of any VAG group car, they are very nice on the surface. I have seen beyond the soft damping and textured plastic....  If you had spent as much time as me getting steel bolts out of aluminium housings, or extracting broken tensioner bolts  you'd understand..

I do like a Yeti and Superb though. But I'd always be on edge. I love the look af a Passat CC, but they all share the same stuff . DSG scares the shit out of me. They are taking over the world. The chap I took to the airport the other day, he collects his brand new Golf GTI in 2 weeks, from the factory. As he is a business user, it is 150 euro a month all in. That is unbelieveable, but probably the reason VW group is king.

Aren't ALL cars nowadays either white, black or grey?

Funny, we were driving today and I was ranting to the wife about all the monochrome cars, when a bright pea green scirocco overtook us. It was so refreshing to see. Even the Koenigsegggggg thing I saw was boring coloured. Oh, and I DETEST black wheels.

I always feel with VAG you just have to pick carefully and wisely.

E.g. EA113 2.0TFSi is pretty good and solid while the later EA888 2.0TFSi is shit. 2009 On CR 2.0TDI are good in longitudinal, earlier PD and crap oil pump drive are crap. Later 2.0TDI CR transverse seem pretty good. DSG depends on installation and year. 2005 on 6spd with wet clutch are generally good (can jolt their mechatronic but you can live with that), later 7spd units with dry clutch get through their clutches. But then you get 7spd in transverse and they have wet clutches and are reasonable but fluid changes are a nightmare (two different types of fluid in the box). Multitronic seems a complete liability no matter the year or generation.

Get the right one then they tend to be pretty reliable and parts are plentiful on them. Get the bad models and they're shocking.

However as they're so common, faults are well known and understood. Most garages will be very familiar with the common models and engines. Parts easy to get hold of and plentiful while massive commonality. Full diagnostics is easy with VCDS.

That has just scared me right off. .  I'm so glad I got the fuck out of the motor trade.

You know when VAG make a blooper of an engine when a diehard VAG loving specialist moans about it.

This video is a good watch

Does make it tempting to just get something brand new when you can get a 420i on 1k down, £265 per month for a 8k p/a mile lease. Ok you don't get it at the end, but you also don't pay for any consumables and if it breaks you throw it back at the dealership for them to worry about.

I thought the insignias all had the 2.0tdi engine from launch, that almost all liked to shit itself at low miles. Did the fiat 1.9ctdi ever make it on them?

Eh. I'm so out of touch with new cars. I like the CDTi after getting my head around them in Saabs and Alfas. Are they gone now?

We had three at work, got them a few months after launch.

There were issues with DPFs and seats with taller drivers, but they were ok for the first three years or so.

One had some sort of expensive problem out of warranty and was punted cheap, one was traded in and the third was bought by a staff member.

And that one caused its owner so many issues it was traded n for a new Citroen.

Jesus H Christ . Times have changed so much.

I've been dealing with this on my own for a few weeks now. A problem shared is a problem halved as they say. I feel like I need to go to a quiet place with 10 years worth of Auto Express magazines and speed read.

Insignia's?  I know all Vauxhalls are shite, but they seem to be fairly trouble free. I know the old Fiat diesel lump inside out and newer ones are quite handsome. I even found out you can get a 4x4!

Whose gonna be first to say I'm insane?

It's only when you say Vauxhalls aren't all shite that you can be deemed totally off yer box!

A few years back I was friends with a load of Vauxhall "mechanics", not one of them owned a Vauxhall even with the staff discount they refused them ?

When I worked for Vauxhall back in the early 90's, every one of us had a Vauxhall. Then came the Vectra.....
