Service time!


I've been looking forward to getting this engine serviced. It's all new to me but they all do the same basic stuff so it can't be that bad. First off, I didn't realise that half the engine needed to be removed to access the other bank of plugs on this V6. That was a bit of a surprise to be sure but it was a good excuse to get to know the engine better.






The amount of plastic, ally and Ford parts keeps growing! Eventually I got somewhere.




And pulled the plugs!




Apparently the brown stuff is this:




The plugs are reasonably worn and I've no idea when they were last changed. It looks as though 3 coils have been changed on the right bank. There is some bodgeroo with one of the intake bolts to the rear- it would be the rear! I was to find out what a fucker that was going to be later on.


Whilst the top was off, the oil was draining I gave a glance underside to find out where the oil filter was... no luck! I found it later towards the rear of the engine, easily accessible too!


I also took the opportunity  to address the thermostat housing which had been leaking all over the place for some time. Here it is getting a quick once over to clean it up and make it serviceable for the future...




The idea is to take off and fix or check out and lube things as I go along which will need doing in the future such as consumable items and then not have too much bother with stuck bolts and shit when the time comes.

The coolant that came out contained rust, now the block is ally as are the heads so somewhere something is rotting up good. I suspect without any research that the water pump impeller could be a good candidate for this. The outside of the pump itself looks to be in a poor state so it will be worth changing. The tensioner pully is also loose in its bearings so will have to go soon. I'll gather those parts together as and when.




Now, this...




That's right, this...




For whatever reason this bolt was missing and had been replaced with some threaded bar and some loose nuts. I could not for the life of me tighten the thing up. I guesstimate that the bar was not bolting into the thread far enough. Cut a long story short and nearly an hour later with top engineering skilz I had it tight! Why is it always the hardest to get at ones?




All fixed... nearly bar some plastic covers and things. Fuel, pollen and air filters were bunged in also as well as a replacement O ring on the dipstick handle as the old one was swollen.


It runs well enough, I even balanced a torx socket on it's end on the engine to prove how smooth it runs. Quite impressive really. Needs some plastic clips, there are a lot broken or missing so something to look out for and the battery needs to be put in properly as it's a bit loose in the back there. More familiar with the engine bay now and know what to expect when spannering in there!


Not a straight forward service 7/10


Next up will be the track rod ends replacement and alignment... I hope!

That in the picture is not the water pump, I can see how one might think that. No, the water pump is bolted to the block face. It looks corroded 2fuc so I'm really only bothered with snapping bolts. However, I'm very careful. It'll sit in there for a while yet, I've just replaced the coolant! Needs rads too, they are so bad...

Good news big cat lickers! 

The black mumba has raided my wallet today along with its mate the 635. The Jaag done quite well out of it though with some new parts as follows:


  • Water pump
  • Idler pulley
  • Alternator belt
  • Rear track arms
  • Rear ARB links
  • Rear ARB urethane bushes
  • Front ARB urethane bushes


I think that's it. Apparently the rear ARB is a sod to do as it's up on top of the subframe and there's no room to do nufink. May have to drop the frame a bit so it'll need marking up before hand as there is 9mm of play once loose! It looks as though I won't be changing out all the bushes at the moment. I've read about hydrobush content in places and reports of urethane bushes making the ride worse if these get changed. Moar research is required here. For now, a little survey is required to see if, like most, the fluid has ruptured through any degraded rubber sealing. Don't know when I'm going to do all this work yet. Plus I got the last urethane bushes for the 635 that go on the rear trailing arms, that will make it 100% pollied up once done. Not looking forward to that little sweetheart of a job I can tell you. And I'm doing this for pleasure?


With the service and brake pads I have now just exceeded the price of what I paid for the car itself. So now the car is worth.... What I paid for it!


Makes perfect sense. That is also why I'm not an accountant.

Thanks for that. It cuts out a lot of headache. If anyone else finds bits of the car in their drawers...oo er... Please forward to me! I'd like to know what went above the number plate, there's two screw holes and a gasket but no 'thing'? Hopefully it wasn't a rear facing leaper!

I have now placed the car under a cover to prevent more bird shittings from targeting the paint. It looks very posh under its new cover.

Parts for the engine and suspension are arriving thick and fast. Water pump was not as expected. Advertised as a valeo OEM part with a 5 year warranty... I received a fast lane aftermarket pump with a 2 year warranty! Now, I've used fast lane for bearings, hubs and such and don't doubt their integrity but that's not the point so I'm in discussions with the eBay supplier. If he can't warranty the fast lane for 5 years then he'll have to send me an additional one and a half pumps to cover the advertised period.

Whipped the cover off today and drove it 150 miles. Also brimmed the tank... £77! Strangely only managed to scrape 31mpg, but who's counting? Although, it got in the high 30's with soggy tires before.. must have had the wind behind me! Alignment is still shot besides. 

Oh, that missing boot thing I've found out is a release switch. Inexpensive, widely used thing. Coolant loss is virtually gone now after messing about with the thermostat housing. Quality ride compared to that brick on rollerskates merc I've become used to.

A handful of admirers at my destination showing an encouraging tepid fondness exists for the s type... which was nice.


Back under its cover now until further notice.

Did I mention the stereo? One sunny day I was chopping around on the M25, toons blaring at volume 11 when I got a whiff of electricals... I blamed the tanker truck in front until I realised it was just carrying dirty water... I stuck my finger in the tape loading slot and it was like a volcano in there. ~turns stereo off~

And it didn't stop being boiling hot for sometime after. I can't have those types of thing in the car so it's coming out and is destined for the bin. It's replacement is planned to be an alpine satnavvy bluetooth thing.


I'm a bit bothered about the fitting in the hole part but it is effectively a standard old ford unit it's replacing so we should be winning...we should be!

Only just having secured* a personal plate for the 635, today I realised that all jaguars need private plates to complete the council estate toff look. So instead of sleeping, I got another plate quite suited to this particular motor car. All will be revealed after the transfer process has completed.

This is a smoll conversation I had with a incar specialist across eBay messaging once regarding the purchase of the above Alpine unit, second hand at £a lot£. The conversation came AFTER purchase... Naturally.

Now, I've heard and seen some ropey installs into the stype of these units and thought that it can't be that difficult can it? Why, it's just a Ford radio in there after all. Little did I know that I was about to embark on a butt clenching couple of hours, you see, jaguar in their first class wisdom decided that encasing the unit in scaffolding and screws would be a good idea... Let's see shall we?

1st issue was that I've took the battery off to put it on charge and fill my shed up with hydrogen gas. You can't get the car out of park with no battery. You need to do this to pull the whole center of the dash out in one lump. However, sat in the 635 degree interior I figured that removing the gear knob would allow just under enough room to force out the bugger, I needed another 5mm but it came out eventually.


Next was to remove and break down the contols and then measure positions for the mountings to be swapped to the replacement unit.




Drilling into an expensive piece of kit is not my favourite thing to do. I didn't want the new unit to sit flush as the surround was bigger than the existing plus I wanted to angle it towards the driving position a bit to reduce any glare so with careful manipulation of some dimensions the theory was put into practice.

This also meant that I'd have to modify* the drawer surround next to it a little bit. The plan was to keep the original overall dimensions to guarantee* a good fit without hacking into the dash on the car. The coin tray had to go, luckily the facia comes off and just fits under the unit to cover a nasty gap left behind from the coin tray. Reassembly involved me cutting into the cage to fit the top bracing. Tightening all the screws up in thier original locations shown by previous marks on the mating surface, showed me that dimensionally it was spot on.

Without too much damage too. It's a shame that the link leads are incorrect for the Jag or I'd be out there seeing if the bloody thing even works!

So, to summarise... If you want a nice stereo in yer stype, be ready for crazy funtime!

Battery update: it's still on charge. Up to 12.9 volts but doesn't seem to go any higher. Tests are ongoing.

In other news:

Head unit leads... 1 was missing from the sale, the expensive one with all the RCA plugs on, that's even if it came with that in the first place but why shouldn't it?

Conversion loom and patch lead for linking the head unit to the jags loom and utilising the steering wheel controls.

Box of pin connectors for if any of the above doesn't work.

Welp, that went well*. 

I have successfully bought the jags multimedia into the present time but it wasn't without a fight. All the leads I bought fit and (eventually) worked including the steering wheel controls! That was short of a miracle.

Firstly, I had to connect the battery which has been behaving itself after a good charge for the week, holding just over 13volts. In doing this set the alarm off. The key fob (with new battery) won't do anything. After starting the car the alarm stayed off. 

The console was an absolute pig to fit back due to the added amount of plugs behind it causing me to dismantle further parts of the dash to pull things out of the way but we got there! Many swear words were said.

Bluetooth connection with phone and at long last... my internet radio.

Future ready for install of a sub, video and cameras.


Radio and CD

I managed to pop the mic right near the top face of the dash and it works fine on calls. The only thing that doesn't work is the mute on the steering wheel, I don't know why but, the control on the head unit is less than a foot away from my hand so it's no big deal. The Bluetooth connection goes quiet too when i use the camera on the phone... That's just weird.

Setting it up was easy too. Being alpine and serious kit it asked if I had leather seats when I was setting the sound up. Very important.

A bit of a tidy up of some trim left to do to get it perfect and mount the satnav aerial. 

Blood lost- 0

Skin chafed- 5

Swear words used- 43

Catastrophic failures- 0

Sense of achievement- 95.2%

Oh, and I set a code into the unit so if someone takes it, it's flipping useless!

      Usually my comute to work is boring and miserable, especially in winter. All of 4 miles doesnt even get the old girl warm. But yesterdays antics saw an audi Q7 side swipe me when he realised he was in the wrong lane and was too lazy to go back round the roundabout.
      Now, I know this community is vast, and wide..... Ive found a drivers door in silver, but he doesnt have the rear. Has anyone seen or heard of anyone breaking/or a carlton in a scrappy thats silver? if need be, I'll get the door painted if its the wrong colour. Insurance have been informed due to the ill temper he had when we stopped... and the fact that he thought i was in the wrong when actually, I was right. (dash cams, i recommend them)
      And yes, my old chod has been injured...... but she will live on!

      This week, for the first time ever, I felt old. I have sciatica which swaps from one side to the other, arthritis in one hand and what I think is the beginnings of IBS. On top of that it took me 2 weeks to remember a registration number that once would take me 2 seconds, and I forgot my parent's wedding anniversary.

      I'm only 32.

      Shit. No I'm not. I'm 33. I forgot that too. (Genuinely)

      So, it's about time I committed some of my tales to paper. Well, a shonky server... but that's the best you can do in 2016.

      First up, a list of the cars I've owned (as best as I can remember) in chronological order.

      Main Cars
      1985 VW Polo Formel E. C158 TRT. This was given to me even before I passed my test.

      1991 Rover Metro S. J801 TAC. Bought about 3 months after I passed my test as I was convinced the Polo was about to shit its gearbox.

      1987 Volvo 360 GLT. D899 CBJ ___ Managed three months in a Metro before the small car and smaller petrol tank became a bore.

      1999 Ford Mondeo Zetec. V384 DBJ. Still the most I've ever spent on a car. It was 3 years old and cost, from memory, about £8,000. Just think of the Rover R8s you could buy with that now!

      1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI D79 CVV. I very nearly bought a MK1 Golf 1.1 but was persuaded, by my father amusingly, to buy this one from a different friend. From memory I gave about £500 for it, and sold it to some racers later that year for about £300. Amusingly, 16 year later I'd sell the Hartge wheels that came with the car for £530.

      1999 Toyota Avensis CDX. V781 GDP. By far the best car I've ever had. Bought in 2002 for £5300, it had previously been a company car at British Telecom. I ran it from 62,000 to 174,000 before it became surplus to requirements. A German chap bought it on ebay for about £500 and drove over to collect it. Hero.

      2001 Ford Mondeo Zetec. Y821 EEB. I should have loved this car. I gave £500 for it in 2008 which was stupidly cheap by anybody's standards. It needed 4 tyres (which actually was nice to pick good ones for once) and a coil spring. Sadly, it was just bill after bill after bill. I sold it and promised to never own another Ford. I nearly succeeded.

      1998 Nissan Almera GX Auto. S58 NLO. My late Grandfather's car and, upon reflection, my first proper attempt at bangernomics. I bought it for £500 in 2008 from the estate and ran it for well over a year and 30,000 miles. It was also my first automatic which, whilst a bit dumb, did lock up into overdrive and give a good 36 mpg no matter how it was driven.

      2003 Rover 75 Club SE. AX53 BFA. This is where my career as a serial car buyer really began. Ignoring all of the warning signs I decided to press a K Series into a daily 100 mile commute, which it did with aplomb. This wasn't actually the car I set out to buy, the one I'd agreed to buy OVERHEATED ON THE FORECOURT whilst I was doing the paperwork. Consequently I couldn't leave fast enough and bought a different car later that day.

      2004 Toyota Avensis T3-X. KT53 DWZ. Sensible head back on, I decided to get back into something I trusted when my 3rd son was born. This was a lovely car, but not without its problems. The VVTi oil burning issues are well documented and do frequently occur. Ironically, this was less reliable than the Rover it replaced! Despite fearing the worst and 3 months off the road, the new owner has just MOTd it.

      1999 Toyota Avensis SR. V263 GDP. Back into bangernomics territory again. The last MK1 Avensis I had was the best car I'd ever had, so I hoped to replicate it with another T22 Avensis. This one came up for sale in my favourite (and rare) colour with a numberplate sequential to my previous car - so it was meant to be. I still have this now, and tomorrow it will tick around to 185,000 miles having been bought by me at 100,500.

      1974 Morris Mini 1000. GEL 517N. Well, I always wanted one - and was young, free, single and well off at the time (2003). A memorable trip to buy it when I called my new girlfriend by my ex girlfriend's name 20 miles into a 200 mile weekend away. She's never forgiven or forgotten but we're still friends. Oh - and married.

      1977 Ford Capri II 1600 GL. SMY 675R. I can't remember why I bought this, other than I thought it'd be amusing. It was bought from Norwich for £350 and was perfectly well behaved for the 8 months that I had it (other than a flasher unit expiring). I remember being shocked just how much the windscreen would ice up inside, and duly sold it in November to a guy who was going to drive it daily! It's still alive and now, apparently, black! (Update - it's now silver!!!)

      1989 Volvo 340 DL. G67 AVN. I bought this for £80. Unbelievable. It was utterly bloody perfect. I wanted to do a banger rally which is why the guy gave it to me so cheap. I'm still yet to do that rally, but no longer have the car. I sold it for about £300 to a family who were clearly down on their luck who, I hope, still have the car.

      1996 Toyota Granvia. N775 JEV. My wife and I decided to increase our numbers further and, with our 4th son on the way, larger transport was required. We quickly realised you can either have 4 children and no apparel, or apparel and no children. After trying a very tired Mercedes Viano, the Granvia was found for 1/4 of the price and it's still here 2 years later. I can safely say that we'll never sell it - it really is another member of the family.

      1993 Mercedes 190e. L795 COJ. I've admired these cars since I was a child. In fact, one of the very few toy cars I still have from my childhood is a Mercedes 190e. Regular readers of "Memoirs from the Hard Shoulder" will know what a PITA this car has been since day 1, but I get the feeling it's a keeper. We'll see!

      1983 Ford Sierra Base. GVG 510Y. Not explicitly my car, but it should be documented here for reference. Oh - and the V5 is in my name. The story is online for all to read as to how five of us acquired what is believed to be the only remaining Ford Sierra Base. Make a brew and read it, it's a fantastic story.

      1982 Ford Sierra L. LCR 503Y. I accidentally won this on ebay for £520. Upon reflection, I shouldn't have sold it - but short stop of saying I regret it. I could never get truly comfortable driving it and, in fairness, I could scratch my Sierra itch with the base if I wanted. Sold it at a stupid profit of £1250. It is believed to be the oldest remaining Ford Sierra in the UK.

      1979 Volvo 343 DL. DBY 466T As you'll see above, I'd had a 360GLT as a younger lad and fancied one of these earlier cars. The variomatic is, frankly, terrible but amusing. This car has just 8000 miles on the clock and inside was absolutely timewarp. Sadly, the huge bill for the Mercedes 190e cylinder head rebuild meant I had to sell this car shortly after acquiring it. Since then I've had a bit of money luck, and now realise I didn't need to sell it after all. Typical.

      I think that's it. My arthritis is playing up even more now. I've left out a few cars that were actually my wife's, but if I find pictures will add them in at a later date. I'll run this as an ongoing thread on cars and what's happening.

      Current SitRep:

      Purple Avensis: Just about to click over 185,000. Minor drama this week when an HT lead split but otherwise utterly fantastic, fantastically boring and boringly reliable.

      Granvia: Just done 1000 miles in a month around Norfolk, 6 up with suitcases. 31mpg achieved on the way up which is good for an old tub with a 3.0 Turbo Diesel on board. ODO displaying 175,000 which is a mix of miles and kilometers. Say 130,000 miles for argument's sake.

      Mercedes: Being a PITA. It's had the top end completely rebuilt after the chain came off. Now needs welding to pass another MOT and the gearbox bearings are on strike. It's about to go into the garage for winter until I can stomach it again. 151,000 miles on the clock.

      Sierra bASe: Still on sabbatical with AngryDicky who only took it bloody camping in cornwall! Legend.

      First some background:
      I was brought up with no car interest, a car was transport and nothing more which resulted in a selection of poor cheap cars being the cars of my youth.
      Fast forward many years (just over 9 years ago) and I have a wonderful* Vauxhall Vectra estate to carry us about. Unfortunately it is crap and throws fault codes at us with nothing being there when it is checked (even at Vauxhall)
      As Mrs T is the main pilot of this chariot with the two little miss T's on board, it has to go.
      The hunt is on for the new steed to safely and comfortably carry the family around. I have a company car at the time so big journeys are not an issue.
      ebay is my weapon of choice to find the new family car. It has to be good value cheap for no other reason than I am tight.
      Weeks of research with lots of cars that are too expensive and too far away for easy collection end up in my watch list.
      Finally a possible is spotted in Fife. I go and have a look and find a poor looking but solid car. One previous owner and lots of history.
      The auction was to end on the Saturday at midday, we were going to be out! I decided on how much I was willing to gamble on it and on the Saturday morning I put in my max bid but straight away it went to my max bid, I was winning but it had three hours to go with no room for me to go up! We went out anyway.
      I spent the next three hours kicking myself for not bidding more while we were out as it was the first car I had seen that fitted my criteria. Fate was in charge.

      On returning home I go straight on ebay to find 'Congratulations.............'
      For the grand total of £500 I had just won this fine vehicle!

      It has 5 months MOT and after fitting seat belts in the rear for the girls car seats it is pushed into daily service.
      My gamble and subsequent use results in a perfectly reliable car that actually does what it is supposed to do.
      Even more importantly Mrs T loves it so a win all round.
      All my cars have names (most are earned over a bit of time) and this one is called 'Gwendolen' ( G reg car and from Wales originally. I hate the name but I am not going to argue)
      That sums up part one, more will be along later (probably much later)
