80’s and 90’s stuff that was unsalable

Will see if I can get it scanned and uploaded - I found the mag this evening! July 1995.

And it was indeed a Renault 16 on the front...

...with a Renault 14 and FSO Polonez lurking behind the flap.

Chevette of my memory was actually on the inside spread, as it turns out.

This was the start of the £500 car article...

...while this was the prize Marina: DUR 509K (well remembered!!)

Not sure if this is even readable, but I'll try to drag the scanner out later on and do a proper job of it.

Yes I remember rwd fords were low 3 figures for a rough example that could just about get through an MOT.

Things beyond comprehension to the masses at the time.

1) the internet and what it would become

2) the internet would provide a platform amongst many many things, for said old fords to be bid up to mental money as people fight over them.

Funnily enough I was just looking for that episode. It was a late model ‘Gold Medal’ one IIRC.

Let me know if you find it, mate. Channel 4 had one series available to watch on demand at one stage, but I have never seen them all, anywhere.

There’s a few I would love to see again. The Nova SR, Peugeot Speedfight, Interceptor/911 swap, the lizard in the Celica, Allegro Vanden Plas... So many!

I remember looking at some old heap with my dad at a used car dealer in Holbeck, Leeds (E34 525i IIRC) when an artic transporter turned up fully loaded. "What the fuck's that" shouts the owner, pointing at a pretty nice looking Lada Riva, to be told by the transpoter driver it was a freebie. He wasn't impressed and would've sent it back if it wasn't right on the back of the lorry. It was a similar age and in better condition than most of the stuff on the forecourt. Struggling to think of anything as comparably worthless now

Okay so - this was kinda experimental, to find out whether the Czur Aura scanner thing I got a few months back actually does what it says and flattens and straightens scanned images etc... (of course it fucking doesn't; this is why I shouldn't buy random stuff from Fundrazr).

But anyway - here's part of the Top Gear Banger Guide from 1995.

Hopefully these'll be clear enough to zoom in and read!

Oh, and a better scan of the prize Marina, too.

I'll bung some more up from this issue on the Shite Magazine Scans thread, too.

Watched the one tonight with the ropey Burgandy Citroen BX 14RE. An orphan if ever there was one.

Was that the one with ripped seats (and generally a total POS)  sold from a driveway and went for beer money?

I remember Anna the Banana’s BX. That was a good one. As was the weirdo who bought that student lasses 2CV.

Great programme!

If only we'd bought Apple shares. Doh.

I'm struggling with images of the 240K and Sunny estate, are the reg's on either of them visible on the original please?

Yeah - the scanner's not great, neither are the original pics, while the plates themselves aren't in the first flush of youth... these should be a bit better, though!

HMJ 500V seems to be the plate on the Skyline...

...and it apparently struggled on for a few more years.

While I think the B11 Sunny is WUF 350Y, but it's really quite hard to read, even on the original.

EDIT: Nope, looks like it's actually WUF 360Y - and it didn't survive much past this magazine article, t'would appear:

Hope that helps!

That’s interesting I remember when they were being launched there was a lot of concern about them losing value because they were a generation behind but that doesn’t seem to have happened.  Quite a few new brands have started by using parts from established manufacturers so I guess it’s not a problem as long as you know what you are doing.

Also many Dacia franchise holders are also Renault dealers so they didn’t have to start from scratch building up a dealer network.

Nothing wrong with a bit of knife and folk tech. Cars seem often over-complex these days so low tech still will find buyers?

Datsun 240K skyline were lovely cars - 2.4-6

I had a whole load of those 240K and 280ZX, 260C and 280C over about 10 years 1990-2002. They rusted like hell and were very thin metal. I am surprised that 240K has it's arches. The brightwork around the arches clogged with dirt and rusted them out very fast. The cills dissolved - water running into the body via the pillarless construction.

I once drove an example with no MoT Bristol to Leeds and back in the days before ANPR and cameras. Ah the folly of youth.

The best was a 260C estate - built about 1975 - the quality of the earler cars was slightly better. That car drove beautifully. Second best was a ZX with a Janspeed turbo. I raced a pre-production Jaguar XJ6 prototype up the A303 in that one night at well over 100 mile after mile. Mad but again pre-cameras.

There are a few early Jap cars in France, sports go for quite a lot but saloons are bypassed by French car enthusiasts so are still a few hunded €. So hoping to find another C sometime. One of the handfull of cars I regret selling.

All these would be long scrapped. Apart from dissolving I never had any FTPs.

Prices then £50-300. I never had any 'competition' as a buyer...never came across an ad where a car had sold. I was probably the only interested person in most sales. Odd really - they really were totally unloved. Possibly the fuel consumption...low 20's mpg.

The 240Z and 260Z were by then a bit more collectible so were no longer banger money. I never had one.

Nice one @Datsuncog. I had that issue of Top Gear and really enjoyed that issue for it's shite heavy content. I remember the article with the v reg Citroen CX. The original owner really looked after that car.

Completely forgot about the Morris Marina getting given away. Sold that issue on eBay for a few quid in the mid to late 2000s.

I vaguely remember an article from a lesser known 1990s car publication where someone bought a well used Sierra for around £80 and drove it from London to Newcastle: less than a train ticket for the same journey.
