I think this is the first K11 I’ve driven since I passed my test in an early Super S 24 years ago.

Its great!!

The gearbox isn’t shagged yet so hopefully I won’t be the last owner.

Needs a good clean up though. More photos to follow when I’ve done that.

Superb, nice little motor, 1.0 or 1.3 ?

That CVT box is a hoot, the little buggers (ours was a 1.3) really shift.

Oh wow that transmission selector I could never understand why the thing had to be a foot long :-D, always used to amuse me.

Really eager, zippy little cars, I'd recommend a K11 to anyone.

Enjoy it !

That's the first K11 I've knowingly seen pop-outs on.  Until now, I assumed they were all fixed glass in the back of the three doors.

I can confirm that a very slim girl can be inserted into a Micra via the pop out windows when she locks her keys in the car. My sister had one of these, until she wrote it off.

Ah man, those alloys woulda smartened up this blue one a treat!

According to the registration document it’s a 1.3 GX, which sounds a bit upmarket but has keepfit windows, no central locking, and as you can see above also no rev counter. This is a shame, as I love watching what the needle does when you hoof it in a CVT-equipped vehicle.

I havent had much time yet to properly check it over, it’s not immaculate by any means with plenty of Channel Islands dinks and that. The front crossmember looks like it might need some attention, and it’s got a comedy repair involving a facelift tailgate handle, but the main issue is a big KRAK in the screen which I suspect was caused by the bonnet catch seizing open and letting the panel blow backwards when not closed properly.  On the plus side it’s got a full set of brand new 13 inch tyres, everything seems to work as it should and there’s nothing wrong at all with the way it drives. Overall verdict: Liking it so far!

OK so youre probably wondering how Im getting on with this thing.

IMG_2010.thumb.JPG.0bb4e8042cb321fd00d21135f1c15092.JPG

I gave it a thorough and comprehensive ultra-quick clean up then set about seeing what's what.

Jazzy GX spec interior, as was the fashion mid/late 90s.

Car has an engine.  This is good.  Air filter (no photo, sorry) is pleasingly recent.  Plug leads are dated 1997.

These look a little crispy, thatll be why theyre not always working then.  Lets have a look down behind:

This doesnt look marvellous.

Crap.  New crossmember time I think.

This is the most visible issue, not sure if a secondhand windscreen transplant is viable on these?

IMG_2033.thumb.JPG.72bb35159a07551a815272dc78b06e5c.JPG

Shame as it is a nice top tint job.

Bonnet looks somewhat corrugated

IMG_2035.thumb.JPG.646da975fec9d3bb76921a8d568eb86f.JPG

Yeah thats been bent back at some point.  No doubt related to the busted screen.

IMG_2030.thumb.JPG.cf8fa74262293da6c24f9c5b02fecb1a.JPG

And that bonnet catch isnt springing back, there's the loose bonnet issue explained then.

Any thoughts what this might have been originally in?

K11 and J11 (and ST 955i).  Incidentally those fully colour-coded bumpers are a later modification, the blue paint over the "rubbing strips" started washing off when I scrubbed them!

Crossmember from the top doesn't look too bad. Look at the bottom instead, that's where the large holes are! If your car has power steering, get it welded and then plastered in underseal so it doesn't fail. Given its a GX CVT I imagine it does have PAS. Love that interior. Mine is purple. Well it was then the Sun said "no"...

Aye it's got power steering -- also it *does* have central locking, which I didn't realise at first.  See that wavy metal pipe that runs behind (and is cable-tied to) the bumper grille then loops back on itself?  That's to do with the PAS system.  There's an extremely rusty and worryingly incomplete vertical bit of metal under the bonnet latch, which has rusted away completely from the crossmember and I am guessing was what this pipe is supposed to be attached onto.

The crossmember itself is a lot more ugly than the photos look - I'll get under it later on.  I understand it's possible to pull out the old front panel, throw it away as far as possible, and bolt in (rather than weld) a new one.  Apparently it's not essential to structural integrity?  Allegedly.

Sweet. Looking good apart from the rusty front underside. They all go there.

GM mat looks like it might have been in a Mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier, at a push, Mk3 Cavalier. I could probably source you some K11 mats if you wish but they are getting a bit harder to find.

I have a blanking plate for the missing trim on the underside of the boot if you want it. Let me see if I can find it. Usually there is a pulling handle to go in there. Seems such a petty thing to concentrate on making different pieces for.

Another thing that K11 Micras seem to sometimes have and sometimes not are strut-top covers. Again, something thats a bit hit and miss. Doesn't make a difference if it has then or not though.

With the problems sorted that'll be a nice little motor, like that colour.  GX was mid-ish spec I think, (we had an Equation,  base spec & it certainly was basic !)

They were serious rotters though which is a pity as in every other respect Nissan got them just about right.

Starting to be a steadily diminishing sight now the little K11's, which is sad.

Today's update.  I can confirm that the underside of the front crossmember is indeed well crunchy.  Managed to procure a new front panel locally:

IMG_2053.thumb.JPG.1002f14a3bdd33635b21d2f71000b740.JPG

HOWEVER.  Given the propensity of these things to rot I decided to have another good look around before plunging in and taking the front end apart.

IMG_2018.thumb.JPG.fad29dc1cc24c3961758d34720651ca5.JPG

This looked slightly ominous, though the driver's side sill itself is actually solid.  Well it is underneath the door at least.

IMG_2021.thumb.JPG.2468c98641e8666faaa23ad32e180baf.JPG

This, on the other hand, was unexpected and is not good.

IMG_2032.thumb.JPG.7b159e29fee65959b7fabc18d6c75a91.JPG

Something similar going on under the passenger side rear quarter too.

I have to say guys and girls, sorting all this out is probably beyond the attention I'm prepared to give to this Micra.  Being blunt it needs new screen, new crossmember, all that sill grot (plus no doubt a whole load more behind the scenes) cutting out and patching up, plus various other little niggles addressing so I think that's it in terms of my ownership.  Bit disappointing given the low mileage but yeah, win some lose some eh.

Before I advertise it locally 4 SPEARS OR REAPERS is anybody here mad enough to mount a rescue mission, bearing in mind it needs to be put on a boat from the Channel Islands and will require a fair bit of graft to be MOT-able?  I haven't got much in it so am open to ridiculous offers.  It does drive super nicely and has four fresh tyres on it, if that boosts the appeal?

That's a shame. It's one of TADTS rust spots in a K11, most of the ones still on the road have seen some sparky stick action on the rear sills.
None of it's terribly expensive to sort but they're still at the stage where people think of them as sub £500 bangers so no-one wants to spend much money fixing them.

Gearbox should fetch a bit if it's fit.

I can fully understand why you don't want to proceed with it.

I do hope somebody else can take it on  though & it doesn't get scrapped/broken for parts, as if the CVT is ok the rest could be fixed & it would be a nice little motor.

Lets hope it does end up in a new home, I hate seeing K11's scrapped., they're just great little cars & CVT ones are superb.

The rustproofing on K11's is bloody woeful though, Nissan really weren't good at that.

That's a shame. If someone doesn't buy it to fix, I do want a lot of parts from it!

I can imagine new sills, front crossmember and radiator mount and some other stuff would have you away for a couple more years, however I'd be very concerned for the rear arches, especially the seat belt mounts. That's what killed my parents' Tropic. If someone does decide to buy to fix, that would be great. K11 numbers aren't exactly falling slowly last time I checked.

I’m afraid the economics of old shitters over here is slightly different in view of the fact there’s no MOT for cars yet and so if your banger goes beyond that threshold the authorities would consider unroadworthy, then no worries, you just pick up another cheap snotter and take your chances with that.

I think I’m gonna put this up for £200 on local Facebook marketplace and see what happens, if no serious interest then I’ll try the technical college who have a few of these for the novice mechanics to learn on. Unless one of you lot wants to come in with a lower bid of course?

That’s that then! Ran the gauntlet of Facebook messers trying to swap for a GoPro of uncertain provenance or whatever, and sold to a nice bloke who was swayed by the shiny new front panel being included. Collected this morning while I was at work, so no farewell photo!

Hope its issues get sorted out and that it continues to give good service for a while longer.
