Sao Penza

Hull/H*mberside dealer chat - the Lada dealer was Arncliffes and the Skoda dealer was Maudsley Maudsons. I definitely remember an advert in, probably the Hull Daily Wail, for a Sao dealer; I think that the dealer dealt with another lesser known brand which was advertised alongside the Sao, it may have been Kia or Hyundai. What is ringing a bell is that Sao and brand x where both obviously Japanese in origin but from different parts of the world. The dealer may have been out in the sticks (there was a Hyundai dealer in Beeford but I don't think it was them).

corrected Maudsley to Maudsons

I’m a bit gutted as you’ve now broken Autoshite as it is impossible for anyone to top a Sao Penza for maximum shite points and rarity.

Even Invacars are common as muck in comparison.

That really is a great save you just have to find a low mileage mint saloon (preferably in green so you can match the brochure) now for the full set  then borrow the doctors 323 and you could remake the original  brochure.

Thanks, I didn't know there was a Hyundai dealer in Beeford, whereabouts in Beeford was it?

It was here... just south of Beeford. Notice the Chequered Flag sign? I'm 99% certain that that was the name of the Hyundai dealers (this was at the time when the only Hyundais available were Ponies and Stellars).

Also note I've corrected the North Ferriby Skoda dealer to Maudsons, not Maudsley.  And, even more off topic, do you remember the Dacia dealer in Little Weighton?

Thanks, I had wondered if that was it. No I wasn't aware there had been a Dacia dealer in Little Weighton, I guess that would be what's now Station Garage?

Yup, Station Garage it was, they specialised in the 4x4 models (the original Dusters) and I'm fairly certain that I saw a genuine ARO there as well. I do remember them making it into the Hull Daily Wail when they held a fund raising event for some sort of natural disaster that happened in Romania - it could have been the Vrancea earthquake of 1990.

Thanks. Any idea who the FSO dealer for Humberside was? A friend of my mums ran a Polonez during the mid 90s.

I used to own a pop-up light Mazda 323 with the registration K***SKL.

Wonder if they were sold a the same place?

Mazda UK fleet cars always used to be registered in Kent, so suspect that both your 323F and Nigel's Penza were first registered by the importer (see also most of the press photos in the thread). Could have been demos, staff cars, fleet sales to daily rental or other customers or pre-regs? I've played about with a few plates in the K716-814SKL range and all match Mazdas and Kias (also same importer at this time) fitting that theory.

Here's a press photo of a KxxxSKL Kia Pride:

On the North Bank it was this garage at Hutton Cranswick (now a Hyundai dealer), I think it's been rebuilt a couple of times since being the FSO shop and I can't remember the dealers name...

Today I managed to remember to look in my collection of brochures upstairs.  Sometime in the 1990s I visited a Sao dealer in Peterborough,  mainly out of curiosity.  I recall the whole experience as underwhelming but picked up a brochure as I left.  By some fluke I actually put it in my bag of brochures which, during my search for Sao, uncovered such delights as Saturn, Geo, Avanti, Tatra UK, and the electric General Motors EV1 amongst the more regular offerings from most of the large US, Japanese and Korean manufacturers all mostly from the  1990s.

I have scanned  the Sao brochure which is in good condition.  Nigel, assuming that you have not got one already, if you would like to have it, please pm me your address and I'll post it to you FOC.

Thank you for the comments.  My motive is not sainthood.  It gives me pleasure to provide an enthusiast with something of relevant interest.  I realised shortly after leaving the Pao showroom that I was unlikely to be avidly reading the brochure every night  decade and therefore considered Nigel's Penza purchase a worthy cause.  He should have the brochure during the week.  Recorded delivery may alert all Penza owners and some may try to hijack the post van so no, it will go by standard (do not bend) post, looking as anonymous and valueless as possible ?
