Are MG Magnettes still a bit of a bargain? A ZB for £7k seems entirely reasonable in today's market. Lovely looking things, I almost see hints of Lancia in the styling. Personally more desirable to me than 60's super saloons like Jag Mk2 or P6. Do they have crash gearboxes?

Gerald Palmer  the designer was already known for some great designs when he penned this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Palmer_(car_designer)

Some do say there is a Lancia design influence.

Saw on of these at the top of the Col de Telegraphe last May.

The rider was clearly a man of taste and discernment because he hopped off, ignoring his travel companions, and went straight over to admire the Dyane and my mate's disreputable CX Safari.

I don't know what their rep is like, but that trader turns over stock at quite an impressive rate. Their motors are always photographed in that same spot.

As for Magnettes, weren't they more desirable in the 80s and values have since waned?

The demographic who can relate to '50s stuff is dying out.

totally agree, that's why I really applaud the heroes on here like Vulgalour, Angrydicky, Barrett etc who keep the flame alive for older stuff despite being younger or similar age to me.

but plate is now on a white bimmer

Is 'AS' not a plate rape 'age related' replacement anyway?

3 hours ago, Dick Longbridge said:

Yup. That must have been an early age related plate without a non-transferable marker on it.

What was the plate?

No idea.

If you sent the chassis number to BMH they could probably prove/disprove the RAF story though.

a little bit of number plate triangulation later...

(I mean did you really think some number plate obfuscation was going to stop me?  )

not showing but should be showing is AOA168A which was issued after MGB353 was taken off the vehicle, then KAS294 was issued in 2002 as a suitable age related mark to replace the non-age related A suffix mark

I did wonder if you'd be able to resist 😅

Inevitable that the Moggie lost its MGB plate really, although there's an element of irony that it's ended up on a hybrid Lexus...

I always assumed the AS registrations allocated by DVLA were much more recent.

Hah yeah :) did take a fair bit of DVLA bashing to figure out, so by the end of it I was driven through sheer determinism to fish it out!

in that knowing it wore KAS294, and knowing when that was applied to the BMW it is now on, gave me a date range for when the Moggie was relieved of its plate so it was a case of pulling up the normal DVLA checker and running through the age related plate series for that date range (because I am a sad bastard who keeps track of whatever the current age related series's are! for pre 1964 vehicles anyhow, and knew what the age related series would be for that given date range)

until I came across the moggie that matched the description, then ran it through the tool to see its finer details and low and behold! (it took a bit longer than anticipated as the plate was only put on its current vehicle in September 2020 and i worked back from that so had 6 months of registration marks to trawl through!)

indeed I did note the MGB plate and think shame its not on an MGB at least LOL

AAS-YAS was issued Jan 2001 to December 2003, that was frightfully 20 years ago now! but it should of been non-transferable even then,

I suspect the non-normal way in which it was issued meant it manage to slip through the cracks so to speak and not get marked non transferable, thus someone was able to have away with it!
