Anyone been to Bridgers at Pease Pottage nr Crawley, West Sussex recently... I'm going up soon, does anyone have any requests for vehicles or parts to find?

I am fairly sure you will be wasting your time. Billy Bridges I think has closed, if not it very soon will,  and it is soon to be another major housing estate.

I borrowed these off Facebook. All I know is they were taken in the 80s

that Rover bottom right caught my eye because JBY-J is/was an age related plate series, and not a series issued in period

but I was thinking who in the 80's would rob a J suffix car of its reg plate? so out of sheer curiosity I looked it up and it originally had the plate TGV339J until Nov 83 then someone stuck the plate 113MM on it, then in March 1984 that was taken off and the car was issued JBY49J which then makes sense as back then for whatever reason the DVLC did not re-issue a cars original plate if you put on and took off a personal plate,

(I do wonder if you have such a vehicle today if you could now request the original plate be stuck back on it)

Last time I enquired they wouldn't give me the single digit plate my crayford originally had when new in 81.

was that taken off the car tho? if it was taken off and flogged to whoever as a personal plate, then not much you can do about it sadly

however wbat im wondering about is a bit different, in that if you had a car in the early/mid 80s and stuck a personal plate on it, then after a time removed the personal plate, they would just issue a random new plate appropriate for the age of the vehicle, rather than just put the cars original plate back on the car

despite the fact the original plate was never taken off  and stuck on anything else per-say, so I do wonder today if you could request for it to be stuck back on

(especially as today if you stick a personal plate on, the cars original plate goes on retention more or less and then just gets stuck back on when you remove the personal plate, which is much more sensible and does not needlessly waste age related plates)

I remember seeing some old pictures of cars uploaded to Flickr by someone who is also member here, who had checked out the registrations & found an one car had an "out of sequence" registration.

There were a few suggestions that it had been a second hand import etc, but it's possible it might have been given a personalised plate at one time, which had then been transferred to another car, & rather than get it's original registration back, it had been issued with an age related registration from a block that had not been issued.

Real shame that attracts the Banger racing type, I wonder if the Opel and the Vauxhall still survive. That Cavalier looks really clean, what's it doing there at the scrappie?

He had all sorts of stuff and was quite open to selling cars or parts. Think I said at the time they were prepping a Marina camper for racing and had been unable to find a buyer for the camper parts.

I'm no fan of banger racing classics but he wasn't the kind that seemed to take pleasure in destruction of a restorable car, the Opel GT was about to be sold when I visited.

The Marina coupe seemed far too good to race and apparently had been used as a kit car donor despite being an auto.

I dont see anything odd about that looks like a registration issued in period

in October 1974 everything "reset" to Gxx-N as the DVLC was formed and took over from council offices, which meant you did have some series repeat themselves unusually quickly :)

Yes after reading the comments I realised that the switchover from councils issuing registrations to the DVLC meant that some 3 letter combinations were reused faster than normal.

yeah, and its not the only shenanigans like that to watch out for, Essex for example jumped from BTW-L to NEV-M skipping all the letters in between for some reason

No for roughly the first 3 months it's was I think RNF 3 W ( I'll have to dig paperwork out)  DVLA say it was voided when it then had a private plate for a couple of years ( still used by family) it was then allocated it's current reg LKY 830 W .

DVLA say the reg is unable to be reissued ( I have proof from them that it is the original reg & can't see why it can't have it back & would be happy if they said it was on condition I can't sell it).

ah interesting :)my tool is only showing the the private registration and nothing before that

image.thumb.png.3ab017630358961abc0a0aaa37e70d05.png

however it is worth noting however that data from roughly before 1982 was archived off the main DVLA computer at some point in time (including whole vehicle records in cases where said vehicle had shown no activity for a long time ie no tax and keeper changes etc)

so I suspect thats whats happened to your cars original registration number, and is why the DVLA clerk at the time refused to give it back as it is probably in the dusty basement of the DVLA and has simply been marked as "issued" on the main DVLA computer system so it cant accidentally be re-issued and thats all the clerk looked at and refused to give the plate back rather then check the archived records

there are 3 ways you could go about sorting this one

1: try call the DVLA again and hope you get someone competent

2: theres the V765 route, generally meant for Pre DVLA stuff like a 1950's thing, but worth a shot here if you sufficient evidence

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-to-register-a-vehicle-under-its-original-registration-number

and third is a more "experimental, try at your own risk" one which is try sending a V62 off for your car but with the original registration number instead of its current one and seeing what happens, it may force them to dig through the archives, but im not sure what they will do once they realise RNF3W is LKY830W etc (if they realise that at all and dont just issue a fresh logbook for RNF3W so you end up with 2 V5's for the same car LOL)

October 1982, one of those Commer vans is on a P reg so 7 years old at the max.

The Fiat 125 there had gone out of production 10 years prior. Despite this one having long reached the end of its life, who knew that the basic shape (albeit with the 124 underpinnings) would be in production for another 30 years.
