Do you know what's more annoying? Having your camera right with you but not being able to engage it quickly enough so the moment ends up gone & the vehicle is now out of sight! That really winds me up - I need something that can take an instant picture with a fast shutter & camera phones aren't it! :x

Happens to me every day ! Todays spot was a Toyota Carina about '93. never seen one before cause they are all badged Corona here. Just checked on my old one. It had 406000 km at its last inspection in July. Not Bad for 1800cc. I put a s/h transmission in at about 290000!

Regie i see what you mean, plus it seems that the higher the quality of the camera phone, the longer it takes to snap it.I find that the only things you can picture have to beStationary, and about 2 metres away, otherwise it doesnt look too good.......I could have got half of the ones I havent been able to snap with a good camera!

I share the pain. My camera phone is hopeless - everything I snap comes out tiny so is useless. And I do seem to keep seeing decent stuff when I am sans camera or not in a position to snap it - example being the tidy 'H' plate Seat Malaga in Crosshills (between Colne and Keighley) last week.

I miss some corkers due to the fact that I am on the scooter and I need one hand for the throttle and the other to stop the mirror falling off. Missed a Chinese built Charmant the other day (to be fair only the back is a Charmant, the front half is a Violet). Also, the Chinashite holy grail sputtered past me a few days ago (Dadi hatchback from the mid-80's). Thinking of mounting a camera on my crashlid.

Got to see that 'Charlet' Tom!

I'll try my level best. It was on a "local" plate limiting its likely location to an area the size of Wales. It was heading towards a road I know well that leads out of the city in to the mountains to the north. If the monsoons hold off, I may venture out there tomorrow. Trust me, you really want to see the Dadi hatchback. The Tagora of the orient in terms of rarity.Did see a Hyundai Grandeur yesterday - add that to the list

A Charmant fact unbeknown to Hirst. Hard to believe! I was hoping you would chip in on the history of it. All I know is:

Daihatsu licenced the Charade to China (I think via Taiwan, although this may have been an entirely different project), and the various developments are now well known (XiaLi and JiLi - some sprouted little boots and some even got stretched to form a mini NVIP limo). Daihatsu would have (as all other visiting hopefuls at the time) sent a few of their other models into China to see whether there was a future for them too. Some Charmants came - I even saw an original in BeiJing once. XiaLi and JiLi were the two successful ventures, but there were several failed starts and rip-offs too (other marque examples being the ChengDu Ital, the XiangYang Cherokee and the Great Wall Crown, the WuLing Visa, the Kunming Ammunitions Company Justy etc).

At roughtly the same time, someone drove a Datsun 160J from Vietnam to a small rural county in neighbouring Yunnan province where an entrepreneurial tractor company made a pick-up out of it. The dealer was still there the last time I drove through YunXian town and his yard was still selling 4 door Violet pick-ups. These are NOT officially cars as there is a long set of regulations that decide whether you can make cars or not. And it is usually "not". They run around on either fake plates, or the green "nongchang" plates that identify vehicles as agricultural vehicles only allowed to trundle around in China State Farms. But this is many many thousands of miles from Beijing and the guardians of peace law and order around there only really care about drugs smuggling in this little mysterious edge of the Golden Triangle (not the one in Norwich!!). If there was an I-Spy book for Chinese cars, these would net you the top prize.

The details now lost to an apathetic history (only great successes by the mighty are recorded for posterity), but someone somewhere (presumably around here) made a 4 door saloon with a Charmant rear end and a Violet (160J) front.

I really should have taken a photo. I hang my head in shame. Given the 8 year rule, this should legally be cubed now and it will be as soon as the traffic police have a cause to pull it over.

Instead have a photo of the Kunming Ammunitions Company Subaru copy.

and a XiangYang Cherokee next to an original

and an unknown copy of a LandCruiser with a 1.0 XiaLi engine. Yes.

and a Previa copy

Also, 1.0 engine in a big faux-SUV thing?!?!

Army used them for training purposes. To be fair, they all have different engines and were designed for 2.4l BJC lumps. But when they break, just put anything in. The Chinese are excellent at keeping things on the road - a little like Cuba. It's all new Mazda 2's and VW Magotan / Sagaruis now - boring new boxes.

I know about the business with the stretched Charades and I presumed some normal Charmants would turn up at some point, but a Violet/Charmant combo just sounds like something someone has knocked up in their shed. Doesn't make much sense with them being Toyota-based, I can imagine one having a front-end off a Corolla but not a Violet.

Talking of when great tat comes along when you've got no camera... Tonight I was waiting to turn left out of a side road in the GSA... let a few cars by, then there was a gap, then I saw the next car coming was... OMG, a minty R reg metallic blue Shovit saloon!! So of course I squealed a tyre pulling out in good time so that we could convoy down the road together  Lovely view in the rearview mirror! And later on while my girlfriend was driving us to the supermarche... I spotted a lovely bronze metallic twin-headlight Cortina MKIII in a posh house's driveway. Noyce.Mark.

Steering this thread back towards the orginal meaning, yesterday I missed (I´m in germany I hasten to add) a mint, truly mint wartburg estate chrome and all, lovely barkas, opel reckord saloon (the chromey boxy one), and a vast number of ancient mercs (123s, ponton, stacklight jobbies) an old commie truck and strangley a shed load of minis!I´m kicking myself its partly due to the fact my camera died mid way through my shite seeing but he ho!m0rris

Wonder if they'd splashed out the 12 large or whatever it was for the LoM car??
Probably not, I think that one resides up this way, it was at a show in Bridlington earlier in the year.

The Cortina's in a slightly difficult spot to stop and get a photo. I've been thinking maybe I should buy myself a hi-definition mini camcorder and strap it to to a hat on my head while driving, then review the video for any shite spots. That's probably the only way to do a shite sweep of my local area (and there's some good stuff around) without the possibility of being rebuked by angry owners miffed that I'm obviously snapping their chod for evil porpoises...Mark.

But then you´ll be like those american/japanese tourists that insist on videoing the sites instead of taking pics of them! !m0rris
