I think it’s that we are now in the age of anything over 15 years old is now a ‘rare and appreciating classic’

As much as I’d like to see an old Ibiza preserved and enjoyed they simply don’t have a following to speak of, the people paying through the nose for it possibly aren’t enthusiasts but as pointed out before are hoping to get a small fortune on eBay for it.

And unless there is adequate spares back-up ownership of these ultra-rare cars could be a real headache. There was a Fiat Strada sold at auction recently...spares for some may be a real nightmare rendering the few cars left only fit for the showring or museum?

I can’t imagine a roadworthy one would be worth any more, assuming you could find one obviously.

I have 2 roadworthy ( not road legal) Mk1 Bitsa’s .

I think you’ll find their values are ( comparatively, from a v low start) rocketing.

At last.

Years ago you couldn’t give a Mk1 Ibiza away, along with stuff like Renault Fuegos and 25’s, they were practically impossible to sell unless they were literally at giveaway prices. How things change!

Back in the 90’s I had a forecourt full of XR3is, XR4is, RS turbos and 2.8 Capris, all sourced from the local banger auction or friendly local Ford main dealer and every one was under a grand, some significantly so...

And if they were all still sat there now you'd be utterly laughing, even if they had to be swept off the tarmac!

Some of the prices XR3is go for is comedy. Unless you were really wanting an XR3i and you knew what they were like you’d be disappointed. Driving one now it’d be slow as fuck, you couldn’t leave it anywhere for fear it disappeared, it’d just ruin it for me. When they were bangers and you’d paid a few hundred quid it’s faults were a lot more palatable.

Didn't a 1.6 Escort van get to 60 faster than an XR3 as it was lighter and had shorter gearing? Fair enough it didn't look as good.

I think it was to do with the gearbox yes, I had heard that the Escort Diesel gearboxes were a popular mod.

About 2004 a friend brought a X reg Escort XR3 just for the genuine Ford spares it had in the boot for his MK3 XR3i. Was quite a clean original car from what I remember that the elderly owner was only selling because they were emigrating. He paid £150 then sold it on a few months later for £250.

He paid even less for his XR3i. Originally looking for a MK1 Escort. A bloke at his work mentioned he knew someone who was scrapping a old Escort. So my friend went round to see it that night. It was the XR3i not the MK1 he wanted. So was going to leave it when the owner said if he gave him the £40 the scrapman offered it was his. He still has it now too.

Going back to the Seat hope it's gone to a good home. I almost had one for my first car. A E reg 900 3dr Designer in White for £95 back in about 1999. Sadly my Dad was too busy checking out the other chod the garage had in and a pair of lads beat me to it.

I think an Ibiza with the 903cc engine would have been a pretty miserable experience to be fair.

Maybe but I wouldn't have minded finding out!

I'd like a time machine please, to go and hoover up all those worthless Fuegos and 25s...

Fun but terrifying. Especially when it ran out of mph overtaking a coach with a truck coming towards me on the A143. Happy days.

I paid £600 for my Capri three and a half years ago. It needed work but was MoTed and I could have done a quick patch up and have had it on the road in a couple of weeks. The same car now would be £2000 plus. Crazy.

It’s amazing the cars we once scrapped that would be worth so much now...

I once scrapped a Mk1 Nova SR... that would be a gold mine now!!
