Another for Mk2 Golf, I'd lusted after a big-bumper 16v for twenty years and finally bought a one-owner from new 60k miler last year, sure it wasn't mint and it had a few minor issues that you'd get with any old car but discounting all of that I felt underwelmed by the performance and the 16v mechanical fuel injection will lose out to an 8v digifant if I ever buy another.

I've had a few Golf GTis. Trick with 'em is to wait for something to go wrong with the engine then drop the 2.0 block from a Mk3 GTi in (the AGG block is the best for a Mk2) with the PB 8v head from a digipants Golf. Use an Audi 80 distributor and that makes 'em very nice indeed. Torque from 1000 rpm right the way to the redline, no longer have to drop from 5th to 3rd to overtake and 3rd is the perfect cross country gear. Better on fuel than the 1.8 as well.The 16v goes well but you have to row the bloody thing along with the gearlever.
