hennabm
In 1979 I had a few cars, my first been a Triumph Herald estate - GTK 547F. Then I had a Cortina II 1500 super - GTL 529E and a 1600E - TLO 540G. I had a brief fling with a Hillman Hunter 1725. I saw the year out with a Renault 12. lesapandre
Dan the van
My first year on four wheels that was.HPL 375K, a sky blue (and rust) Fiat 124 ST.
DoctorRetro
Somehow I doubt I'd be driving a 25 year old BMW in 1979. But here's my equivalents RayMK

MiniMort
Well seeing that a C1 is the cheapest car in the Citroen range and 40 years ago an 8 year old car would be from 1971 I guess it'd be a Citroen Dyane!

captain_70s
Erm. Bit of a struggle as a 35 year old Honda wouldn't be a thing in 1979. Nothing Triumph were doing at the time really matches up age wise so I reckon my daily would be an early 1940s Standard 12... The Dolly would be a Triumph Super 9... Man. My cars are old. In reality I'd probably have a shagged Morris Oxford or something.
Asimo
Those thirties and forties Triumphs / Standards would have been quite expensive in 1979, probably worth more back then than they are now in real terms so a fifteen year old Herald or twenty year old Standard would be more shitely. Conan
30 year old Toyota? Let's use a bit of artistic license since cars last longer these day. I probably would be driving this with 2T-G swap on Webers. Capri owners beware.? LightBulbFun and Roobarb

jonny69
Currently dailying a 15 year old Honda two-seater, so I'd like to think I'd be bumbing around a 1963 Honda S500 If you'd asked me three years ago, I had a 50 year old Ford and a 50 year old Citroen. So we'd be looking at a 1928 Ford and a whatever Shitroen was being driven by the French bourgeois. Ford Model A. Bellybutton Ford from back then: This 1928 Citroen looks suitably silly: bangernomics, vulgalour and puddlethumper
Hard on Equipment
Peugeot 104 would be the closest thing to my 206.
groovylee
mine would be a nissan patrol (currently terrano) and a passat B1 (currently passat B5.5) pretty dull really lol
HMC
Not to pointlessly get too technical on a pie in the sky thread, but...... The rate that cars age and are scrapped on average is different, as are the brands themselves and a whole load of other variables, but—- 1999 rover 820- in 1979 that would be from manufacturer that went belly up as an independant entity By the mid 60s and a mid sized/large saloon with a bit of an image problem from the late 50s hmmm some sort of borgward or maybe a Daimler conquest type thing? 2000 avensis British made minicabbers favourite, out of production a decade or so, bland but dependable hmmm 1959 BMC farina
MorrisItalSLX
Well, I’d have a 29 year old Toyota: And a 34 year old Jaguar: In reality, I would probably have a shonky Holden station wagon. vulgalour
trigger
Current family car (which i hate) is a 5 year old Ford Grand Cmax Titanium so in 1979 i guess a 1974 Transit Minibus would have been the closest thing back then. My daily driver/2nd car/work hack is a 11 year old Skoda Fabia diesel Sport so again in 1979 that would be a 1968 Skoda 1000 MB (no diesel options back then) My Ital van is 35 years old this year so in 1979 it would be something like a 1944 Morris Z Series Van and lastly the Marina Estate is 42 so some kind of 1937 Morris van with windows cut in the sides?. puddlethumper, Amishtat, Datsuncog and 1 other
Datsuncog
Mmm... what would a chunky 16-year-old Japanese AWD estate have looked like in 1979? Yeah... yeah, I'll take that. Reality probably would have meant I'd be piloting an early Maxi with serious grot round the doors and sills, though. More like that, yeah. rmt87
1967 Mini cooper (2007 mini cooper) 1978 vauxhall chevette (2018 vauxhall corsa) Not really sure for my rover 216 coupe. would have to be late 50s and broken. Nothing really that exciting!
jon.k
A smartish 25 yr old vw type 2, a hanging 25 yr old beetle like the one that drives off the scrap heap in Herbie, and some kind of mg (t type?) or frog eye. (t4, mk3 golf and a 91 mx5) great thread!

timolloyd
13 year old Bini today = 1967 Mini in 1979. Would be happy with that, but likely to be in terrible condition by then? 11 year old XC90 today = 1968 Volvo 164 estate in 1979? 21 year old Caterham today = 1958 Lotus 7 :). But more likely an even shonkier kit car of my own making.

Dave_Q
I'm driving a 9 year old French van, badged as a Fiat but it's definitely a Citroen really, so I guess the equivalent would be a 1970 HY van with some suitably dangerous benches bodged into the back for the children.
