ShiteHire?

Cord Fourteener

Forgive if this is already a thing, or if it has been tried and failed already.

You know how the internet allows peer-to-peer access to cool things we might own, like the posh car peer-to-peer hire sites, classic car peer-to-peer hire, air BnB, sofa surfing, peer-to-peer auction, video sharing, you name it etc.

What if there was a shitter-to-shitter car hire thing? Say I was in a random part of the country and need a car, I could look up someone who has offered their chod for hire, cheaper than car rental and more fun. Surely that would be a win/win service?

Shoot me down if it's a stupid idea.

After having our tent destroyed by high winds at a music festival this year, I've been seriously considering renting a camper for next year. I was planning to enquire on here and this seems like a good opportunity! Anyone got a camper between Sussex and Oxfordshire that I could rent for the second weekend of August?

I do think we should have a database of all 'available' cars that shiters may have as spare cars and also 'spaces' where we may have a spare driveway / car parking space for temporary custodian-ship. Might be handy for those 'oh shit' times.

As I'm an Inventory manager, I'd happily be the database controller. :D

I tried to rent a 1993 Cadillac in LA a couple of years ago using an AirBnB type site, it was all going well until the renter demanded $300 to deliver it to LAX, this on top of the £250 for the week. He wouldn't entertain me picking it up from him elsewhere , so I fucked it off and got a Dodge Journey 2.7 R/T for $160 all in for the week from Thrifty or Budget- probably more Autoshite anyway, I didn't know they still made the Journey.

Hiring a car is a great way to experience it without any of the danger of ownership.  Trouble is, how do you make something like Turo actually work in the UK?  Our insurance system is such a farce I can't imagine them actually wanting to cover anyone in the event of a claim while the car was out on hire.  Are there specific hire insurers out there and, if so, are you still able to use the car as your ordinary car if it's insured as a hire-out vehicle?

I've often thought it would be useful to have a Shitter's Google map so we can see who's where to ask for assistance, look at a car, Shitely etc.. obviously down to members whether they want to be on a map, *waves arms - GDPR Police etc*

Excellent idea. GDPR is not a problem as long as people have given their permission and understand how it will be used. There would be to be some assurance of security, too - it would have to be available to shiters but not on public view.

There are certainly company's that offer rental car insurance but it's really expensive.  Ours is about £25k for 24 vehicles with £1k excess and they aren't keen on older vehicles.  I've been tempted to buy an automatic and stick it on there for the odd week of US tourist hire we loose through not having one but as it only cost me £20 to swap the Safrane onto my classic policy I'll stick to giving them Enterprises phone number.

I'd be happy to take this project on, unless anyone has an objection?

Don't know why but I thought we already had this?

On hire cars: there used to be a car repair garage that also did hire cars and one of the prime pieces of chod on the fleet was a Hillman Avenger that was already at least 20 years old! Renting that was cheeeeep and I did quite a few times. They also had a Fiat 127 and a Marina 1.3 DL for rent.  Boringly, they also had new Sierras and Escorts :(

https://turo.com/  - is one Doug Demuro has plugged before.

On here there has been unofficial "trusted shiter loan scheme" but it's very ad hoc.

Can you get Turo in the UK? Still, I'd rather have an old fun car rather than something too posh.

Yes, wouldn't it be good to be able to see where available car are easily, and be able to call up the owner.

One thought I had is that if our cars are typically worth less then £2k then we just have it in some contract agreement blerb that damages are paid for, or in the case of a break down (that's not users fault) the owner waives the charges. As long as you have fully comp insurance then it would be legal at least.

I'm thinking more of a shiters log that shows where we are, if we are often likely to be travelling a certain route (for shitely) or are skilled in a particular thing / likely to have some shite for sale etc. So more of a generic database, and it could also show of any spare vehicles and / or available storage spaces.

So for instance, mine would read:

The Doctor / skills = none / cars = depends on the day of the week / travels = Essex area, sometimes Kent / available space = 1 (if roadworthy)

It would be a reasonably live thing, perhaps on Google sheets with a password, and it would evolve over time..

Just my thoughts.

I like that idea! I'd be up for it.

On the subject of shite hire, my dad used to rent some really weird old shit when he lived in Ireland, a favourite of mine was the Toyota Carina that the boot used to open on if you went over a big bump or cornered really hard. Think it was to do with the weird "MOT" rules they used to have, where you pretty much never needed one from what I remember.
