30-odd years off road - Triumph Toledo, now in its new home

Yeah but would rather have a car that has that ticket, it bugs me when sellers highlight that as part of the main selling point in their ads.

MOT focuses too much on irrelevant things like structural corrosion and functional brakes rather than on things that matter like period correct change in the coin tray and a decently brush painted tidemark of doom.

Pah, werthers are a shite modern invention, bloody yank crap that didn’t exist before the millennium. What you need is Bassets wine gums as hard as bricks, or sherbet pips welded into one large lump.

Or a paper bag filled with a quarter of chewing nuts or toffee bon-bons.

So, we've been to see the car today, Ken stuck a new battery on and.....

OK1rdku.jpg Let there be light

t4jM3KA.jpg Let there be dashboard lights too

wdKVbMv.jpg new petrol tank in the surprisingly solid boot

Fo4Wff5.jpg Nice solid top mounts

qqWdkl5.jpg The only rusty hole that we found

GMvX3K9.jpg Check out that original colour underneath the dirt, it's Vermillion doncherknow. Castrol sticker says oil change due at 60000, car has only done 54000 so no need to change it just yet

yyGNF2z.jpg Both of the original fuses together with spares

btv3OkV.jpg Nice solid inner wings, not so robust hoses.

Ken will be along in a while to comment further, I'm sure.

Just got homje now after they decided to shut the M1 at J14/15. Joy. Not.

Well, another shitter met. Very Nice Chap indeed.

Despite it's slightly forlorn environment the little Toledo was impressively solid, a few rust scabs here and there up top but nothing major. As you can see from the piccies, the worst bit is the A pillar/scuttle area. There is a slight ding on the drivers side front wheel arch and some medium to heavy surface rust on the front valance. The rear wheel arches are intact but again, surface rusted. The N/S one will need an inch or two of nice straight repair section letting in but that is it. Underneath is solid as anything but there is a good bit of surface rust over most things underneath. It will need taking back to bare metal, rust killing and protecting.

Bonnet is spot on, wings are good, front end is solid as are the turrets. Boot floor is lovely and rust free as is the floor pan.  The boot lid is likely repairable.

Mechanically things are a bit more of an issue. The engine wasn't turning at all, so 20ml of diesel was lobbed down each bore except the very front one as we could not get to it. The carb will need to be cleaned and refurbed. All the hoses and hose clips will need to be replaced alongside the points, condenser, rotor arm, and so on. Plugs looked to be a good colour but old.

The subframe was covered in surface rust and looked to be in need of a small patch by the front O/S mount.  Gearbox is an unknown, but will need master and slave cylinder replacement to be on the safe side, likely clutch too. Radiator could be okay but will need flushing and a bit of a tart up.

Lights will need earths and connections checked, likely the same for the wiring for the headlights as they only worked on full beam. Indicators at the front lit up but no flashee, so again check and clean wiring and maybe a new flasher unit. Petrol tank had been replaced and will just need taking out and flushing. Likely a new fuel pump is a good idea.

Front wishbones will need cleaning and painting, new shocks and springs needed too. Bushes all round will be a good idea. Exhaust might be saveable. Interior.... the interior light works! It essentially needs a good scrub. New carpets if fussy :)  The seats were swapped over as the drivers seat was torn. New seat belts required. Headlining is totally intact but does suffer with the usual brown staining. I know a cure for that ;)  Wheels need a refurb, please do NOT put Sprint wheels on, that would be painful to me lol. Two of the tyres held air, the rear more so, but given how cracked and flat they were, it was impressive, we couldn't get to the N/S today.

Glass is good. Window rubbers are good. I have a spare window winder to donate to the cause. Door locks.... lock happily. Even the horn works!!

A cracking little car that apart from the A pillar and door is remarkably solid. Paintwork has it's rusty blemishes but is 85% viable. Don't think I have seen a Pimento 2 door Toledo before.

It is going to cost a pretty penny to restore but it's a one owner from new, family owned, Dad car. What price can you put on that?

You still haven't seen a Pimento 2 door. It's Vermillion. :-D

 About 3 grand apparently.

Thanks again for your help, Ken. Can't tell you how much we appreciate it.

Top work gents! Got to say, it looks good in the pics above.

If it’s structurally solid and it’s as sound as you say I think you’ve got the basis of a very good car. Metalwork is always going to be the most time consuming and expensive part. Sounds like you’ll be lucky for the most part in this respect.

What are you going to do then? Go for the resto!?
