Trigs new project - Granada Scorpio

trigger

Recommended Posts

My old man used to smoke around in a few Granadas.

Recall changing the interior out on my 'summer holidays' , as his was poverty spec' and we scored a full leather interior from the scrap yard for £100.

Shall be watching this thread with interest, and if you're flogging it, pop us a P.M, as being an Auto my old man might want to relive his youth*

Just catching up with the forum so only just spotted this.

These were properly LUXE back in the day. I can’t remember why my dad had one as a hire car but the interior was well up there with the big Mercs back then. Quite enjoyed floating round London in that thing. I haven’t seen one for years though, can’t be a lot of them left now.

I managed to get the wheels back on this afternoon and pulled it outside, the offside looks great! It still needs the wheels painting and lots of polishing etc.

I then turned it around, got the nearside jacked up and hit it with the wire wheel.

Oh bollocks. Needs a patch on the inner arch and the outer is worse than the other side so not sure what the next course of action is at the moment.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been pretty quiet on here of late but I've still be chipping away on the granny, last week a mate came round and welded up the inner arch and part of the arch which meant I could crack back on again, unfortunately I didn't get many photos though!

I got some before photos of the holes, imagine them with a plate over them now, oh and a new rear shock absorber as they were shagged out! (£35 for a pair of gas Delphi ones of eBay which i thought was cheap enough)

Now I'm not going to admit it's perfect but it's still a damn sight better than it was, I rubbed though in a few spots back to bare metal so had to recover again with some etch primer hence the grey bits.

Then today I got the white bits painted, tomorrows plan is to finish the sill, I've primed and stone chipped it all, it's just ready now for the top coat of grey now and then I need to waxoyl and underseal it all and mop and polish the car, after that paint the wheels (I've got the new Toyo tyres now) sort the brakes and a few other mechanical bits out and then hopefully it's ready for  the mot!

Loving this. The totally irony of the Mk3 Granada being probably one of the best Fords built in the past 40yrs and yet being worth pennies puzzles me.  One of my father's pals was in to his Granadas big style back in the day and had a Pre launch invite to our local dealer as he was running a fully loaded late Ghia x Mk2.  Knowing that I loved my cars he took myself and my dad along with him. I've still got all the glossy premium printed pre launch pack literature.

He ordered a brand new Scorpio on the spot. Had it the first day they came out - one of the very first on a B plate. He loved it so much he kept it for over decade - to be replaced it with a facelift frog faced Scorpio in the late 90s.

Yout doing a cracking job on this - looking forward to seeing it fully mopped! ? ?

I spent some time this afternoon doing a bit more on this, got the grey paint on now, I'm not super happy as I slightly cocked up the height of the grey on the rear arch dog leg, it should have been more inline with the plastic side panel but it's hardly the end of the world, the grey isn't excatly the right colour either but I think I'm being a bit over fussy.

I need to work out how to get that yellow paint of the plastic trim, hopefully a magic eraser will help?.

I also ran the mop over the side with some 3m Fast Cut Plus which has really brought the shine back too, so still lots to do but it's certainly looking better for it.

White really suits these I think - likewise the Sierra - but in that case only if it's a post facelift car with the smoked rear lights.

Don't think I've ever actually driven a Granny of this generation...the earlier one yes because a mate had one, and quite a few of the godawful ugly later ones as we had a fair few of those through the garage.  I remember them actually being quite nice driving cars...just could never bring myself to buy one with those looks!

This generation though, proper dignified looking luxobarge which looks like it should be rubbing shoulders with Renault 25s, 7-Series Beemers, Citroen CXs and Xms, Vauxhall Senators, E-Class Mercs and surprising the odd Jaguar driver on the M6...

That's really nicely specced it looks and will look gorgeous once it's finished...

That looks ace.

I remember that the company organised a hire car once for three of us to go to a meeting near Chester. I got to drive the white Granada back.

As it was winter, so therefore dark and cold, I didn't bother taking my high vis coat off when we got back to it at the other end of the car park.

Fuck me did it slow down the traffic on the M62 on our way back to Lincolnshire!!

A little more work done, at long last the alloys are now painted, I'm not super happy with them but considering how corroded they were and I'm only doing it with rattle cans they will do, ideally I should have removed the tyres first but I don't live near the garage I use anymore and didn't have time to go there, I have got a new set of tyres for them to fit.

I also filled the washer bottle yesterday only for all the contents to flood my garage floor, after a right faff I got the bumper off to access the bottle.

From what I can make the headlight washer pump was as rotten as a pear and it's either swollen and split the bottle or the bottle was split before and been leaking on the pump, either way I've ordered a new genuine Ford one of eBay for £14.50 and ended up using some KB weld to plug the hole up, Hopefully that will work.

Other jobs have been to finishing the mopping and make a start with the hand polish, I've reglued the rear headlining back too with moderate success, if it's stays up it will be a bonus (don't look too closely mind).

And I've fitted a dealer sticker for my local Ford dealers from DMB who sold the car to the last owner back in 1992.
