Hello Autoshite

Last night some shit stain stole my friend's mk2 Golf from outside our rented house in the southwest area of coventry near warwick university. It's a long shot but if any midlands based shiters see it please get in touch.

Details copy and pasted from his facebook post:

***STOLEN*** PLEASE SHARE
1989 VW Golf mk2 Driver 1.6 5dr – G294 JWA
My car was broken into and stolen last night from outside my student accommodation near Charter Ave, Coventry, between around 6-10:30pm on 11/02/2019

Distinctive parts of the car include:
- Body is Marathon Blue, rare colour only available for 1989 year
- Pirelli P-slot alloys with VW centre caps
- Firestone tyres and white tyre writing
- “Gilders” dealer sticker and white “Chopped” MightyCarMods sticker in rear window
- Car is overall very clean and great original condition, less than 56k miles

If you see this car or any parts of it that come up for sale, get in touch with me through a DM or call me on 07593601312, I would be incredibly grateful. If people can otherwise remain vigilant we stand a chance of recovering it, this is my first car and is special to me, I am gutted to see it taken by some scum to sell or part out. Please share this post around, especially to VW enthusiasts or contacts in the West Midlands area.
Thanks for your attention,
Alex

Defo keeping an eye out, slightly concerned we just sold off my close buddies mk2 Driver after a shunt but that was a three-door... but otherwise identical.

Bad times. Hopefully it’ll be recovered quickly and without damage. Where the hell does all this stolen stuff end up?

My advice if you can take a spin around as much of the local area as you can - it may be abandoned somewhere. My Landcruiser was and I found it. Any idea if it was an uplift or a drive away - a break -in indicates the latter - was it full of fuel - how far could they have got? Its a long shot but worth a look and visiting local garages and backstreets. Do some photocopied handouts as well as the usual web stuff.

I also had my W124 Merc stolen a few years back - that probably went abroad - very rare black with a black leather interior. Being nicked shows the MK2 Golf is now also officially a desirable mota.

My Nissan Cherry turbo also went 20 years ago...but my Citroen collection parked on the street seems protected by its perceived weirdness

Bad luck.  Sorry to see.

Update: Found! someone in a local group said they saw it on a police recovery truck this morning, even though we had received no notification from the police so we called 101 to get an update. It is currently in a recovery yard somewhere in Birmingham, we haven't seen it yet, calling them in the morning. The woman on the phone said the only reported damage is two smashed windows and 'ignition damage' so fingers crossed the rest of it is ok.

Might have got lucky as it was very low on fuel when it was taken but i guess it was joyriding, we feared it would be hidden in a garage to be broken for parts. I guess we will never know for sure.

Thanks to anyone who shared etc.

Happy days

Liked for its originality and the red Ovlov smelling it's bottom.

The ovlov is mine, purchased after i saw it in the ebay tat thread a couple of years ago, which i am now keeping a very close eye on, taken the battery out tonight and the lead from the coil to the distributor cap, don't want to risk it happening again.

In parts, on eBay, etc.

Also having an idiosyncratic attitude to starting can be a deterrent to anyone needing a quick getaway.

Glad it's found. Hope it's OK. Thank you though, for reminding me I had one in about 2002, exact same colour and year but a 3 door Driver. It was a terrible car but I sort of loved it. I think for the first time I wish I'd kept it.

Bought from an emmigrating neighbour when I needed a cheap car no mot, no service history, no test drive, £350 cash. Turns out I was a shitter years before I realised.

I'm pleased it's been found, and hope the damage is minimal.

My first car was a MK2 Jetta, which some arsehole broke into with a screwdriver through the door, then cut the ignition wires in an attempt to hotwire it. Thankfully they failed, but they made a mess of the ignition loom.

As an aside, after one of my other cars was broken into when I was a student living in a shady area of Preston I bought a disklok, as it's a bloody good physical deterrent from opportunist thieves. If you can afford one I'd recommend it, and you can transfer it between cars. Just make sure it'll fit over your steering wheel first.

Get it back quick!! There will be a £200 recovery charge then £100+ a day storage fee.

This shouldn't be passed on to the owner as the vehicle wasn't in their possession at the time but it routinely is. If the police want to do forensics on it then watch out for more storage charges racking up whilst you wait for them - these extra days/ weeks will be waived IF you kick off about them

Now prepare for the triple figure a day police storage fees...

Sad to say you may pay recovery fee and storage per day. Ok if you go the insurance company route. When my van was stolen by the timeI got the police letter notifying me it had been found it racked up big fees. At which point I had to scrap it as I wasn't going to make an insurance claim and storage was getting out of hand. Kind of defeated the idea of detection.

Yes - 'savings' in a lot of areas of public service mean that costs have been shifted to the user alas.

Get it straight back. I asked them when my escort got recovered. They might want to keep it for 'forensics' but then that's their issue. They kept mine for 2 days and done sod all to it. I found the crooks wallet in there when I was cleaning it up... Unlucky.

I can't imagine forcing a proper full steering wheel cover disclock off in anyway that would leave the car drivable and with a steering wheel.

I did inquire, owner said it was the large size lock he had recently bought as he had been unable to find a smaller size.

Although it doesn't show up too well in the the picture, there is enough space between the rim and the lock to crow bar it off.

He said when the car was recovered the Disklok was missing and the steering wheel was very distorted.
